Passing sideways is what creates options, shuffles the oppositions block over the pitch. If anything, passing sideways is exactly what he should be doing if he can't go forward.

You need a balance between the two and Silva can be guilty of trying to look for the progressive pass too much, but I prefer that over a player who always just moves the responsibility over to another player.

I don't like it when he receives the ball and walks with it like it is a training session whilst the opposition have plenty of time to get in a defensive block. When he starts doing this it starts creeping in with the rest of the team.....

September 17, 20232 yr He's always been inclined to do it but this season he's been extreme about holding on to the ball in the build-up phase. Today too, held on to the ball for forever when he got it.
September 18, 20232 yr Some of the away fans at Bournemouth have said they applauded Thiago when he came over at the end to applaud them, and got told by multiple other fans to stop doing that as the players only deserve a negative response.

Yeah thousands of people hurling abuse probably helps the players with confidence , especially the youngsters!

September 18, 20232 yr Does not sit well with me some of our fan base think he should be booed. Wish he had not signed that new deal and gome back to Brazil. He does not deserve this cr@p.

Idiots. On at least 2 levels: not applauding our players who come over to thank the away supporters and telling others how to respond.

Won’t be popular with everyone, bearing in mind we have zero experience in the team, but for me Thiago is the instigator of the “sssllllooowww” play. Great defender, but my god, does he slow things up and I’m convinced that slow plays rubs off on the rest of the team…. I'm with you, think it was the Forest game and it was f'ing painful to watch him dawdling with it, then waving his arms around as if to send a message... and of course by the time he's finished doing that 3 or 4 times he's 1) Broken our rhythm and slowed our play down and 2) To the delight of the opposition, given them time to get back into position and taken any pressure we were exerting on them - off. How does every team we lose seem to get a goal against us? 9/10 They move the ball out from the back as fast as they can and get it to a runner up the pitch... who then lays it off to someone else to put in the net. Why can't we do that? 9/10 because TS is standing there waving his arms about... waiting for someone to get into the perfect position. Got to drop him, he's too bloody slow. September 21, 20232 yr He's not going to be here next summer and there has to come to a point where Poch needs to let Disasi/Badiashile/Colwill sink or swim as a pairing.

As I said, great defender, and he was my player of the year when Mount won it second time round, but we need to speed things up and for that reason alone, he needs to be dropped. I do not see the point with Thiago literally walking out with the ball, waiting for an opposition forward to get close to him and then to turn around and play it back to Sanchez....

I think he started doing it at the end of last season, he's now doing it almost all the time... It breaks up our play, destroys our rhythm and makes it easy for the other team to defend against our attack (or lack of it).... so I don't see why not. People wonder why our attack is so toothless... his dawdling on the ball is one of the reasons. Edited September 21, 20232 yr by Bebe1980
September 22, 20232 yr So now a central defender is the main problem of our attacking issues? Some of you have completely lost the plot...just like our club at the moment🤣
September 22, 20232 yr Thx for the post above. People need to blame someone, so now we go after the old guys because old = slow right... and he even is the root of all problems tztz..

Not wishing to nitpick here but every team we lose against has to score against us for that to happen. In fact defensively we have been statistically better, although the quality of the opposition should be taken into account. Whilst i can see the points being made by various posters about slowing the tempo, often i think the delay and lack of forward pass can be due to a lack of movement off the ball by the forward players. I think there is too much focus on Silva atm, and in my opinion i am still yet to see any defensive player in this squad that is his equal. Should we be focusing on the perceived shortcomings of one defender when the most expensively assembled midfield in the league and our forward line are so toothless. Yes i would like to see a higher tempo in all areas and Silva is one of the few players with the vision and ability to ping accurate long passes around, but isnt the latest craze possession football and passing through the lines? Therefore shouldnt he just be giving it to the nearest creative midfielder that is in space? Hey i think there is much that can be improved in our play especially around our tempo and speed of movement off the ball and i think Silva owns this as much as anyone else, but i think targeting him for criticism when none of our forward or attacking midfield players seem to be able to receive the ball on the half turn other than Sterling currently and none seem to have an economy of touches in advanced positions, is kind of focussing on the wrong areas. If the front end was firing Chilwell, Colwill, Silva and Disasi wouldn't even be on the radar.
September 22, 20232 yr Some of the criticisms on him is overboard, I'd totally calling him out if we concede 2-3 goals, not when we are not scoring. If attackers could put chances away and we won those games, we would be praising him to have the composure of holding the ball and dictate the play from the back. Let's just call it as it is, we don't have a proper goal scoring striker ( for years), none of the wide attacking players are contributing goals, and midfield lacking the killer pass. Let's try to focus on the real issues and address them. Otherwise next time it will be dropping Sanchez, because he can't release a long goal kick to setup striker for a 1 on 1 with the opposition GK.

I think that is much the same message that Silva's trying to send out by standing there and waving his arms around: Why isn't anyone in the perfect position for me to make a killer pass to them? Of course the problem is, once Silva's finished making his protest... and someone's gone back to pick up the ball from him, the opposition are all nicely back in position and/or tight to our danger guys! And then it's even more difficult to play it out... I'm focusing on Silva because I don't see any of our other players doing what he does. The time for arm waving/protesting and sending messages to our forward or attacking midfielders is on the training ground. We've got a young dynamic team who are, IMHO, regularly being hamstrung by an older guy who would have been better suited to another team or slower league or the bench as a back up. Very likely a managerial instruction, otherwise Poch would be screaming on the sidelines to move the ball quicker. Most likely trying to initiate a press from the opposition so we can try to pass through the lines.
October 22, 20232 yr I'd be livid if I were Silva. Practically gave his life on the pitch last night only for Sanchez to f**king throw it away.

Interesting comment, as to me, Silva looks more frustrated these days than days gone by. I recall him smiling more, and his general demeanor seems a little aggravated these days. Probably for kid reason - he must think "these damn kids!". Played really well yesterday.
November 2, 20232 yr Just sign him up for one more season. I always thought "age is just a number" kinda silly, but Thiago has some years left in him. He's not like other players AND we need some experienced players in this team/squad, our youngsters need to know what a complete professional player looks like.
