The John Terry Appreciation Thread

Featured Replies

At times, the decisions made by the club beg belief but I honestly think they want a manager who could give us some stability and stay around for a while. That was clearly the intention when AVB was appointed and if he had done as well as hoped, he would still be here now. And again when Jose returned, if things  had not gone so disastrously wrong, then he too would still be here.

It is obviously crucial that we get this next appointment right (so it won't be FSW!!). Not expecting the new guy to win loads straight away and I'm sure the club have had to revise expectations, but If he can steadily start building and have us in the right area of the table & qualifying for CL, whilst getting the side playing better football and trying to integrate a few of the youngsters, then we can't ask for much more than that.

The club has to utilise him in some way, even on a contract just for his sheer "chelsea presence", fast track him through his coaching, and maintainhis legacy into something fantastical

If this seasons proved anything its that you can't let players like this leave. Losing Cech and Drogba was really bad for the dressing room this season.

Correct but the board is so incompetent and short-sighted that this shouldn't surprise us anymore sadly.

As someone said earlier i actually do fear Mourinho may be able to turn JTs head if he offers him lets say, two year contract at United. He did flirt with City at one point.

That would be to much to take though.

Won't Happen. More chance of us signing Messi & Neymar.

Send us some of that crack your smoking!

Going to United under Jose is perfectly logical.

The arguments against is are purely irrational, emotional ones. But hiring Benitez was an irrationals decision, selling Cech to Arsenal was an irrational decision and not giving JT a contract is an irrational one. There are no certainties in sport, especially when you treat someone of the stature of JT the way in which the club is right now. This club doesn't do sentimentality, loyalty or respect for it's players or supporters so expecting the same in return is a bit rich.

As much as I love JT, I think it is time we moved past him. He can still do it on the field but he has been on the decline and next year will only be worse. If he can be a backup, I would love that but his wages are just too high. Hope he earns his retirement money in MLS or the Chinese league and then comes back in some coaching capacity. He has to be a part of us always.

JT and Jose had a strong bond (as Jose did with all the "untouchables") but by the end, I don't think it was anything like as strong as it once was. The look on JT's face when he was hooked at half-time against Man City spoke a thousand words and I think it was telling, how JT did not come out in a big way to defend Mourinho when he was sacked. I know he posted something, which you would expect, but it's as though he thought it inevitable and accepted it.

I honestly believe that JT is that much Chelsea through & through at he won't sign for another PL club and if he doesn't get another year, may cash-in on the massive China money - who could blame him.

Oh, not this again. Terry at no point flirted with City, not once, it was all media speculation. It's just the way we were giving our players new contracts at the time, we dragged them out for so long. There was never any doubt that John Terry was going to sign a new deal with us.

He's still performing better than the majority of the team, if we are going to get rid of him then we should get rid of the rest of the team too. You are underestimating the importance of having John Terry around. He is the only link between club and fans for me. He is everything to club right now, if we sell him, we lose more than just a good footballer.

But that doesn't say much this season, does it? I agree Ivan's contract should not have been renewed. Kurt has arguably been better than him and so has Azpi. He is 35 and it is great that he can still play at this level but it is time we have to start thinking of life without him. We HAVE to invest in a big CB this year. I think the club is looking some major transfers this summer (something that should have been done over the past 2 years). For that, we have to release JT's wages. We can probably accommodate 2 big players at his wages.

I agree about the link to the fans though. We sacked the other link a few months back. That is why Jose was so important. But that is emotional. It will be tough but the fans will get behind the other players. Maybe Pato :P

He will continue to give 100%and play well until the end of the season. He will then be offered a new contract for hope fully 2 years.Brave, brilliant in the air, excellent passer of the ball and reads the game superbly.A one club man to boot.Demands our utmost respect whatever his age.Long live JT.

Zouma's injury just shows why we need strength in depth. lose JT and we have to spend big to get quality cover for Cahill and Zouma. I think Kurt has done JT a favour with the timing of his injury. If Cahill picks up a knock in the next 6 months then JT will be our only first team centre half, barring Ivanovic. Doesnt that suggest that letting a centre back go would be rather ridiculous? Look what happened to United when they lost Vidic and Ferdinand. They didnt have any strength in depth and have played with Carrick at centre half due to their lack of quality replacements. Keep Terry for back up if nothing else.

ShedEnder in what way doesn't the board do respect for its fans?

As a frequent paying supported I cannot thank the board enough for the great moments I have witnessed in the last 10 years. Just imagine where we would be without the board. For starters JT and Lamps would've left a long time ago and Jose wouldn't have even looked at us.

No player or manager is bigger than the club and that's the boards stance on it. The board haven't told JT that his contract isn't being renewed. They said wait until the end of the season. Only thing is JT doesn't want to wait as he wants a proper send off so that's why he has broke the news and it's being lapped up to a degree where the board are now criminals.

Think alot more respect and appreciation needs to be shown to Roman who over the years have had to put with so much crap from this club and handled every situation well.

In 2011 the board tried to steamroll and undermine the CPO (imagine where the club would've been without them!).

In 2013 the board appoint a man who has been openly hostile to the supporters and is actively despised by them.

In 2015 they not only sack the coach who still had the backing of a large proportion of the supporters, they then fail to give the captain of the club a contract.

It's perhaps not a lack of respect, but a lack of understanding of what is important to the supporters of this club. Roman keeps us at arm's length so it's perhaps unsurprising that he's so out of touch but it can come off as disrespectful and occasionally, outright hostile.

He deserves respect for what he has put into the club but that doesn't mean we can't mourn what has been taken out as well. If you feel as connected to this club now as you ever have then that's fine but I, and a few others, don't. The club seem rudderless and the few things that were there to give you comfort and hope are gradually being taken away.

In 2011 the board wanted to do what they thought was best for the club. They obviously messed up but it was not out of bad intention or greed, so I can't agree with that example.

In 2013 the board hired an interim who made a comment about plastic flags in a tense rivalry between two clubs. Why we took it to heart like he's the enemy forever was beyond me. Jose basically crapped on our support and praised Liverpool last year and nothing was said. I wasn't happy with the rafa appointment as I don't rate him but our hate towards him was way over the top on the grand scheme of things.

2015 they sacked a coach who got us bad press and a court case against us through pure stupidity, a coach who despite his success had us in a relegation fight with no support from the players not even JT gave as much support as he could've done. He lost the dressing room sacking him was Roman's only option after giving it so much time.

The JT situation is pure mind games between him and the board. He wants a contract now and the board would rather wait until a new manager is in. Yes JT is a leader but it's not all about him. The club is far bigger.

I would understand this approach more if we were consistent with all our players coming to end of contract. But if that is the case why does Ivan get a contract sorted out now and not in the summer? Likewise why sign any new players who may not be in the plans of the new manager? Or for that matter let established squad players leave before the new manager comes in?

Ivan more than likely accepted a pay cut to stay here and I can't imagine that thought has even crossed Terry's mind.
Which in my eyes is the issue.

Is Terry worth £125000 a week for his sheer presence alone, I'm sure the board would love to sign him on but without CL football we are going to have to be a little tighter on money and if there isn't any chance of significantly dropping his wage they are going to need to consider all there options.
JT knows this and that is why he has put pressure on them to sign him now rather than seeing how the season develops and has put pressure on the board by touting himself to clubs on the last day of the transfer market in an attempt to make a point and by getting the fans on the clubs back. It doesn't scream to me one club man and it isn't very Captain,Leader, Legend like.
He certainly wasn't putting the club first and has probably suppressed our upturn some what.

That said I would like him here next season but there is more too it than the club trying to disrespect Terry or force him out the club.
