Graham Potter (Now Sacked ) - *Official* New (Now Old) Chelsea Manager

Featured Replies

I also think that this week’s events was carefully thought out regarding the pros and cons of the consequences.

Hopefully Potter can impose his vision on the club.

Whilst he will have different challenges here (e.g. low block teams, pressure of results etc..) he has good players at his disposal, a very good academy and funds way better than Brighton would have.

He couldn’t turn down this job and I actually find it refreshing that we didn’t go for Zidane or someone of that calibre.

I truly think we have appointed GP with a long term project in mind.

If GP is here for the next few years then they would be changing the hire and fire culture at this club.

It probably looks bad now as this is the first manager they have got rid of, but maybe they think it was necessary to employ who they wanted.

People thought it was harsh to get rid of Rodgers at Liverpool, or removing Pellegrini for Pep at City.

Now they are distant memories.

Long term planning is important and maybe they couldn’t see themselves working with Tuchel long term so found it easier to cut ties now.

Now I’ve got my head around Tuchel leaving I’m actually looking forward to the future.

Carefully thought out ?

Unless Potter was involved in our recent transfer purges and acquisitions, some £250m+, i don't see how it was carefully thought out and planned.

If he was we'd be kicked out the football league.

Taking Brightons best player and giving them 2 players while consulting their manager would be the dodgy to say the league.

Careful, thought out and planned aren't words that can be applied to anything Boehly has done since he bought club.

Ok, that part is the most confusing part of all of this.

My point was I don’t think it was the knee jerk reaction some people think.

I think they had a vision of who they wanted to work with long term and clearly Tuchel wasn’t it.

I think they have had their reservations from before and in the end they thought that there was no good time to sack Tuchel, so Tuesday’s result and performance made more sense then after the West Ham victory for example.

It took them over a month to work out Tuchel was not a 'yes' man, but then it took them minutes to work out Potter is passive enough to replace him and sign him up for a £60m 5yr contract.

It's a bigger gamble than Roman was ever prepared to make for any manager.

It is a huge gamble.

That’s why I’m intrigued by this and just hope they have the courage to give Potter a fair amount of time to be successful.

I am not sure there is any hype regarding his nationality.  In fact probably the reverse as no English manager has ever won the EPL

I think you misunderstand what I mean. The hype on the job he is doing being great and talked up so much in media. I guess he is still one of the best brit managers at the moment in the league so all well and good to be tipped for the England manager position.

For the Chelsea job though, I dont think he has earned the stripes for it yet.

Can only be a long term project in mind with a 5 year contract on £12M a year. That's a huge investment in a manager unproven at our level.

Here is his managerial league record :

Interested to see how he copes with the huge step up to a big club ... suspect Boehly will not allow him to fail, and will do whatever it takes to make this a good decision.

Avram Grant, AVB, RDM, Frank Lampard ... all 4 of those were relatively inexperienced at top level before being offered the Chelsea job ...

None of them were given £12mill pa for 5 years +£20m pay off = £80m

AVB was on %100k p/w . $5m pa for 3 years.

He cost us £13m to pay off Porto, £5m for 12 months salary, and £10m to pay him off, total = £28m

Frank cost us £4 to pay off Derby, £100k p/w salary for 18 months and £2m to pay him off, total =£13-£14m

All a drop in the ocean for billionaires though. I doubt they have any idea what the cost of a pint of milk is LOL

Yes but my pointstands, we have gambled more on him than any other manager in our history, and he has won nothing, that is a huge gamble imo.

I think Todd and his team drew up a contract to tempt Pep away from city, but when they realised it was a no go, they just edited the contract they drew up for him, changed the name from Pep to Potter, but foolishly forgot to adjust the salary accordingly. 😁

He looked at Liverpools results and drew up the Contract for Klopp.

Then he saw the table saw Brighton were higher and decided Potter was the man to implement his 4-4-3 formation.

And Potter signed it there and then without even looking what’s in the contract before they could double check it.

You are probably right because it was the quickest announcement of a new manger we have ever had.

Financially yes, although comparing salaries in todays market to that of 10+ years ago is of course comparing apples and oranges.

Finances aside, if we are talking about taking a gamble on a manager with regards to potential success and popularity (or lack of it) then I would say replacing Jose Mourinho with Avram Grant is still top of the pile. Equally replacing RDM with Rafa Benitez is in the conversation (for different reasons).

But ultimately I agree, this is a massive, massive gamble. He has literally gone 'all in' on Potter and the only way this can be deemed a success is if he sticks with him through the bad patches that will of course occur.

The problem is, is that if Potter has a bad first season he has little to fall back on at this level. Any other world class manager you would have confidence in their ability to turn things around, but I am not sure anyone (players or fans) will have that for Potter. The question is will Todd when the chips are down?!

Have we ever seen a Chelsea manager in recent times turn things around once the slump started? I'm not sure I can think of an example
