Graham Potter (Now Sacked ) - *Official* New (Now Old) Chelsea Manager

Featured Replies

We’re going to look like right mugs if we end sacking him in a year or so. I wonder what assurances he was given. Todd and co could well be giving huge assurances but Roman soon caught on that managers only a certain lifespan.

It’s difficult to know whether he “elite” or not. I certainly put him down as a “good” manager. I hope he can make the step up.

Probably the best option in the circumstances

That is another factor. There really isn’t anyone else available or obvious.

As appointments go, I think no matter your personal opinion on Potter, this feels like a big departure from any previous managerial appointment.

We've had 20 years of "win now" appointments, managers with pedigree who have experience succeeding at the top level. (With the exception of RDM who was initially just an interim, and Frank who signed during a transfer ban).

Whether this actually means we're going to see a change in philosophy from the top down is the big question for me. I believe given time Potter can do well at Chelsea. I don't expect him to instantly fix this side though. I'd like to think the new ownership are appointing him knowing full well that this represents a long term commitment to a project, as if they were looking for a quick turnaround surely they'd have sought out someone like Pochettino first?

His initial interview(s) and the length of contract he's given (I've seen it rumoured he's been offered 5 years) are going to be really telling I think.

Why couldn't we build a long term project with Tuchel though? Do we sack Potter after the first bad patch as well? He hasn't won anything so really he'd get even less leeway than Tuchel

Interesting language used in the announcement:

Potter :

I am very excited to partner with Chelsea’s new ownership group and look forward to meeting and working with the exciting group of players and to develop a team and culture that our amazing fans can be proud of.

Behdad Eghbali and José E. Feliciano

We are thrilled to partner with Graham to build a winning team, one that embodies the culture of collaboration, innovation, teamwork, player development, and a commitment to excellence on and off the pitch. We are fortunate to have Graham and his team as our partners in that journey.’

Listen to latest London is blue-podcast. Matt Law explains how Tuchel was reluctant to work with the new owners. Their culture is a more modern corporation style where everyone is involved in planning. You can imagine it is a shock to people who worked under Roman who probably kept everything inside a small circle...Tuchel didn't want to work like that and it started his downfall.

he can't be classed as elite without winning big trophies. But he has potential to be an elite manager.

- he has great people management skills

- he is intelligent

- he seems to have a good system with regards to recruitment

- he plays attractive football while not having a top 10 side

- he has proven multiple times to be competitive in one of games against way bigger teams, not by solely defending but by playing in a brave opportunistic way

- he seems like a very calm and collective presence, the opposite of an extroverted egocentric type that can fall out with players

- he improves players

Here we go!!  This will have Fulham really fired up to go at us, but hopefully cooler heads prevail at Chelsea.

From all accounts it appears it was time to part with TT.  A massive thank you for all he did for the club and fans.

A new era, and welcome Graham.  I am excited by what you can bring to/out of our beloved club.  You have my full support!

Ironically the way Roman, Marina and co operated actually suited Tuchel and he may have stayed on longer. We'll never know how it would have played out if Roman was never forced to sell up. Results were troubling in recent times, but how much of that was contributed by the instability of the club in the past few months?

I always suspected it was going to be hard for Tuchel to stay on long term once Roman sold up. Stability was always the ideal aim, but clearly the new owners weren't happy with him and looked for any chance to move him on. It reminded me of Roman and Ranieri, where the new owner wasn't happy with the coach from day 1 and aspired to find someone else.

I think with the way the new owners want to operate, it became clear Tuchel's days were numbered. It just wasn't clear from the outside looking in how misaligned the two parties were before his departure.

Hopefully Potter and the board are aligned and crystal clear on their aims and objectives. If we're here in 18 months talking about another failed managerial appointment, then I'll know we've learnt nothing whatsoever.

The problem is that Tuchel’s bad patch in the league lasted over 30 games but some, including Lineker, think it was just a dip in form. Also Tuchel couldn’t motivate the players against teams like Brighton, Wolves, Leeds and Southampton or when we went behind. That wasn’t going to change.

Which pretty much means jack sh*t, let's be honest!

True, but interestingly no new manager was offered 5 years when Abramovich was running the show.

Certainly shows a desire of a longer term project from these owners. Whether it lasts the distance will leave us all sceptical at this stage.

After a massive injury crisis. If Liverpool though like us they would have sacked Klopp 2 seasons ago.

Pretty much confirms a lot of what was reported. Tuchel didn't want to take up a lot of the responsibility that came with the higher amount of control he was offered and that ultimately played a role in his sacking. I'm assuming Potter is willing to take up that responsibility which is why he came with his own transfer specialist.

Potter feels like Tuchel from Wish.

I genuinely feel like he'll set the team up the exact same way we'll just be far worse in the cups because he isn't tactically as astute and doesn't have the record of managing big players Tuchel had.

Not happy or optimistic about this appointment.

But every new manager deserves support.

So all the best Graham. You're going gl need it with these attacking options.

Agree with you. Best wishes to him but I don't see how it's not going to end up being a car crash of an appointment.

But why do it after spending £270m and the transfer window has shut with the season well under way ?  Surely if that was the problem they would of got rid of Tuchel a month ago?
