That's what we were told at the time, he had been asked to pick the transfer targets he wanted, these were as much his choice as any manager we've had before.

And they were all terrible picks.

Which is what though? They were all short sighted signings and most of them would have needed replacements in a couple of seasons. You don’t sign a £50m+ player who is a year or 2 younger as competition/backup for a £50m+ player. There was no long term plan.

I think he did though, wasn’t there a press conference shortly after the owners took over where he went on about how “we are Chelsea we need to compete for titles..”. 

I reckon it was a combo of wanting to focus on coaching, and a lack of interest in nurturing a long term project/rebuild. Personally feel he is lacking when it comes to talent identification compared to a Pep, Klopp or and Arteta. Irony is with Brazzo given the boot at Bayern he is back in the same spot he was last season where he is involved in the transfer process. 

Truly average footballer. If any of Chilwell, Maatsen or Hall are fit then Cucurella shouldn't be touching grass this season.

Age wise, I completely agree most of the signing made 0 sense but in term of player profile, all of them fit what TT want, heck even rom fit what TT want. 

Cucu + Koula = lcb who can make between the line pass (one of the reason why our offense was so bad under TT) (Colwill is also this kind of player not sure why he sent him on loan to brighton) 

Auba = we need a goalgetter to replace Lukaku. 

Fofana = Chalobah is not a starting level cb. 

Sterling = run behind threat who is also good on the ball (timo replacement).

Argo's going to have an aneurism when he reads this bit.

Really poor for the goal but watching it there's 3 players who makes mistakes in that sequence. Kepa should save the shot, Cucurellas mistake is obvious and Enzo shouldn't open up the midfield for Gordon.

It is true though. TT said he wanted a st who can play with back to goal. 

Lukaku back to goal play is better that Tammy or even Haaland.

All of TT signing kinda fit what he want.

IMO the two major mistakes were Cucurella's and initially Tuchel for actually identifying him as a player he needed!

Another Cucurella weakness that often goes under the radar, (probably because it's one of a long list of weaknesses), is his poor aerial ability. I know he isn't the tallest but his timing is often off and he jumps under the ball rather than attacking in to it.

He in no way fits into this team. He is 4th choice left back clearly, Surely Pochettino will see this and get rid....surely.

I think the biggest mistake is 60m. If he cost us just 20/30m, it will be easy to just let him go. 

His case is very similar to Kepa. 😭😭😭 It is extemely difficult to move expensive player who is not very good.

Watching it back it looks like Enzo stuck to him man, looks like it was Casadei that gave Gordon the easy run through the middle. James had pushed up to mark Casadei's man and at that point Casadei should have dropped central to block to run into space. Bit late to react but he's young, he'll know for next time.

Kepa and Cucu at fault after that like you say.

 

Cucurella? Has he ever thought about playing in Saudia Arabia, they would love him there. With all that hair and flamboyance.  would be very sorry to see him go. . . but well, what can you do?

I’ve been giving him the benefit of the doubt because it was his first season and I thought his poor performances were overstated but that was terrible. Surely will find his opportunities to redeem himself limited if he’s playing like that.

I was just about to post the same thing, he's one of the few that I'm giving the benefit of the doubt on. But he's putting in the worst performances in a team full if inexperienced kids. It's embarrassing really.

He'll be one of our most experienced PL players and he's looking like the biggest liability.

But how has he turned out so poor? He was voted player of the year at Brighton and I sort of remember him plàying against us , think he was involved in a late goal for them ?

I know we have a knack of turning players into dross , maybe he just had one good season in him ? But he doesn't look anything like the player I thought he would be from everything I heard about him and the brief highlights I saw.

And now we've got our wallets out for another one of their one season wonders maybe?

I hope not , because I reckon he's just right for us, and surely we can't buy 2 Brighton f**k ups in a row ?🤣🤣🤣

There are plenty of players who looked really good for 1 season, but were sh*t for most of their career.

Need to get him off the books, he was a mistake signing simple as that. We cut our losses with Koulibaly,  need to do the same here.

Victor Moses. Still, miles better than Cucurella.

Thought it was a crazy transfer at the time - especially since we were looking for a centre back - instead signed a 5ft 7in left back who'd had 1 good season.
