Following Our Nearest and Dearest Rivals, 2014-15

Hull have IMO done the best deals on the last day. Ben Arfa, Diame, Hernandez & Ramires are quality players, and in the right system I can see them causing some teams problems.

Anderson, Young and Felliani still all at United.

That United squad looks horribly unbalanced and I can only assume they're ready to give up on the 3-5-2 formation already.

How they'll keep Rooney, Mata, RVP, Falcao and Di Maria happy I don't know. My guess is that Mata is looking at life on the bench this season, not like United have European football to justify/allow them to rotate.

Still don't see them finishing in the top four.

So much fire power now at United, but no great defensive quality or midfield strength.

Only 3 strikers now too right? 2 of those have a history with injuries.

Brilliant signing by Man Utd. Assuming he hits form, it virtually sews up third place for them. Recent years have shown that a top class forward pack patches all manner of defensive woes.

It's an odd feeling as a Chelsea fan, but watching almost every team around us cock up their transfer windows while we do our business quickly and get exactly who we want is fantastic.

Even if Falcao hits form, United have a long way to go before we can say they have 3rd place sewn up. Teams above them also have very good strikers, but these sides are also more balanced and have played together longer. United will be playing a team that has never played together before. By the time this team settles down they may be too far off the other teams to catch them up. Van Gaal messed up, he should have got this team together during pre season, not when the season began.

Can't believe City have gotten rid of Negredo, up until he got that injury last season he looked like a superb player. Just makes me think that some players don't really get a chance to prove themselves. Although it could be more down to FFP than anything else.

Utd have spent an absolute fortune. IF they don't make the top 4 this year is their sponsorship slashed from 75 - 35? Or is that if they miss out again the following year?

Do you reckon they could ever go a little bit like Leeds (minus relegation etc), or are they simply too big and powerful ? Will they always be up there?

United will always be quick to buy players. They have plenty of income coming in. Whether they will reach the top four in this season, I don't know. By January we will see where United stand.

Can't see United finishing ahead of us liverpool and city. Think they could have a chance of catching arsenal though.

Top 4 is going to be:

1. Chelsea.

2. City.

Us and Liverpool fighting over 3rd and 4th.

Arsenal in 5th.

Ahh B.J., thought you'd show your face at some point after the transfer window closed. What do you think of United's scattergun approach to buying players this window? Are you sad Welbeck has gone? Bet you're devastated.

I'm not sure Falcao, Blind, Rojo and Di Maria are the answer to your problems, but I suppose in effect your squad has been "strengthened" .

So I take everyones cheeks are red and jaws are sore from laughing at arsene's bold big striking move of bring in welbeck for 16 mil ;). The strikeforce of giroud, welbeck and sanogoals rivals anything madrid or bayern or barca could ever fathom.

I just don't understand Wenger.

He could have got Remy for less money who is a proven goalscorer or paid the same amount for Balotelli who is technically on another planet from Welbeck.

Danny Welbeck is not a good finisher and has 29 goals in 140 odd appearances, that's not a £16 million pound striker.

Don't get me wrong, I love the way the gooners go about their deadline days but you have to wonder what the hell Wenger is thinking.

I guess if they actually wanted Welbeck at the start of the window (highly doubtful) they would have had to pay more in June than now. £16 million is probably a bit below market rate when you consider he's an England international (automatic price inflation), lots of experience, some positive stats, players & managers like to have him in their team and lots of potential.

Looking at what some players have gone for, Welbeck is slightly underpriced, albeit by £2-3 million. Man Utd wanted to dump him given who they signed so he went for a slight knockdown. This however was not their thinking, they clearly panicked. Even it were, I would rather pay a slight premium to get your man early. It feels like Arsenal's indecisiveness has already cost them 4 points.

Indeed its bizarre, add to that he doesn't seem to want to use Joel Campbell at all and the fact had Giroud not got injured he never would have bought another striker, it leaves you thinking does he do this sort of thing intentionally? So that if it somehow works he looks smarter than everyone else?

It is strange, Campbell looked the business during the world cup. I actually thought that a bigger team would come in for his this summer on the back of his performances but that didnt happen and even Arsenal arent really that keen on him. Strange one!

I think it reduces expectations and thus gives him an excuse for failure, and makes him look all the better in the (increasingly unlikely) event they win something. Plus it allows every pissant Arsenal fan to claim a non-existent moral high ground...

Welbeck leaving doesn't inherently bother me, it's just the fact that we're strengthening Arsenal that annoys me. Funnily enough Arsenal fans are pretty down about the deal too.

I think there's no question that we've improved our starting line up and squad. How much exactly and and whether the money we spent will be worth it is another question. We'll have to wait and see.

I don't think we were ever going to fix all our problems in one window though considering how many we had, and we'll always overpay just because of who we are and how much money we've got.

Getting top 4 this season will be difficult but the one big advantage we have is that we've no CL football and we play a lot of the big teams after they've played their CL matches.

Lastly I don't have any problems admitting that you guys have done the best business.

How can B.J. so nonchalantly say United and Liverpool will finish ahead of Arsenal? Is 17 years of evidence not enough to tell you that Wenger specializes in getting his side into the top 4 regardless of how good/poor his side are. If anything the top 4 will be Chelsea, City/Arsenal and United/Liverpool possibly Spurs fighting for 4th place, How do people fall into the trap of writing Arsenal off for the top 4 year in year out, Every year we seem to doubt them and they find a way, If it's not Aston Villa it's Spurs, If it's not Spurs it's Everton, Arsenal always pip teams to 4th, Write them off at your peril.
