May 3, 201610 yr I get what people are saying about Willian, but just think how bad our season would have been without him...wouldn't have Even got out the champs Lge group stage for one in what was a poss poor group...his end product deteriorated in second half of the campaign, but no-one comes close in player of the year vote...and last nights taunting of Tottenham is worthy of a few votes
May 3, 201610 yr Unless you're Barcelona, Bayern Munich or Real Madrid, you have to have a player like Willian. He's tenacious, runs around (sometimes like a headless chicken) till he's completely knackered and the biggest example is when he tracked Lamela's run in the second half which if he hadn't would have been 3-1 and game over. If you put Willian in a side with Hazard and Mkhitaryan for example, you would understand why he's so important to us because the other two won't defend as much. Love him. What do you think of James Milner, for example, who runs and defends just as much as Willian, albeit probably less elegantly given the difference in ability, but can still go up the other end and contribute more efficiently than Willian? I understand and value Willian's role to the squad and quite frankly wouldn't care about his poor output if he was the best in the world at tracking back (Oscar at his short lived peak is probably the closest I've seen to this) but he's not so he needs to make up for that in other aspects and as an attacking player the best way of doing that is by contributing more going forward.
May 3, 201610 yr He's our POTY, I wouldn't sell for £70 million. No-one would offer £70M for Willian (unless the Chinese get on the old Baijiu!!), but I would willingly take a fair bit less.

Great point, Milner has more going forward and good at set pieces. He has more in his locker and how much he cost Liverpool, freebie. 30m is a lot for a runner.
May 3, 201610 yr Milner, James tedious milner? Better than willian? You have got to be kidding. Well Milner has he same amount of prem goals this season and played less games. In the top 10 players for chances created. Not bad for a freebie. Not worth 30m though ;) Edited May 3, 201610 yr by Ernie_blue
May 3, 201610 yr And replace with who? Cuadrado? Musonda? I agree Willian's end product could still improve but he's still an invaluable player for us. Oscar and Loftus-Cheek (if played at #10) need to step up, not Willian. He's our POTY, I wouldn't sell for £70 million. Well Said

It was a facetious figure to be honest, I quoted £70 million simply because it would cost us that amount to sign up Bale. If we can't sign a player of the same calibre of Bale/Ronaldo/Reus I think we're better off with him. If we lose him no doubt there'll be posts on the forum this time next year complaining about lack of workrate etc etc
May 3, 201610 yr Well then, clearly a way better player than Hazard too. Does one bad season make a player then? If Willian is worth 30m God knows how much Hazard is worth.
May 3, 201610 yr Does one bad season make a player then? If Willian is worth 30m God knows how much Hazard is worth. I think you missed the point of my post. No, typically one bad season does not make a player....but neither does one exceptional season. Oh, and I hope Willian is atleast a 30million footballer as we paid more than that for him....

No I knew what you ment, we might aswell say every premier league footballer was better than Hazard then based on this season if we go by your thinking. Milner was used as an example by someone else and I carried it on because it's a good point. There similar players and do the same job for there teams. You need a Milner/Willian in your team but you won't win the league with many of them. I looked at the stats because Willian is Chelsea's best player this season. Milner has the same goals, I think it's 14 assists and in the top 10 for chances created. I'm not bigging Milner up to be a superstar but he does the basics right. Gets wide swings in good crosses. Good set piece taker, runs a lot and was a free. Would anyone pay 30m last summer for Milner though? Chelsea only paid it more to stop Spurs from gettin Willian than getting a a top player.
May 4, 201610 yr I disagree on all points. We certainly did not buy willian just to stop Spurs getting him, its such a ridiculous thing to believe. And the only similarity between him and Milner is they sometimes start a match in a similar position. Willian is infinitely more dynamic and positive, his main positive us his ability to win the ball high up the pitch before the opposition begin their attack and change from defense to attack quickly meaning the opposition can't react. We scored so many goals the past 2 seasons of that. Milner sits much much deeper and doesn't go hunting for the ball. He mainly ambles up the wing, turns back and plays it backwards and infield. He would be hammered by our fans if he played for us.

I certainly don't think someone who chases the ball high up the field is worth 30m, you can get loads of players to do that and in reality that should be the bare min. Willian gets in so many good attacking opportunities and his lack of creativity is really bad. The main similarity between Milner and Willian is they are in their teams because they run a lot, if it was based on quality alone they wouldn't be.

It's just like Maka all over, wasn't until he left when some fans realised what he gave us. Edited May 4, 201610 yr by coco

It's just like Maka all over, wasn't until he left when some fans realised what he gave us. Not often I disagree with you Coco but you mention Willian in the same sentence as Maka? Really? Think everyone appreciated just how good Maka was and why he had a position named after him. Perhaps in future anyone who runs about a lot with little end product should be known as playing the "Willian" role!!!
May 4, 201610 yr Saying someone is dynamic and wins the ball high up the pitch is basically a nice way of saying you run alot mate but when you get the ball most of the time your end product is rubbish anyway. Anyway Maka was a one off who has never been replaced. Willian there are plenty of the same players out there.

Perhaps in future anyone who runs about a lot with little end product should be known as playing the "Willian" role!!! I expect Coco was referring to real Madrid fans and owner who weren't concerned when maka left them. Their players were gutted though, with zidanne saying it was a huge mistake. I have a feeling willian will be held in huge regard by our squad for what he brings.
May 4, 201610 yr i don't deny that Willian is good to have and contribute to the team, but wow some really overrates his contribution to the teamif a team is without Willian/Milner kind of player, is it automatically a bad team and would not perform? of course not, it all depends on the overall strategy, do it actually need a runner in the team? Willian is good, but i think only for certain strategies, especially the ones used by Jose, where wingers are demanded to run up and down the pitch a lot. who knows what will Conte do? i personally hope Conte ditch that strategy and implement a more direct and attacking strategy. will Willian fit in that system? i kinda doubt it. that's why personally i want him to be replaced, only because i have my own preference. but if Conte decided that in his strategy he need a player like Willian, well no problem thenlosing him is not the end of the world Edited May 4, 201610 yr by magichat
May 4, 201610 yr Anyone else let down he didnt try to score with that freekick at the end of the match?
May 4, 201610 yr No I knew what you ment, we might aswell say every premier league footballer was better than Hazard then based on this season if we go by your thinking. No, you clearly didn't get what I meant..... but I'm not strongly disagreeing with what you said either. In comparison to their potential, I would 100% agree.
May 4, 201610 yr Anyone else let down he didnt try to score with that freekick at the end of the match? Not personally - had the freekick been blocked/saved it may have allowed Spurs to counter, the players wouldn't have known how much time remained so there was no point other than to give it to Hazard and run the clock down.
