Saka was the same until last game where he really shone. Every time Palmer has entered the pitch he's being direct rather than just recycling the ball to defense. Really makes you wonder whether Foden is simply a Pep player and not this generational talent we've all been lead to believe, can't remember him ever turning up for England. 2 goals in his last 36 appearances for country... Looking forward to watching his career trajectory when Pep goes. Hard to know. Pep choreographs and drills. Everyone knows where they should be at any given time. Toss a player into an entirely different playing environment and, you might think, talent will out. Except thus far in this Euros there's no evidence whatsoever of planning, coordination, tactics. It's every man for himself with the hope that talent will somehow out. It has, luckily, twice, and saved their bacon.
July 8, 20242 yr Whatever you think of Pep and Citeh, they've crafted a diamond for us . Just gotta hang on to him.

July 14, 20242 yr This lad is class. Such a cool taken goal. Hopefully Southgate packs his bags and England gets a manager that gets the best out of him.
July 15, 20242 yr I'm still (un)surprised that Arsenal and Ben White haven't been sanctioned by FIFA. FIFA has intervened in many cases elsewhere to ban players who refuse call-ups from their NT.
July 15, 20242 yr Cant wait to see Palmer back in our blue. Think this is the season he becomes an england regular ahead of Saka. Absolute baller to do what he did last night in a final. Captain of my fantasy team this season. Harland who?
July 15, 20242 yr There's room for Saka as well. I think it's Foden who has to be dropped. He's useless for England.

Foden is one who should have been dropped tbh. And Saka's level at club well will be very good for him to be dropped imo.

But, there's a difference in their games England can certainly utilise. My current bias and his form makes Palmer look fresher and hes one of those direct players that process the game a little faster imho.. Saka wanted to do a little too much and Palmer donest think it through. England should be producing performances like spain, that's my gripe with southgate, and his refusal to take/ pick other left backs.
July 15, 20242 yr Got done dirty by Southgate all tournament. ANy City fans on here will probably disagree but he's miles ahead of Foden despite being younger IMO.

Foden played a completely different role in the Euro's. He was shadowing Rodri in the final for example. Coming on from bench later on and playing the flank is different what Foden did. But I think he was misused as almost every England player.

I've been saying that for ages. His stats last season were better than fodens, even with everything else that changed* for palmer while foden just continued a new season at "work". *Sry for repeating....new club, team, city, etc....even just being a regular and so vital to the team adds pressure. I really like this kid, I just wish he's more vocal, he's got the right amount of confidence/arrogance, just think if he's more vocal then idiots like walker, stones and rice** would pass to him on the pitch for example. **I saw all 3 of those ppl blank him and make a different pass even though he was open and no one inbetween or close. Granted they mostly went for shorter passes instead compared to the one for palmer, but rice in particular, has he got an issue with palmer? He did it a few times and very obvious. All that palmer did was shrug his shoulders and raise his hands slightly. Blink and you'll miss him "moaning" they didn't pass to him, if you can call it a moan or objection. I didn't think he got the same credit as the others too for his penalty. Going first is a biggie too, but unfortunately going last because you were crap in midfield, "redemption for saka" and and being "bellend bellingham" gets more praise. I'll give them the no look toney one though, nutta! The guardian rated foden a 6 and Palmer an 8 btw for the whole tourney, but I also like what they wrote too. One of the better ratings. "Cole Palmer (RW) Did not start a game, which feels a waste, but he still converted a penalty against Switzerland, notched a lovely assist in the semi-final and scored a brilliant equaliser in the final. Too good not to play more. 8" Edited July 15, 20242 yr by Simplymo

Rice has copped a fair bit of criticism for struggling in the buildup of attacks, both for England and Arsenal. Sometimes I think Rice tries too hard to be a "coach's dream" player instead of backing himself. At Arsenal his job is very simple - get the ball to Odegaard or Saka, whoever is free first - and then push forward. England it's much more complicated especially when Mainoo went off and he was lone DM. Palmer had more than his fair of those moments at Chelsea particularly early on, but when we settled into the Caicedo-Gallagher pivot it was clear they would try to find him at every opportunity.

Whenever palmer came on in the euros I was glued to the TV. He made runs and no one passed to him, open space and again no one...walker even waved him to come closer on one occasion but then he's out of position. It was really frustrating for the spectator, I can only imagine how bad it was for players like palmer that wanted to move forward instead of sideways/backwards. Rice definitely looked like he was dragging a weight behind him too. Tiredness, being very conservative, tactics, I don't know mate...

In basketball there is a useful statistical analysis called player efficiency or usage%, and it basically weighs up the amount of time a particular player is targeted by his teammates and compares it to how many chances they create. It helps to quantify a playmaker's ability and identify the focal points of each team. One of the harder problems to solve at international level is that teams aggregate players who are used to being the focal point for their team. The only team in history that has ever really solved that problem is Spain where basically they went the other way and through a whole bunch of playmakers on the park and played a style that allowed them to just control the ball until they worked it out. Every other team has had to have at least one of their stars compromise themselves to make the team work better - think Di Maria and Alexis Macallister being willing runners to faciliate Messi or Griezmann playing in midfield for France. Thing is, Foden isn't actually one of these high-usage players at club level. He isn't the focal point of City in any of the phases of play; at DM the focal point is Rodri, in midfield it's Bernardo Silva and at AM it's De Bruyne. Foden this season has been the reciever, either finishing or providing the final assist, and isn't really involved in the build up. Saka is more involved for Arsenal, but this season especially he has been secondary to Odegaard who is clearly the focal point for Arsenal in the attacking third. Palmer is completely different in that he is involved in almost every attack that Chelsea generate, picking up the ball deep, wide, central etc. At Chelsea the players are constantly looking for him but this won't happen for England unless it is coached and encouraged. Even Saka suffers from the same issue where England work the ball to him either way too deep or way too slowly meaning he has a much harder job of running at defenders, and he doesn't have an Odegaard to play with. Palmer is that player, so if he's going to work for England he needs to play alongside at least one of Foden or Saka and be used in a way that can create for them.

July 16, 20242 yr I am just glad he didn’t get injured during the tournament. Great goal in the Final v Spain and he definitely made a difference to England any time he was on the pitch. Not the greatest analysis I fully accept!😀 Edited July 16, 20242 yr by erskblue
July 16, 20242 yr Loved his goal, especially as it was similar to one he got really wrong in the semi final where he got a bit excited and cut across the ball. He just oozes class and composure. Watch the build up, after he has played Saka in down the line. He's continuously monitoring how the play is developing whilst everyone else just sprints forward looking to support. He holds his run, allows defenders to run passed him and go deep, leaving the space for him to arrive late unchallenged. Southgate or whoever is in charge next has got some decisions to make, because despite not being great this tournament, Foden deserves to be in there too. They get compared a lot because of the city link, the left foot etc but the reality is they are different enough to coexist and they should be a scary thought for every other nation. For us, boy I hope Maresca has a plan. Whatever system he is going to implement, has to have Cole at the centre of it.
