Rio Ferdinand a role model - Football Association

The Football Association says QPR defender Rio Ferdinand was harshly punished for comments he made on Twitter because he is a "role model".

Ferdinand was banned for three matches and fined £25,000 for using the word "sket" - a promiscuous girl or woman.

"With nearly 6m followers, Mr Ferdinand is clearly an experienced Twitter user and should know better," said the FA.

"He is, without doubt, a role model for many young people. His responsibility is therefore that much greater."

The 35-year-old's previous indiscretions were also taken into account, with the former England captain fined £45,000 in 2012 for endorsing a tweet referring to then Chelsea defender Ashley Cole as a "choc ice".

The FA's regulatory commission, in its written verdict, said it "considered it an aggravating factor that this was Mr Ferdinand's second aggravated breach in less than three years".

The verdict went on to say that "there is no formal or direct admission and there is certainly no sign of remorse".

So if he wasn't a role model the punishment would have been less. As we all know, he isn't a role model.

This is nothing more than a greedy organisation of dinosaurs fining players large amounts of money to line their pockets.

Role model? More like Mums saying to their kids 'if you pull faces and the wind blows, you'll end up stuck with a face like Rio's'.

Zola's right re. the FA.

Rio Ferdinand is a brilliant role model for philistines everywhere.

I don't think many people know what a philistine is, or rather the meaning of the word.

Someone ignorant, specifically of culture, art, etc?

(Herman Goering springs to mind with his famous quote).

Or those chaps from the Bible?!

Remember all the money they take in fines from us? It'll buy a nice solid gold villa in Barbados.

Ethical, was he not given a suspended sentence over the Ash Cole Choc Ice thing? Would that not explain the severity.

he don't like racist comments, but he dosnt mind dishing out the sexist, racist comments! f**king mo the barman c**t!

Clearly Rio doesn't think comments which are merely racist are offensive enough

He's either a complete imbecile with no concept of social graces or a brilliant troll. I like to think the former.

Feels strange to be snide to him after the last month or so he's had.

Hope he and his family can somehow move forwards

Yes, probably a bit out of order given the circumstances. I wish him all the best bringing up his young family . What happened is in the past and should be consigned to history rather than dwelled on any further.
