January 16, 20224 yr Can someone give me real examples from yesterday because apparently he had a horrorshow. I saw the game and thought he was fine like the rest of the defence. Took a yellow and got beat once or twice for a cross i guess. What really came from his side? His forward play was also okay, put Odoi through and made a pin point cross to Azpi who squares it in front of goal, just two examples. I just know if Alonso was in Kante's position and made that lazy tackle to KDB right before the goal he would be treated very differently than like Kante.

He is often so harshly criticized and he doesn't deserve it at all.

He got burned for pace on 1 on 1s in the last 2 matches, but that became less prominent as the last match went on when Ziyech tracked back to help him. I thought people should have known for a long time that if the system is set up right for him, the winger or DM will help him defend and he can help in attack equally.

Got skinned for pace by Sterling within the first 7 minutes of the game and so he hauled him down and got booked so for the rest of the match was trying to avoid touching anyone. Sterling pulled him inside out quite often after that which put a lot more responsibility onto Sarr to cover. Outside of the front 3 he was probably the worst of the rest in my opinion. If we do bring in another left wing back this month I wouldn't be surprised if they displace Alonso as first choice for the remainder of the seaosn.

February 13, 20224 yr I have it on good authority that it's to satisfy the oral fixation after the club banned the players from smoking cigars after winning a trophy.

February 14, 20224 yr Few rumours that he is frustrating his team mates at the moment with his poor play. Quite telling I thought that he didn't get any minutes in the final on Saturday. He's put in quite a few lackluster performances since Chilwell's injury and hasn't stepped up as we needed him to. Shame really because at the start of the season he was playing quite well and initially kept Chilwell out of the team.

February 20, 20224 yr That turned out to be a master stroke from TT, suddenly bringing on a LWB who could throw in a decent cross.
February 23, 20224 yr Might sound harsh but it's a shame we didn't have a more adequate back-up to Chilwell going into the season. I think we'd still be within striking distance of City if we did and we'd also have a good shot at another Champions League title. But Alonso is such an obvious weak spot that literally any team can exploit it. He's ball watching, he's slow, can't defend and gives the ball away when pressured and it's so frustrating to watch. We aim to press high but on our left flank you simply need to loft a ball over Alonso's head and he's completely lost his man and voila, goalscoring chance.
February 23, 20224 yr I liked him coming on late at Palace where he got the assist. Up until then we had struggled to get decent balls delivered from the left hand side.

Makes you wonder why bring back Kenedy just to have him behind Alonso, Sarr and foe all we know Saul too. We seem to have no interest in using him.
February 28, 20224 yr Author Yesterday was probably Alonso's best game in a long time. Salah ruined him at the Bridge last month, but it was the complete opposite yesterday. Salah wasn't in the game at any point, Alonso defended him perfectly.

Kept Salah quiet and got forward quite a lot as well. He actually did 2 jobs very well simultaneously. I thought he was very good yesterday.

Lille had a lot of joy down his side, the header off the post the main one that stands out. Every cross was poor, 2 free kicks noway near, and as you pointed out wasted a good chance. He is anlot better than that, he was poor.
