Ruben Loftus-Cheek

Featured Replies

I personally have no problem with a bit of tough love, usually Mourinho only says stuff like this to players that go on to do great things for the club. It's up to Loftus-Cheek to now go and prove Mourinho wrong, that is probably why Mourinho has said what he has said.

I wish it was given out a bit more fairly though. Mikel over the years has never been given this type of criticism and i think he is one of players over the years that has really needed a kick up the ass. Mikel doesn't do any of the things Mourinho is supposed to love about his players. He can't track back well, he doesn't bust his gut for the team and tends to switch off. I would love to know why he is always let off.

Everyone moan that the young players of today think they've already made it and have it on a plate too early. Sounds like this is Jose giving RLC (and all the supporters & media) a reminder that he still has a long way to go and there is a lot of hard work ahead of him if he is going to make it at Chelsea.

Fair enough IMO.

Criticising a player's effort is fine, but people were surprised at the 'relationship' talk. In context it's far less worse and I was guilty of overreacting to comments out of context.

Think Mikel is the reason he's doing this. Jose doesn't want to see him go down the same path.

It was said purely for a reaction. It worked with Hazard 2 seasons ago when Jose said Hazard wouldnt die for the team....we all know what happened this season .... if Loftus-Cheek has any bottle and desire it will work with him too.

Part of being a great manager is knowing what one can say to certain personalities to get a positive reaction.

Now the onus is on Ruben to rise to the challenge. Maybe he has had it a little easy in the last year because he is rather dominant at under-18/19 level. Hazard responded wonderfully to Jose's comments after the Atletico match and taken as a whole, those comments from Jose show just what he expects from Ruben.

This lad absolutely has to make it here.

Reads like Jose means what he says. If rlc wants to play in the big league he has to sweat a bit of blood off the ball. There are plenty of alternatives to rlc out there who will work their guts out.

I agree with op that said Jose sounded like he was unhappy with the effort from the junior burgers. You have to walk through the eye of a needle to get into the Chelsea senior team.

On the other hand as a loyal Sydney fc supporter that turns up to every home game I can I'm proud the boys put on a show only 4 days after playing spuds. Our season has just ended as well.

Surely there has to be a better way of relaying him the message than telling him off in the press? After talking him up, he is now being thrown under the bus in public after a friendly game. Some may call it brilliant, but I don't think this is the best way to handle it. Even though he is still a kid, he also has an ego. Criticizing him in public can very easily backfire.

Mourinho will know the boy better than anyone. if he can't take it, Mourinho wouldn't have hauled him off and criticised him in public. He knows what he's doing.

If this happened 15 years ago to JT, everyone would have been up in arms about slagging off a youngster, but we all know his personality now and can see how he would react. nobody is aware of RLC's personality as yet, so the reaction is disgust. i will always back the manager. if it's a question of effort, then he is right to criticise. the one thing no young player should ever lack is effort, and if they are not putting in 100% now when they are trying to break through, then they will stand no chance of ever making it at a top level

Its at this point that the captain will step in with good advice to the young player and hopefully he will take it on board.

JT has always had a tremendous reputation with the youngsters so I have no doubt that you're correct.

The cynic in me can't help but think that this is Jose getting in his excuses early for playing no youngsters next season.

Actually it could be the opposite. Kick them now to have them hungry to be in the next year.

We all know that Jose wants players who are 100% committed. If you read what he said he was pleased with RLC on the ball it was off the ball that he wasn't showing the commitment that JM demands. As has been pointed out Joe Cole and Hazard responded to it. If JM thinks RLC will respond, well this is a test of that desire. We're Premier League Champions, either you want to be here or you can do enough to get a contact at Villa....

Well I hope you're right. Time will tell.

He's never played youngsters. Anywhere. So, I wait with baited breath but hoped to be proved wrong.

His CL Porto winning side had a 19 year old striker or something, and he played Varane at madrid. Zouma here. There is 3.

He doesn't play youngsters who aren't good enough.

Ok that's 3 - but in 12 years at 4 clubs. And how many of them were the clubs own youth products?

Like everyone else I hope this is Jose's way of making sure he doesn't go the same way as Josh. But you can't avoid the facts, he simply doesn't play youth.

I'd be stunned if RLC is anything other than a Carling Cup player next year, and I simply base that on everything we have ever seen from Mourinho! I would love to be proved wrong, but I don't see it. Fingers crossed.

So he had played 3 youngsters his entire career and that is somehow proof that he plays the ones who are good enough? Lets be real here, Mourinho dorsnt have a good record with promoting youth, part of that is because he never stays at a club long enough, but part of that is also who he is as a manager. I think people are right not getting their hopes up.

Well, i guess we won't see much of him next season...

Sounds a bit harsh for me. Looks like Mourinho is paving the way to buy players instead of giving our youth a chance.

Exactly. The excuses are already coming.

Mourinho will never trust our academy players for the long term

Never has and never will! Despite that we kid ourselves, every time!!

3 off the top of my head. Certainly better than "Never" and yes, he isn't usually around long enough, and the clubs he's been at are the top 1%. Not many make it.

He doesn't have a great record of playing youth but he's made a point of saying it's over if the things he should be judged on this time around.

Our academy is too good and FFP is too real for us but to take youth development seriously. Maybe that's why he's putting this type of pressure on Ruben.

He would have sold Mikel as soon as he came back, if that was the case, I haven't heard Mourinho complain about Mikel once either.
