February 2, 201610 yr There's no way we can keep getting gus to come in and steady the ship. He's either going to stay on or retire. Maybe this is wishful thinking on my part. I actually think Guus wouldn't mind it. A well-paid 6 month contract in a club you know well, where "acceptable" means keeping a group of ultra-skilled players out of relegation and "satisfactory" means a mid table finish. Sounds like a great gig for someone like him. We could easily give him a one year extension if we can't find a suitable man to take over. I wouldn't mind at all if he stayed. An ideal arrangement might be for Guus to prepare Drogba. At the beginning of the season he'd do most of the work, but as the season progresses, he cedes increasing responsibility to Drogba. Wasn't there talk of a similar arrangement for Manchester United with Ferguson and Giggs? Does Drogba have a UEFA manager license? Edited February 2, 201610 yr by offside
February 2, 201610 yr We could easily give him a one year extension if we can't find a suitable man to take over. I wouldn't mind at all if he stayed. Biggest problem with solution is it leaves us in limbo for a further year. Can we afford to not strengthen the squad in that time, whilst waiting for the right man to be appointed? The truth is we can't, Guus is a very likable man who has previously served us well and answered the call again, he is though 70 this year and the six month stint is about right for him. We have to bite the bullet and take a punt on someone younger in the hope we at last get it right... at least for 3 yrs anyway.
February 2, 201610 yr I don't care what number it says on his birth certificate, as long he's doing a good job, which he is , then he can stay for another year. Im bored with it now, in the words of Duncan Ballantyne I AM OUT
February 2, 201610 yr Guus keeps saying he isn't staying!!! He is almost 70, clearly he wants to retire. When he came here he said his wife was not happy, because they had to cancel their holiday. How many times does he have to say he isn't staying.

And the ones that aren't retired but ca afford it almost never take a brand new job. Guus is the same age as my father. If my father wanted to take a 6 month stint with low expectations but high potential personal fulfillment, I'd say go for it. If he wanted to take a "long term" position with enormous stress, almost impossibly high expectations, constant scrutiny, which would almost certainly end in him being sacked in humiliating fashion, I'd have him declared mentally insane. Yeah, when you put it like that...............................
February 3, 201610 yr Looking at the pics today in the paper of the players and Guss am really sad he will be leaving you can see how happy the players are with him hes even getting involved in the training playing with the players this is what we need from our new manager Carlo was like that pissed we missed him.
February 4, 201610 yr Disappointed with him last night..,has little to lose and plays Watford like they're Barcelona...leaves hazard on bench for that long? Bollox
February 4, 201610 yr Guus certainly has his favourites in the squad and seems reluctant to deviate away from his game plan. Using just one substitute in a game that ended 0-0 is bizarre, it reads as though he was content with the result. Not losing, rather than winning, appears to be his aim. Only recent wins were playing against 10 men for 75 minutes and beating a relegation threatened Championship side. Looking at his games in the league alone since taking over I just don't feel like much has changed.
February 4, 201610 yr Guus' lineups are as predictable as Jose's, except for Mikel. To be honest, I'm not mesmerised.
February 4, 201610 yr tbh i dont think he has the tacitcal knowledge ...He made only 1 sub which was oly within 70 mins tbh .. Hazard should have came on after the second half even sgtarted or nevermind the match ..

I agree entirely with the first part FC - I do thing Guus's caution cost us the 3 points last night - very frustrating. But I do feel a lot has changed since he took over. At times, we are playing much better football and actually look like scoring again (despite the 0-0 last night!) And the players seem happier which is reflected in our improved play. We have ridden our luck at times, but remain unbeaten and hopefully that is breeding confidence and we can kick-on for the remainder of the season. I do want to see him use his subs better though. Must be a little demoralising for the guys on the bench not to get on when the score remains 0-0.
February 4, 201610 yr Mikel will continue to play no matter what under Guus. It's fine against teams who dominate us but when we are looking to be on the front foot it's just never going to work. Poor managerial display last night

Poor managerial display last night I don't think so. He looks better when we are attacking, like yesterday at second half.
February 4, 201610 yr I don't think so. He looks better when we are attacking, like yesterday at second half. Most of our players looked better in the second half, including Mikel. But that is the dilemma with Mikel and why many Chelsea fans don't rate him as highly as others. Ideally, you want him to be at his best when we are under the cosh. But in the first half last night, he & Matic couldn't get near some of the Watford players and they were going past them at will, which led to our defence struggling and JT looking his age. We did a lot better in the second half which was probably a combination of us improving and the Watford players tiring and not being able to maintain the tempo.
February 4, 201610 yr It's amazing how things change in the space of one game. One minute Guus should stay and the next he's a poor manager.
February 4, 201610 yr He is not a poor manager, but he is not long term either. He mismanaged last nights game, Hazard came on 20mins too late, also think Oscar should have gone off for Kenedy. He is excellent at arm round the shoulder, morale boosting and raising spirits is Guus, but he isn't the guy to challenge for the title with us next season. I also don't think we have any intention of considering him tbh
February 4, 201610 yr It's amazing how things change in the space of one game. One minute Guus should stay and the next he's a poor manager.Totally. How short our memories are! Look at this thread, especially the later pages. http://www.theshedend.com/topic/28712-relegation-a-real-possibility Guus isn't a perfect manager, but considering the mess he inherited, there is no doubt that he's gotten us out of the relegation battle, the players are performing better, everyone is happier. I do wonder if Guus is a little paranoid about relegation though. Just two weeks ago, when basically everyone thought that relegation was no longer a threat, he was still talking about how concerned he was.

Apart from anything else I see Guus filling a position thay may have been filled by a Scouse loving Irishman with dry skin and drier lips. Thank you Guus.
February 4, 201610 yr You really cant win with some fans Guss did the right thing he gave watford the respect they deserve if he had done the opposite and lost fans would still complain at this point SOME and i stress SOME of the chelsea fans are becoming the worst moaners they are starting to turn into Arsenal. Few months ago we would have lost this easily .....point away happy now lets beat United at home. Edited February 4, 201610 yr by Brutos
February 4, 201610 yr Some people need to grow up. We were getting d*cked by every team we faced with Jose. And now because Guus is doing what he does best and is steadying the ship we've got the moaners out in force. I'll probably get some stick but it's the truth. One good result against MK Dons, and now we're expected to beat everything we face. 0-0 is a decent result and all it took was us to go gung ho for one attack and leave JT and Zouma against Deeney and Ighalo and that's game over. So be grateful for how things are going, you don't switch confidence on and off. Agreed Mikel and Matic was overkill but Guus played a team he had faith in and they didn't lose so his faith was repaid. When Jose announces his role at Man utd a lot of the Jose brigade will be happy once again.
