Palace v Chelsea (PL) Sat 1st Oct 2022 15:00 GMT

Featured Replies

Few positives today.

Firstly good to see us hitting the front players more quickly instead of looking like a tourist driving from London to Newcastle via Cardiff.

Mount was average instead of really poor which is an improvement in relation to this season.

Gallagher put aside his shaky start to the season to make a pitch to play more regularly

Aubameyang getting his first goal hopefully builds his confidence

James and Silva top class (although I'm one who thinks Silva should have been sent off)

Kepa played well until he had to kick the ball, at which point he played like Christy Brown.

On the flip side...

We are imbalanced playing with only one decent wide player. That has to be a focus in future two transfer windows.

Too many similar central midfielders who offer protection to the back line and not enough quality in the other half of the field. Jorginho, Kovacic and RLC just don't offer enough. If you are playing Chelsea you'd be glad to see them playing.  Potter needs a properly fit and more resilient Kante back and I can see Gallagher getting more playing time going forward.

Still a massive problem in terms of converting possession into chances. The two paras  above somewhat to blame for that but also Mount really needs to start to look more like the Mount of prior seasons.

I thought Kepa did well with kicks , including one to one of our players 2/3 down the field that almost resulted in a one-on-one with their keeper.  Now, the palace keeper had a few howlers kicking the ball; did you get confused as to which keeper was doing the kicking?

Oh come on Phillip  you don't seriously believe he meant that do you? That was just good fortune. He shanked a number today, as did Gaita that is true.

I get that there are a few keepers who are superb with the ball at their feet and that can be a real advantage. However Kepa and Mendy are to kicking a ball what MC Hammer is to rap music. Players should know their limitations and play in a way that understands that. Pair of them should just hoof it and not worry about having a role other than keeping the ball out of the net.

Some positives and negatives come out of this game for me.

Obviously biggest one is the win, and the cracking Gallagher goal, which even the commentators called happening when he came on to the reception he got.

James pocketed Zaha again so he had to switch sides, so Reece then pockets whoever it was that came to his side.

Auba delivered a clinical finish, been a while since we saw a stirker do that.

Pulisic made the most of the few minutes he got, and did not waste his run and dribble like he often does.

Silvas display was very good, however he made one key mistake and assumed the ref was going to give a foul in his favour, once the ref decided it was not a foul imo he should have been sent off.

Kepa was really good.

Far as the negatives go though.

Jorginho is finished at PL level imo, he is declining almost as fast as Dave is.

Kovacic is a terrible passer, and made many poor choices.

Fofana was so poor on their goal, though at least he started to improve in the second half.

Sterling was like a headless chicken, lots of running, no end product.

Kai and Mount coming back to form cause of internationals right? Nope, still poor, finishing was awful though, Mounts especially.

Did not deserve to win the game imo, but Gallaghers goal was a worthy game winner.

Poor MC Hammer.  ‘Too legit to quit’ is a great song, especially after a few beers. And those baggy pants!!

Blimey, finally got back home from the game, what a trek it’s been, about 3 hours to get out of London on the M1. But only for that finish of Gallagher it’s been worthwhile. What a cracking end to the game. I thought that our fans were top notch today and the Palace supporters missing.
A few positives for me, not individual performances but at the team level. We finally try to get long passes going and though we’ve had moments of sideways play, the team has had also moments of quick forward play. For me that’s got to be a positive. Another positive finally seeing our number 9 scoring, a with a good finish. We even sang how sh*t you must be that our number 9 scored.
On the negatives, we are easy to attack, I don’t know what’s happened to our defence but they are easily cut wide open.
Oh, I thought that Silva was fouled, but if the ref gave a card it should have been a red card.

Agreed. Is either a foul on Silva, or it is a red card to Silva. Yellow was nonsense.

I fancy Potter to go after David Raya from Brentford when he gets a chance and ships out one of our keepers. We'll need a keeper comfortable with the ball at his feet and can use it.

And it was never a foul on him. A free kick for that would have been as soft as Elton John's tadger whilst watching the Dallas Cowgirls. We got away with one today.

‘Tadger’?  I had to look that one up.  I suppose it sounds better than ‘jimmy Johnson’, shorter for sure.

It would have been a soft free kick for sure. Although probably would have been less controversial with the pundits than giving a yellow card.

Stupid thing to do by Thiago either way, and he was lucky to get away with it. Ayew still had a long way to go before he reached the penalty area and may have been caught by one of our other defenders. Why risk going down to 10 men over half the game? A player of Thiago's experience should know better.

It was the second reckless decision by Silva in two games, very unlike him. I mean these were both poor judgement calls. Wonder what is going on with him.

Age is finally catching up with him unfortunately .

Good win and important 3 points, performance wise was around the same as Tuchel's last couple of games. The individuals brilliance got the win, for once the better players in the team stepped up at the crucial moment. I'm not a fan of the back 4 with Silva in there, he's still a great defender but you don't want him to be 1 on 1 against good attackers. James and Chiwell naturally love to go forward, with a 4 in the back we are literally playing a 235 when in possession, no wonder every turn over we got over run. We were way too open, on another day we'd be 2 or 3 down before Auba's goal. Maybe Kante back will help, but I rather have KK there if we play back 4. Mount needs to have some bench time, take the pressure off him and let him rediscover his form. Right now it's just not working, in the front 3 or MF. We could use the Havertz looks worse argument, but at least he had some moments this campaign so far, can't say the same about Mount. Apart from Sterling, every attacker is droppable in my view.

Not for me. Could say age is catching up with him if he lost a physical one on one, a race or was beaten in the air.

The two mistakes he made were judgement calls, normally something he is immaculate with. Mentally he made the wrong calls, and that is not like him.

His performance was also decent otherwise. Like you say it was an odd loss of judgement. Perhaps he is a bit distracted by all the recent changes.

I am not sure if i am able to figure out our formation yet.. Seems to be 2 CBs 2 Fullbacks and very wide wingers almost in  a WB position.. RS has been good for us when closer to the goal.. He seemed to be playing really wide.. not sure that his best position.

But at times it looked like a 4-2-2-2 and then at other times some crack formation ..

On the Silva handball incident, I think the referee and VAR got that absolutely right in hindsight,

The Palace player is clearly heading away from goal towards the touchline, and is miles away from the box, so not denying a goal-scoring opportunity is in my view the correct interpretation, and especially so when Chilwell can probably get back to cover as well. sh*te play from Silva though to even give Ayew the chance to dispossess him.

I was wondering about that too, is he getting more isolated under Potter or has his form dropped?

Nevertheless a great assist for Auba.

Not a great performance, but an important result nevertheless which will give everyone confidence going forward.

Spectacular goal from Gallagher. Such a humble young man with the way he celebrated (or lack of). Very happy to also see Auba get on the scoresheet.

Thought the team looked more energetic than previous weeks so that's a positive in my book. Still a lot to work on as we look a mile off from the top sides at the moment.

How can you not like "Can't touch this"?

Missed the game but saw the goals. I am happy that we still have a few golazos in the team. Auba should be mentoring the guys on how to hit first time

Having rewatched the highlights, you’re spot on. There’s no foul on Silva, or very soft, but Ayew was facing towards the side line and we had players, especially Chilwell, that could get to him easily. So yes, no red card is right. At the stadium all of us thought that Silva was lucky not to to get the red card.
