The John Terry Appreciation Thread

"As soon as Chelsea fans get over this ridiculous fixation with John Terry and start focusing on the future they might start winning trophies again."

What a twat Garth Crooks is.

"Ridiculous fixation" - loyalty to someone who has been at the club for over 20 years and captain for over a decade of unprecedented success is apparently a ridiculous fixation.

"Start winning trophies again" - Sort of like the double last season, with Terry playing every minute of the league season - only the second player to do so and win the league since the PL started.

Silly me, I always thought it was the players winning the trophies, and the club focusing on the future, not the fans.

Apart from the semantics: who cares about this insignificant pundit.

Garth Crooks' career highlights:

Garth crooks is a f**king moron making a living by filling a quota.

This cannot be emphasized enough.

And people shouldn't be afraid to say it (assuming you meant that the same way I read it), I cannot stand positive discrimination.

The bloke always talks utter nonsense yet tries to talk and present himself in way that he above other analysts. A complete no nothing, pretentious twat.

What did Garth Crooks win as a player ?

Two FA Cup winners medals in 1980/81 and 81/82.

Can't think of anymore?

Unused sub in second leg of UEFA Cup Final of 83/84 which Spurs won.

Just checked.

No comparison to our JT.

The fact that we all had to google what Crooks won, but nobody will have to do that in a few years' time for JT, kind of says enough.

When did we stop winning trophies?

Are we not the reigning Champions

Yes, Garth Crooks is an arsehole who is also an astonishingly bad pundit. The fact he thinks a club's ability to win trophies is somehow linked to its fans views on the club captain makes him even thicker than he has appeared his whole career i the media.

Conte and Capello seem to be pretty tight and there is no-one outside of Chelsea that knows JT's worth like Capello does. The man walked away from a very well paid and high profile job out of loyalty to him.

It's for that reason I still believe JT will be here under Conte next season.

Let's also not forget that despite it being ignored by all media and pundits, JT is also one of the best footballing CB's in the league, a great two footed passer which I also believe Conte will love to inherit.

On the matter of JT's prosecution after the QPR incident and his subsequent persecution by the FA and vilification by the media ever since, it will be interesting to keep an eye on how this pans out:

England prop Joe Marler was caught on TV calling Wales prop Samson Lee a 'Gypsy boy' in Saturday's game. No lip reading was necessary. He is being investigated for misconduct. There is no doubt over whether he used the term and he has apologised for doing so.

Ofcom received a complaint from a member of the public about Marler’s  comment aimed at Lee.

A spokesman for the broadcast regulator said the matter is now now under consideration before any decision is made whether or not the matter should be taken further.I don't know if the police have been contacted by an 'anonymous' member of the public.

I looked up how things went for JT and found this in the Telegraph:

Sunday 23 October
In the 85th minute at Loftus Road, John Terry and Anton Ferdinand argue. The pair talk amicably enough post-match. Terry issues a statement, referring to reports of a video apparently showing him using racist language in the argument: I thought Anton was accusing me of using a racist slur against him. I responded aggressively, saying that I never used that term.

Monday 24 October
Metropolitan police receive an anonymous complaint from a member of the public. Hammersmith and Fulham police start inquiry as to whether there is a case to investigate. FA receives official complaint from QPR. Chelsea back Terry, who says: Ill do whatever it takes to clear my name. I dont have anything to hide..
Wednesday 26 OctoberLord Ouseley, chairman Kick It Out, urges Ferdinand to be more explicit about his allegation. I have heard nothing from Anton Ferdinand, he says. I hope players when they make complaints [and then keep quiet] can see they are letting down the people who made sacrifices in the past. Les Ferdinand Antons cousin says Terry should never play for England again if the matter is proven.
Thursday 27 OctoberHugh Robertson, the sports minister, wades in to urge the FA to take strong action if the allegation is proved.

I'll be interested to see if the same treatment is dished out to Marler. I'll be interested to see if the police get involved, if a court case goes ahead, if the Sports Minister demands strong action, if Ouseley and Crooks et al get involved, if the RFU throw the book at him, if the Observer newspaper demands he be sacked by his club.

To be clear, under the law, the use of the term Gypsy in this context does constitute racial abuse.

I'm curious as to how the case will be handled. I bet JT is, too.

Crooks is a big fat useless twat.

He still does the team of the week? Cant say I ever look at it.

His opinion is less than worthless to me!

Well, rugby's disciplinary committee ignored their own regulations which state:

"Verbal abuse of a player based on religion, race, colour, national or ethnic origin, sexual orientation or otherwise carries a minimum sanction of a four-week suspension."

