César 'Dave' Azpilicueta

Lucky boy tonight. Brain fart moment should have had a red card and probably a pen (not sure if it was in or out the box). But a def foul, even if the guy went down easily, you cant grab a guy like that. Silly decision from someone who should know better.

He only gave him a little love tap on the belly.

I thught he had a poor game last night in truth, ignoring the penalty claim where he made an almighty balls up he got dragged out of the back 3 far too often and left James isolated.

It wasn't a penalty for me. No way near enough contact for him to go down. If you are giving that as a penalty you are basically saying anytime someone touches you in the penalty box its a penalty. Every corner there is more contact.

Yes but the further away from your torso the touch occurs, your opponent being closer to the ball, the worse it's starting to look. Was definitely relieved when the game resumed last night

Didn't think it was a penalty either but he sure managed to give me a heartattack. Some refs would have given that and he'd have been off as well which would have cost us the game.

Good point! We came back and beat prime Barcelona with 10 men so everything is possible for this club!

Think he did very good overall, nothing spectacular like Rüdiger with his interceptions and runs and lately good shooting from afar as well - except for the gambling bit with touching Carrasco (?) in the box when you know they go down easily.

Bit concerned he is actually playing every game so far under Tuchel..at least that's my impression. Surely he needs to get some rest since we'll need him at 100% at the season finale. Hopefully Thiago and Christensen will be back asap to give him some well deserved rest.

Clear pen for me - it wasn't simply touching a player, it was wrapping his arm around the attacker having made a mistake.  If that had of been a Chelsea attacker, we would have been in uproar.

Let off with one there. Phew

I think people tend to forget (Especially Pundits) that football is a contact sport, not every contact is a penalty.

Was there enough contact from Azpi to bring Corrasco down? Certainly not, therefore the correct call was made.

Have we seen those given? Yes

Is Azpi an idiot for doing it? Yes

Was it a clear and obvious error from the ref? No

Thought the BT pundits and commentators really pushed the penalty narrative last night.

There was minimal contact from Dave and the Atletico player gave up on the ball in favour of going down.

The ref set the tone for the rest of the game by waving play on because he showed he wouldn't give "soft" fouls.

At first it annoyed me but I'm noticing pundits and journalists are trying to really push any potential controversial narratives in games, especially when VAR is concerned. It's lazy/easy journalism and always gets a reaction from fans.

I'm trying not to let it bother me so much now, just see it as pundits are under orders to add to the drama.

He didn't grab him, though. He put his arm out instinctively as if to pull him back but thought better of it. If he'd grabbed his shirt or pulled his arm or waist, then that would be a nailed-on penalty, but he didn't. Contact alone is not a foul. Defenders put their arms on players all the time without a foul being called.

I wouldnt have been surpised if it was given, i dont think it wouldve been soft in the cutre t climate, but at the same time i dont think it was an obvious one.

BT sport made more of it than Simeone did tbf.

Not at his best for me however he seems the one outfield player TT is not willing to give a rest too. Even Rudiger has had one against Everton.

Might just be TT needs to give him the odd game off too. Sunday seems perfect for it, plus the international break.

BT were almost begging for Atletico to get back into the tie last night.

They gave a lot of coverage to the penalty shout despite the on field ref having a good view of it and not being interested.

Didn't give much attention to when Havertz went down in the box despite being kicked on the bottom of his foot by an Atletico player. That wasn't a penalty either in my mind but the amount of contact was conparible with Dave's "offence".

Hoddle was saying Atletico were set up to be more aggressive, attacking wise and we're showing more ambition  than the first leg then a graphic pops up on screen saying they'd only had 25% possession and completed 28 passes to our 120.

They kept saying Felix was showing good touches etc despite not really doing anything.

Doesn't bother me but it does show how much the broadcaster can sway the narrative of the game.

To me it was a clear penalty.  You can see the cloth on the Althetico player’s shirt stretch due to Dave’s grab of him , and I kept waiting for the inevitable whistle from the ref stating that it is being reviewed by VAR, which thankfully never came.  Just dumb dumb on Dave’s part.  On another point, now I know how feels to be a manu fan, in that all the decisions went our way it seemed. I like that

That's 2 recent close calls on pens that I feel should have been given against him. One against Athletico when he wrapped his arms around a player, and the one last night where he pushed the player in the back. 2 utterly stupid things to do, which had zero benefit to the team. Frankly, I think he was saved in both cases by the players he fouled going down overly dramatically. What happened to "with age comes wisdom?

A magnificent servant to the club and rightly will go down as one of our finest fullbacks of all time.

However his levels are really dropping. He never had amazing pace but he is getting slower and slower and making poor mistakes that could have really cost us these last 2 CL games.

I think Frank recognized this that players like him and Alonso their better days are behind them and he tried to get the likes of James and Chilwell to bed in and accepted they would have growing pains.

TT is looking more short term towards extending his contract imo. A good run in the CL and getting Werner and Havertz to perform likely enough, so is basing that on more expierence players.

I think it depends on the player. Azpilicueta has always been your blood and thunder type of player, so he is one of those players that would make desperate tackles when his age starts to catch up with him.

As the rest have pointed out, the problem with Azpi is as soon as he gets turned easily he has panicked and made rash challenges and his immediate reaction is to pull back the player.

We have been extremely lucky against Atletico and now Porto, and luckily we have had strong referees.

Lets not forget for one minute, if that Atletico penalty was given, we would probably be out, and if Porto got one, this tie would be completely in the balance too. That is not acceptable at this level, and someone of his experience should know better, because at the highest level in two Champions League matches, he has nearly cost us them both.

We also have to remember he did the same thing in last year's FA Cup final, with that clumsy challenge on Abameyang. For me that more or less cost us the cup, and meant we ended up trophyless for the first time in a while.  Someone needs to be having a word with him, but eventually it will come back to haunt us like it did then. And heaven forbid if we make it through to the semis or final, he completely messes it up for us.
