Diego "the guv'nor" Costa

Featured Replies

I think he'll get a ban for the scuffle with Koscielny. Which is quite silly really but just highlights the nature of the game today. Although that said I thought the Gabriel red was soft.

All handbags, could have been sorted without any cards

Gabriel had a choice, to retaliate or not to retaliate; Costa did not make him do anything.

I may be wrong, but a flailing arm, backwards, is not the same as facing someone and poking them in the eye or something. Unless, of course, Costa had wing mirrors.

Not an excuse, an observation, Costa's early life has shaped him. I hope, for his sake, he is refined.

Motd2 very interesting.

Would you happen to know if it's possible to re watch that anywhere?

Nothing to do with the nature of the game, its because its costa and chelsea, near enough every week there is scuffling in the box like that with defenders and attackers

Unfortunately I think he will get retrospectively banned. There's no way that Mike Dean hasn't seen the footage and everyone's comments about his performance. He'll use Costa to show how he didn't see it and thereby justifying his performance.

Plus, there's too much media pressure on Costa. If he gets away with it then it sends out the wrong message.

Thing is, I'm still furious that Ashley Barnes never got banned for his tackle on Matic last season. That was an awful tackle and he got away with it.

He needs to be so very careful now for a run of games. Refs will be asking for linesmen and fourth officials to keep a beady eye on him more than ever.

The batting in the face is not good and is a red card waiting to happen. I don't mind the constant verbal abuse, the chest bumps and a bit of argy bargy but hands in the face is just stupidity and he has to be reminded where to draw the line.

Dean said he didn't see Ramires hit Larsen the other year, even though he was 5 feet away looking at the incident. There's a still in the Ashley Barnes/ Matic thread. So he has precedent for lying to the FA panel to get a retrospective ban for one of our players.

I bet there's no retrospective action, especially as Dean booked him after the initial melee.

The FA can't been seen to be re-officiating games, it undermines the match day officials.

Yes and they'll leave themselves open, that is they will need to be seen to do it consistently.

When teams play us, it is an accepted tactic for defenders to use the 'dark arts' to wind him up. No pundit or journalist has ever written a word condemning teams for this approach, which basically amounts to trying to get him sent off. Yes, Costa could have had a red for making contact with Koscielny's face, but the sh!te he's getting in the media for everything else he did yesterday is beyond a joke.

And the sanctimonious bleating from Arsenal fans is hypocrisy of the worst kind. On their last three visits to the Bridge (when their beautiful football has yielded zero goals) they have had three red cards. Yesterday, Koscielny's two footer on Oscar should have been a red card but Dean ignored it. Last season they should have had FIVE reds: one for Koscielny for his trip on Hazard when clean through. One for Sanchez for punching Ivan. One for Wellbeck for a two-footer on Fabregas. One for chambers who was let off a second yellow after a cynical foul. And one for Whinger for shoving Jose. You can add in Ospina knocking out Oscar which was a blatant red last season.

They are officially the team with the worst disciplinary record in Prem history, and get the media are so up their a**es that they are always portrayed as a club with class who play the game the right way. Utter bollox, in my view. And Wenger is the most ungracious loser in the game, as Jose correctly pointed out after the game.

Spot on fella great post .............how Le Arse can ever take the moral high ground on discipline is a joke . They are a dirty team , the team of Henry Vierea etc. were masters at "accidently" taking players out by blocking runs when the ref was not looking or holding hands up when coming back from an offside position but blocking the pass .........gimme a break the are now the Crusaders of fair play ......

The other fact is Costa's card is already marked by Ref's he probably gets one in eight decisions in a game , some scandalous tackles and clear penalties are never given because it is him ...

The shrill hysteria over this is ludicrous.

The incident with the flailing arms was slowed down and made out to be linked to the chest bump and Gabriel incident. It was about 30 seconds before and was in the context of competing for an aerial ball. The only reason we're talking about it is because it was highlighted on the TV coverage. That sort of thing happens every time there is a corner.

Not sure what you mean, it was all linked?

That still doesn't explain why he gets mad at Koscielny though, especially when he was the one doing the fouling. Just doesn't make sense to me.

I'm saying the incident when you watch the replay of the game the flailing arms happens well before the chest bump. It's just before Pedro's shot and happens very quickly. They then tussle again afterwards as the ball comes back into the box. Costa goes to ground and gets up with the chest bump.

Essentially the flailing arms are a beat up. They happen at least 30 seconds before the main incident and Koscielny doesn't react he just gets on with the game.

Because Koscielny bundles Costa to the floor when the second cross comes in.

Diego bounces back to his feet, chest pumped out and puts Koscielny on his arse.

Below video, from 1:10 that's the initial coming together and then at around 1:16 is when Costa is bundled to the floor and it all kicks off.

FA will be shooting themselves in the foot if they charge Costa

Legislation is based upon precedence, if they charge Costa than they will have to review every single corner every single match as Costa did nothing that does not already happen during any set piece. (Mainly by CB's)

He's a beautiful, beautiful man.

Never change Diego, never change.

I know what you are getting across there FC but I can't fully agree.

He is going to HAVE to change his ways a bit and I do hope the coaching team and his team mates are having a word in his shell-like. He will now be a marked man more than ever and defenders will be out to wind him up now more than ever. I can just see it in a crunch CL game and he takes the bait and we'll be down to 10 men at the worst possible time.

He played a big part in us getting the victory on Saturday but another day, the same sort of display could make him responsible for a reverse so he has to work on his anger management!

Regardless of if he get’s charged (Which I expect) then refs and assistants will be warned to keep close attention to Diego in future games, he simply won’t get away with throwing his hands in players faces. I’d think defenders will goad him more as they know the guys a loose cannon and will snap at the slightest altercation.

Of course the media have went OTT with this but they seem to have a thing for Costa and his ‘antics’ so it will be all the more reason that the FA will want to make an example out of him at some stage.

He's been a marked man since his first game when he was wrongly booked for diving against Burnley.

He's a big boy, he can look after himself. We keep hearing that defenders are out to bait him and wind him up but it doesn't work.

He enjoys it all too much for them to bother him, at full time he's always the first to approach opposing defenders and embrace them because as soon as the full time whistle blows it's done.

He complete in check with his emotions, he's too cool and calculated not to be.

Basically he's a genius and I won't have a bad word said against him.

We'll agree to disagree! Another day, another ref - he could have easily gone Saturday.

I didn't have a problem with any of it other than the bit where he went down and brandished the card at the ref, looking to get the opponent booked. I hate that, whether it's our players or opposition players. No place for that in the game and again he could have ended up being carded because of it.

Agreed about waving the imaginary cards, pet hate of mine and personally think it should be a bookable offence.

This is the thing, half the time I can't work out whether he's the one getting wound up or doing the winding up! Either way there's a red card coming his way very soon.

I can see exactly why people hate him and let's face it we'd all hate him if he played for anybody else.

I love his fighting attitude and especially love it if it pisses the Goons off, but he did cross the line on Sat with hitting Koscielny and waving card signs at the ref. Can't stand either of those things.