This was their decision today:

'Six Nations Rugby are aware of the seriousness of Mr Marler's comment and do not in any way condone what was said. Six Nations Rugby have considered the reports in detail and noted the fact that Mr Marler deeply regretted what he had said and had immediately – and unprompted – apologised to Mr Lee at half-time. They also noted that England head coach Eddie Jones had reprimanded Mr Marler and reminded him of his responsibilities.

'Six Nations Rugby have accepted the explanation provided that the comment was one made in the heat of the moment. Having taken all the facts into account, no further disciplinary action will be taken.'

I wonder if the sports minister will now get involved like he did with the JT case.

Oh, and the same player did this in the same game:

https://vine.co/v/iH3M5LViB0x

He was cited for violent conduct but the committee have let him off with no punishment.

So you can now smash someone in the face with a forearm, make a racial slur, get captured on film doing both, but you'll be let off.

Impressive.

I know the club have said they may still offer a new deal, and he has said he will wait and hope to be offered a new contract, but this is beginning to sound like Terry is on a farewell tour:

He certainly will be remembered. I just hope he can keep creating memories for one more year at least

I still feel the same way i did when the news broke about Terry not being offered a new deal. If he isn't offered a new contract, then my feelings towards the club will be permanently damaged. Yes, i know that no player is bigger than the club, but John Terry isn't just one player, he IS Chelsea. He has given everything for the club, he isn't just a player playing games and picking up massive wages every week, he is a fan, he is one of us. He's put his body on the line for this club.

It should be Terry's decision when he wants to leave the club, that's it, no questions asked. When the people at the top make this kind of decision, it makes you realise how just out of touch with the fans and football they truly are.

It's not just that either. How can the club possibly feel that Terry can't offer us anything on the field anymore? Every club in the Premier League would take Terry now if they could, even though he is 35. How can we think he isn't good enough for us anymore ? we haven't even got Champions League football next season. The last thing we need is to be getting rid of players like John Terry, a player who loves the club and is still a very good footballer.

I honestly think that the club are looking at replacements that conte has identified, along with emanalo and co, if they fail to get a deal in place for one of the targets, then I'd imagine terry will be offered a 1 year extention towards the end of the season. Pretty poor treatment for our greatest ever captain.

He should have a new contract and if conte wants a new centre back, it should be cahill that us moved on.

Cahill is a decent homegrown squad player, which is a position jt could easily fill for 2 seasons, with the added benefit of what he brings to the club off the pitch, helping youngsters and new signings.

Hopefully he stays fit and plays well til the end of the season, and the club see the benefit of having him around.

I think 2 seasons could be pushing it to be honest. Don't get me wrong, he is a club legend and I'm not looking forward to the day where he isn't available any more but by then he will be 37, pushing 38 and age stops for no-one, especially one who has had the battles and knocks JT has had over the years.

Was hoping he would be groomed for a coaching role but the new manager may not want an influential figurehead like JT around to possible undermine him, and that could well be the reason why JT doesn't even get the one year?

This...

As far as  a new manager is concerned JT may seem to have just too much power and influence in the dressing room for his liking, and whether we like it or not (not for me) it is a reasonable assumption for the new man to take.

I just hope the club make his send off something very special, and worthy of the service he has given our club.

I'm maybe in the minority but if the decision has been made to not keep jt then I would prefer that's it, accept hes not here next season rather than keep him for a few games here and there. Having a 30 odd year old defender who's had many injuries come in forma gme every so often would not go well, and I don't want to see a legend like terry possibly losing us games and struggling.

It's a fair point dkw. I think with JT, we all like the idea of him still being around and it's the old cliche (but true) that it's not just JT the player, but the leader and everything else he brings with him. But you're probably right, he did stuggle at the beginning of this season and it was only when he got a run of games that he found form, so having him in the squad just to play here & there, might not be a great idea. It's a tough call and to be honest I would rather we tried to start to blood Christensen - but then he would benefit from playing with JT!!

I don't want Terry to leave us after the awful season we've had-I really don't want a player of his stature leaving us on a low

Not just the coach, but Roman too. Remember what happened to AVB and the players apparently 'revolting'. I think that stung him and I think maybe he's avoiding having such characters around.

2 seasons may be pushing it, however if you consider how much football djiliobodji and Miazga played as 4th choice centre back, then I think he could definitely do that job. He is homegrown, a massive character, and will probably play less than 10 games in that year.

I think as long as he feels physically good enough to be part of the squad, and is willing to be paid at a much lower rate, then the club should keep him in the squad.

What would be the alternative, have a youth players development slowed as they aren't getting the minutes they need? Or bring in a squad player will no doubt want to move within 6 months.
