Diego "the guv'nor" Costa

Featured Replies

He's never been sent off while playing for us.

He arguably won us the game yesterday.

What are people complaining about?

He's a pantomime villain. Abit like David Luiz. They're great when they play for you but incredibly frustrating if you're playing against them.

Both Danny Mills and Shearer were positive about Costa last night. Mills even said that he couldn't see a red card in anything that Costa did yesterday.

It's faux outrage, no other player gets micro analysed like Diego does.

There's plenty of grappling, arms raised etc on almost every corner in every game.

Trying to make out what he did is something no one else does is laughable.

Exactly, I dont remember such scrutiny when Skrtel assaulted Costa twice last season. Or when Skrtel stamped on De Gea, it barely registered with the media.

Basically I love it.

This is a competitive sport and some seem to forget a physical, contact one too.

Diego is awesome, the ultimate warrior, the guy who loves a scrap and went shirk away from the big occasion.

Martin Keown said yesterday he would have loved to have played against him... Sounds about right.

He's a bar steward is our Diego but this is a league built on bar stewards. Keane, Wise, Vieira were scrappers in midfield the likes of Keown, Ruddock and Skertl leave their mark on you in defence and Duncan Furguson, Luiz Suarez and our own Diego always make sure you known you've had a game against them up front.

Since when was running into people an offence? You should be able to square up to people and give them a cheeky shoulder without getting a card, anything to do with raising the hands is a yellow.

That's why Gabriel and Costa both got yellows as they raised their hands to each other. The ref didn't see Costa slapping Koscielny during play that's why he didn't get sent off, this is because Costa is smart, knows the rules of the game and knows what he can do when the officials aren't looking.

Like Alan Shearer on MOTD said, there's a fine line and Diego crossed it (specifically the flailing arms and the scratch to the back of Gabriel's neck). By no means is that a criticism however, I wouldn't want Diego to be any other way, but I dare say we'd all be laying into him had he been sent off at a time when we were dominating Arsenal. Had Walcott or Giroud done the same on any of our own a red card would have been a fair outcome imo, but the simple fact of the matter is Diego got away with it. I'll have no complaints if he receives a 1 match ban (though anything more would be excessive).

Fine lines but what happens when he really crosses them and he gets sent off and misses 3 crucial games. He needs to calm down because he's action will come back and bite us. Badly needed win yesterday so Im not bothered by he's actions but I will be in the future.

Costa winds defenders up but keeps a cool head... and then they lose theirs. If Costa gets himself and a defender booked at the same time, that's a win for us cos the defender HAS to keep making tackles a risking a red for the rest of the game.

Costa hasnt been sent off for us despite everyone saying for over a year that he is a red card waiting to happen, we're still waiting! He knows what he's doing, he stays in control and lets the opposition work themselves up over it.
I think opposition defenders are told to go into the match and wind up Costa, but it backfires cos he just throws it straight back at them and they end up getting themselves wound up and in the book!

I dare say we'd all be laying into him had he been sent off at a time when we were dominating Arsenal.

For me, that's the crux. The ref takes a dim view of his hand in Koscielny's face, and he's off, and we're up against it. We go on to lose and a lot of people defending him here would be crucifying him.

Gabriel was stupid, very very stupid, and we got the advantage, but we could easily have been a man down instead.

So, Jose gets them in at half-time and gives out his instructions, telling the team how we're going to beat a team with 10 men. He also tells Costa to watch his step, as the ref will be just looking for an excuse to send him off. Costa didn't go anywhere near a challenge second-half, and then, late on, when we were 2-0 up, he couldn't help himself, and barged into Oxlade-Chamberlain needlessly, and Jose immediately subbed him, with Costa muttering things to himself as he came off, like he hadn't done anything wrong. Well he had, he had disobeyed Mourinho, and in that moment, showed he couldn't be trusted, his temperament got the better of him. Jose made a big play about emotional control after the game. You can bet he's saying the same thing to Costa in private. For me, he lost a little bit of control yesterday.

Incidentally, there's footage of a previous skirmish between Gabriel and Costa when they both played in Spain. Costa nudges Gabriel and Gabriel goes down like he's been shot and gets Costa booked. If anyone can post that please do.

Edit: Actually, I'm not sure Costa got booked, but while we can castigate Gabriel for his fall, and we don't know what happened before, the nudge is typical Costa, and there's no point anyone denying it. Now, all well and good, it's just a nudge, it didn't kill anyone, it's a man's game and all that, but, he gets spotted doing anything like that again, and he'll be off, that's the rod he's created for his own back.

Art Vanderlay, Architect, was the fictional alter ego of George Coztanza in Seinfeld.

George in reality was an overweight, balding loser with massive insecurities. I suspect probably very much like the Art Vanderlay who has chosen to share his opinons on the Shed End recently.

You forgot 'short'.

Gabriel had a choice, to retaliate or not to retaliate; Costa did not make him do anything.

I may be wrong, but a flailing arm, backwards, is not the same as facing someone and poking them in the eye or something. Unless, of course, Costa had wing mirrors.

Not an excuse, an observation, Costa's early life has shaped him. I hope, for his sake, he is refined.

Motd2 very interesting.

I think it's this.

The initial problem had nothing to do with Gabriel he involved himself and paid the price. Wenger also called the ref weak perhaps he should get punished for that.

All last season rival players did their best to provoke Costa and get him sent off ,they know he could start a fight with his own reflection, light the blue touch paper etc. He is already a marked man so yesterdays events won't change that. I love Costa's combative nature but I realise not everyone has the stomach for it. I was glad to see he got his mojo back yesterday a most enjoyable performance.

Drogba.

A God of a footballer

We gave that a go last year, did not really work out, if we could have 2006 to 2012 Drogba then yes, hopefully Bamford cuts it at C.P. and we have another legend to look too.

As always, spot on
