If Cucurella started the season strong, no one would say that it made no sense. To build a team capable of challenging for major honours, you need to spend. When we have gone for cheaper players in the past (Zappacosta, Emerson) we have been criticized and when we go for players now who haven't hit heights running, the board will still get flack. Cucurella was brilliant at Brighton. But because he has started the season slowly and looked a little out hid depth, fans have already decided it is a waste of time. It may not work out but I defo don't agree that it did not make sense. The wingbacks are crucial to our system and when James and Chilwell were out, we saw how much it affected us and getting a player on paper who offered everything in that position made sense. I hear what you are saying but Cucurella feels like a 60m Zappacosta since he signed. That's the issue

We are buying players before their peak at values that seem relatively reasonable. 30m for a capped french CB and 62m for someone who has lit up the cl this year. Both in the under 21 bracket and on contracts that will mean we retain their services as they reach their peak. We don't know what we are spending on wages, we don't know what the add ons are. What Everton was doing had no logic. Players that no one else wanted reaching the end of their careers. Who cares if they have resale value if they performed like sh*t for most of the time because we are going to take a big L if that happens. For example Havertz, we bought him for 70+, how much would we got if we sold him now? probably less than 30m because of how sh*t he is playing. In addition, he is on massive wage and an expiring contract in 2 years so we either sold him for a big L or we take the bullet to re-sign him to a long deal despite he doesnt deserve one. What about KK? 31 years old with 4 years contract and a big wage and performed like a headless chicken all the time? What about Cucurella? 62m for a bang average LB that is worse than Alonso? What about Fofana? 70+m injury prone player who played 4 games so far? What about Felix? 15m for 5 months of sertvice with no buy option? What about Aubameyang? 10m for a striker that is terrible and no resale value? What I mentioned above is already nearly 200m pour down the drain with no return, these add up fast dude.

I think everyone agrees some of our summer transfers were w**k. I just think it's clear with the activity this window they've been much smarter. Felix something has gone on there. I dont know what. It obviously puts us in pole position to sign him in the summer, he is clearly quality, but there will be something shady in the background.

Do they? Everyone and their dead grandma know we need to fill 3 holes - RB, Midfield, and an out-and-out striker what did they do until now? Felix - another winger/creator Mudruk - another winger Badiashile - CB where is our RB? our midfielder? if they spend so much money on a winger just to hijack Arsenal why dont they spend on Enzo? We need a midfielder so much more than another winger

All the money up front also doesn't help the FFP either

They must know something we don't because someone has to tell them that this kind of investment in an area is super risky. The only saving grace is that the players we sell equally go for ridiculous money. Do they still go for ridiculous money though, now that you know she, her, the one that used to magically extract those valuable sales, Marina has left.

January 15, 20233 yr From the commentator in the Palace game: "I saw an interesting stat earlier: since Todd Boehly bought the club, Chelsea have bought more players than they've scored league goals." Didn't sound right to me, so I thought I'd have a look. The 'Clearlake' acquisition was announced on 30th May 2022, eight days after our last game of 2021/22 against Watford, so all goals will be from the current season. All signings will also be from the current season, as no signings were confirmed between 30/05/2022 and 01/07/2022. We have apparently made 16 permanent signings this season (18 if you include the two loanees): Permanent: 01/07/2022 Eddie Beach (GK) 13/07/2022 Raheem Sterling (FW) 16/07/2022 Kalidou Koulibaly (DF) 16/07/2022 Omari Hutchinson (FW) 02/08/2022 Gabriel Slonina (GK) 04/08/2022 Carney Chukwuemeka (MF) 04/08/2022 Zak Sturge (DF) 05/08/2022 Marc Cucurella (DF) 11/08/2022 Tyler Dibling (MF) 19/08/2022 Cesare Casadei (MF) 31/08/2022 Wesley Fofana (DF) 01/09/2022 Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (FW) 05/01/2023 Benoît Badiashile (DF) 07/01/2023 David Datro Fofana (FW) 07/01/2023 Andrey Santos (MF) 15/01/2023 Mykhailo Mudryk (MF) On loan: 01/09/2022 Denis Zakaria (MF) 11/01/2023 João Félix (FW) At the time of speaking, we had scored 21 league goals this season (now 22 with Havertz's winner against Crystal Palace). So we can conclude that this commentator is, predictably, full of sh*t.

Unfortunately there's plenty of evidence that being a millionaire doesn't mean you can successfully run any business. Todd made his money in finance and insurance etc, not by running a football club. Anyway, the way it's going I reckon he's using us a massive debt to offset profits elsewhere in his portfolio as some sort of tax scheme.

January 15, 20233 yr Just rush them all in before the gate is shut by FFP next season. Those guys on 7 years deal, wouldn't be surprised if some of them out on loan for a couple of years.

Yeah FFP runs on 3 year cycles so buying a £100m in 3 instalments makes a huge difference. For example, for Enzo, Benfica wanted the release clause in one payment. That would add £100m onto our books. However with Shakhtar, they were happy to have staggered payments (don’t know exactly the amounts) but an example would be £25m + £25m + £25m. The amortised fee and contracts get around FFP

Can't think of any other clubs giving such long contracts for FFP reasons though. Isn't it risky if players turn out to be useless?.

The amortised fee and contracts get around FFP Whether you pay the fee in one instalment or on a phased basis isn't all that relevant. It's all about amortisation over the contract length. Its a standard concept in accountancy which means you charge the expenditure over the life of the asset. Its more routinely called depreciation for fixed assets but for intangible assets or football players it's called amortisation. What I'm not sure about is what happens when you renew a contract before it runs out. When you revise the useful life of say a building or revalue it you then change the annual depreciation charge. Not sure how that works with players and FFP.

So for the new guy, it would be £89m divded by 7.5 years = £11m is added onto the books which I believe is relatively cheap.

The other thing is puzzling me is how do the new players fit into our 25 man squad? How do we get round that ?
