Carried Coventry's attack to a play off final. Having a striker exceeding his xG is a good thing, is it not?

In the short term, yes. Long term when it reverts to the mean he will be exposed for being average

I get the apprehension in signing him, but nobody ever gives alternatives to who we can sign. I've said before, the lack of top strikers in world football is astounding, unless we go for Osimhen all of them are going to be a bit of a risk and even with Osimhen a lot of people on here don't want him.

There's nothing to say it would revert back though. Some people make the most of their chances, some don't.

Alternatives?

Osimhen, Toney, Isak, Openda, Boniface, Watkins

All a better bet than spending 80m on Gyokeres.

If he's 30/35m I'm thinking "maybe he's worth a punt" - like Jackson - but at 80m he has to be the answer as we won't be buying anyone else.

I'd say in that list you've only got Osimhen that has been a consistently high performer in a very good team. The others are as much of a risk as Gyokeres, but that's not to say Gyokeres would be my choice out of all of them.

Watkins has been consistently decent for Villa in the Premier League over several seasons to be fair. Isak looks good for Newcastle but does seem to spend a fair amount of time out injured.

I do like Watkins but I don't know how good he would do for us to be honest. Isak would be great but I don't see him as a viable option because I don't see Newcastle selling to us and as you mentioned he does have a worrying injury record, not ideal when you're spending in the region if £100m.

"Our analysis has also shown that over 50% of strikers signed by Big Five leagues in January fail to score in the league between January and the end of the season. "

Not only don't they not make a difference half of them don't score at all. Mind you neither do the strikers we sign at the end of the season so maybe it doesn't matter when you sign them.

Regarding the striker search, we currently have Jackson, Broja, and Palmer as false 9 options. There's even the possibility of Lukaku returning 🙈. Who would truly be an upgrade to the existing forwards, aside from Kane, Haaland, and Mbappe? Osimhen is the only name that comes to mind for me.

I like the look of him and his club is top in the Portuguese league.

The only other young striker I currently  like is Solanke who will also be very expensive.

Have a feeling Osimhen is just one injury away from disaster............

Lukaku loves the Dulce Vita and will be slowing down soon, also always complaining ........ for team morale not good.

I think Lautaro Martinez would be a good option.  Absolutely killing it this season and has been consistently scoring big numbers for 3 seasons now.

We would never be able to convince him. The guy is in a team winning trophies and is coming up to his peak years. I don't think he will want to risk throwing that opportunity away for a team that has spent the last 2 seasons mid table.

Getting lots of praise from the Sporting fans. Seems to be very hard-working and has the drive to make things happen.

Of course, it's only 1 season and we've seen these 1 seaosn wonders many times before, so I'm still skeptical. But it seems what he has about his game would indicate a better chance that he'll continue to improve.

27 goals in 29 games so far this seaosn.

Can anyone actually explain his all of a sudden recent explosion in form?

With Toney likely going to Arsenal and me hoping we don't meet Osimhen's ridiculous release clause, Gyokeres seems like the most likely target our club will look at.

It's the price though for that one season. That's the issue.

I do like his physique and athleticism though

Ruben Amorim's got a pretty good reputation for overachieving with Sporting, so it might be that

What was the point of signing Jackson for 40m if we're now going to spend 80m on someone else?

Because Jackson was always going to be a 2nd option until the right striker presented themselves.

We still probably need 2 strikers on top of Jackson imo, especially if Jackson is going to be this new Kalou.
