Players you cannot believe played for us

Ruud Gullit. That first season is still the best I have ever seen any Chelsea player play. It was surreal my team had one of the all-time world greats and Andy Myers in it.

I know he was 33 when he signed for us but how did Chelsea pull of that transfer?

I was pretty excited when we signed George Weah personally, I remember seeing it on Teletext that he had signed, it was one of the first transfers I remember thinking "Wow!" to myself.

Most excited signing for me was Marcel desailly couldn't believe he was playing for us. The first time I met him I picked up one of he's boots and I thought it was huge lol. He had number 8 on his boots but he wore number 6 for us

Have to agree with you there Just.

Loved watching Gullit play for Chelsea - especially when he started off in that sweeper position. I recall an early (maybe his first?) game on a hot sunny August day, think it might have been against Everton, and I just couldn't beleive how much time and space he seemed to make when he had the ball. It was almost as if he played with a force field around him.

On a separate, but slightly related note, how about players you forgot once played for us? Was looking back through some old books and saw Duncan Mackenzie and Gordon Davies and had forgotten that either had played for us (probably because they didn't hit the same heights as they did for their other clubs!)

I was quite shocked when I first found out Vinnie Jones played for Chelsea, I had been a Chelsea supporter but knew him from movies.

Can't recall whether it was that 1st season or not but I vividly remember at Villa away Ruud was playing as sweeper and collected the ball from the keeper just outside our box, Dwight Yorke was close and started chasing him down on his blind side, with all of us in the away section screaming "man on" but Gullit just strolled on totally unbothered. As Yorke got to him Gullit changed direction and spun the ball back with his instep through Yorke's legs and then hit a 30 yard pin-point pass with his left peg.

Crespo for me. It is just a shame we got most of those legendary players when they were in the latter part of their careers. In there primes and we would have dominated the league.

To be honest I can't believe that Bosingwa managed to survive here for 4 years. He's probably the worst right back I've seen play for us in my 24 years so far on this earth. He was shocking defensively and for a supposed attacking full back/auxiliary winger he didn't impress me at all in attack.

Ballack. absolute legend, one of my favourite players in world football and then we signed him. incredible, even though we were a huge club by then, i was still amazed we managed to get one of the modern greats.

on a similar note, when ancelotti signed we were heavily linked with pirlo, and i was in dreamland thinking of him anchoring our midfield. shame it never happened as im pretty sure i heard we were very close to a 20 million pound deal.

Ruud for me too, he was such a legend of the game, that when he came to Chelsea I was shocked.  I think that moment was the start of the "new, European" Chelsea.

After that, I loved it when VIalli came, and - albeit a short stint - George Weah

When we signed my all time favourite player, Hernan Crespo.

On the other end of the scale, I can't believe Yossi Benayoun played for us. w**ker.

I actually thought Bosingwa was good in his first season with us. He got a bad injury and then got it again which made him miss the world cup i think and after that he was never the same player. Under AVB especially he was horrid.

Crespo for me, I was a huge Lazio supporter in my younger days...was over the moon when he signed on

i also remember seeing maniche and quaresma and thinking WTF??? lol the lighter side haha

Definitely Ruud Gullit at number 1 followed by Ballack and Shevchenko.

Disappointed in Shevchenkos return but still glad to has worn a chelsea shirt.
