Very sad day

 

 

One of the worst part of getting older is that you know more people who sadly pass on. John was a very good midfielder who had a good engine and a good shot on him. Played over 450 times for us over two periods and a period of management that wasn’t the most successful though delivered some silverware. RIP John another of the 1970 team to sadly pass on.

Sad News. RIP.

 

One of those Chelsea players you were always aware of, Joining an epic kick about with some departed Chelsea legends 😞

Really sad news. Tremendous player and wonderful servant over many years. Always seemed younger than his years, as he looked after himself very well, so I am quite shocked.

RIP John - first Chelsea player I knew the name of when I started out in football fandom aged about 7 or so ...

I’m not old enough to remember him as a player, but he was the boss when I first started following Chelsea in the 80’s.

RIP sir, a true blue.

Steady player, scored "that " goal against the arse, loads of games, silverware as a manager. RIP to a true blue legend.

Sad news, RIP. Before my time as a player but he was manager during my formative years with the club, fondly remembered.

The break the net penalty against spurs in the league cup in 1971 had the bridge rocking. Also seemed a gent.

He was out long throw specialist until Hutch came along . It's hard to believe he's gone , always looked like a youngster even as he got older

Sad news to hear another one of our Chelsea family has left us. Not old enough to see him first time round but saw him during 83/84 until he passed the baton to Colin Lee.

All the boys spoke well of him at the recent event at the bridge. Met him a few times especially when he was working at the bridge looking after the corporate lot. He got the number 11 bus back to Victoria and would talk to those on the bus about the game and anything football.     R I P John

Got the impression he was one of the sensible, family men types of that team along with maybe Chopper, Bonetti, Houseman, in contrast to Ossie, Hudson, Baldwin, Hutch, Eddie Mac and a good few others who regularly got ratted on the Kings Road whilst wearing floral shirts. ( Generalisation)

Great servant, always smiling. I used to see his son Chris play tennis in Battersea Park- he was a great presenter- cheery demeanour like his old man- don’t see him on TV these days which is a shame
