Our main man is scoring when we need the goals. We have no one else. Danny's been out injured so Torres' done what he could, score goals to make us win these last 3 games. I take the positives. Looks like Rafa's done something or the boy's just been working extra hard. Anyway well done Torres.

The only thing the FSW has done is get the team to play a more direct style of football, which we know suits Torres.

This wasn't an option for Robbie, because we had to play like Barca or somewhere similar.

If we'd have been playing in the current style for the last 2 season I have little doubt that Torres would have a shedload of goals!

This is why I posted the question a couple of pages back, does Roman want Barca style football or Torres scoring, because they are exclusive deals, it's 1 or the other!

Pure speculation of course, but do you reckon Torres would be a flop at Barca?

I really don't buy into the whole "Roman made Rdm play barca style football" arguement. I think the players were just very confident and playing attractive football. I really don't see what has changed under rafa. Apart from moses instead of oscar.

theres only room for 1 target man in that team, and that 1 is messi.

I though the two previous Games Torres looked sharper, not sure if that was because Moses started instead of Oscar, but we didnt create loads for the striker because they were trying to play 5 at the back, and it didn't have the urgency and dynamism of a PL game (imho), but loving it that he is scoring none the less,

Oh look, the Emporer's not wearing clothes.

A distinctly average performance, like most of his performances since we signed him. As FSW would say............ fact! First touch iffy. Got so, so lucky for the goal.

Go Torres.

Lucky you're not bitter though eh?

I'm starting to wonder if Sturridge is even injured at all, or just protecting himself for his jan move.

Without bashing Torres as I'm happy he's scored a few but change things round a minute in your heads and imagine Cech was out for the same games as Torres has scored in...would young Ross be hailed as a great signing as we only conceded three in three?

Hes made a contribution with some Goals, my theiory is most decent strikers would have done the same in these last games and I'd include Sturridge, lets see if he can keep it up, at least hes building enough confidence to shoot so we'll have a better idea after hes taken this "form" into more difficult games.

So if we are basing his performances off of only playing "good sides", then we will have awhile until we can see the "real" Torres.

Corinthians next. Then Leeds. Then Villa. Then Norwich...AND then finally a good Everton side. We should not struggle against any of those squads up until the Everton match. I'll be expecting Torres to start all of them and at this rate I expect him to continue picking up goals as well as confidence. If it carries over into the Everton match it would be a huge boost.

No knock on Corinthians of course, they aren't to be taken lightly in a finals match but you would expect us to win.

Plus lets not forget that we play QPhaha to start the new year and there is nothing that would make me happier than a Torres hat-trick on them...

The "praise when its due" thing is what has annoyed me the most over the Torres saga. I didn`t like him, I didn`t want him when we signed him, but when he signed I hoped for the best while fearing the worst. When he plays sh*te I will say he`s been sh*te, when he plays well I will say he played well. The people that annoy are the ones who just cannot bring themselves to give him any praise what so ever and actively hunt for ways to belittle him no matter what he has done. He has scored against poor opposition of late, but he has played well in those games and you can only beat whats in front of you. For those 3 games he deserves praise, should he now go x amount of games against better opposition without scoring then he deserves stick. Pretty simple premise to work to really.

There it is, in black and white.

The complicating factor for some (and I dont blame them) is the arrival of FSW. This guys appearance seems bound up in the Torres question. While I still hate the decision to bring Benitez here, I dont for a second think Torres was in the owners ear trying to get a manager that would suit him (especially considering Torres had gone on two runs of good form under Robbie) so laying that on one player is a load of crap.

I'm not saying we should only base his performances against the better sides but it is something we need to see, if ignored all the games against what I'd count as top class opposition then Torres would have a decent record.

Until he does it as a matchwinner in important games against the best squads and on a reasonably regular basis, the doubts will be there.

And the credit where its due bit...I've given him my mom vote in two or three games and would gladly give it any time he looked like he deserved it, his goals of late are a good sign but nothing that makes me sit up and think hes what we need.

I think the question we have to ask ourselves is that if it was Chelsea instead of Man U last weekend during the derby, would Torres have scored a winner like RVP ended up doing against city. Obviously Torres is no FK specialist but its the question, can Torres put away a winner against a team we are competing against for the top spot in the table? He has yet to show that and I'll agree with you on that premise.

I'll echo what some have already said --- why are so many of you "extreme" on the Torres issue? Why must you love or hate him?

I lean a little towards the pro-Torres side, as opposed to the anti-Torres camp. I'm not going to make endless excuses for him, but I'm also not going to criticize everything he does (including the goals he scores).

When he gets involved in link-up play, passes well, works hard, etc., but doesn't score, it's: "screw the rest of that. He's a striker. If he's not scoring, he's worthless."

When he plays like today -- a goal, an assist, but MIA for much of the match -- it's: "who cares that he scored? The goal was lucky. And the opposition is poor. And his hair is stupid. And I don't like his choice of boots."

Here's what matters to me: He's a Chelsea player. And at the moment, he's our only striker. He has been playing better since Benitez came, and I hope it continues. I will continue to root for him every time he pulls on a Chelsea shirt. But, we still need another striker. Whether Torres stays or goes, we don't have enough quality or depth at the position. Hopefully Roman and Rafa address this in January. I'm one of the people who hopes Torres stays, but I hope it's in addition to a Falcao, Huntelaar, Cavani, etc.

As welcome as that would be, it isn't as simple as that for me. After all, he took the goal coolly against Barca in the Nou Camp. But then just moments before he had surrendered possesion way too easily and they had nearly scored. You had the two sides of Torres in the space of 120 seconds right there.

I really want to see two things;

1. Consistency - This really is the big one. Consistency is the key for any player who wants to be termed World Class. Not a fleeting run of 2 or 3 games, which we have all seen from him before, (and IMO are probably seeing now), where he plays half decently and notches a couple, generally against weaker opposition. I want to see a sustained run of form. 6,7,8 games against good and bad sides where he comes off the pitch everytime and is genuinely deserving of praise for his performance. He doesn't necessarily have to score, but he does have to be instrumental in every game. In his prime, this was Frank Lampard's major asset.

2. What I call the Drogba performance - This means Torres has to come off the pitch at the end of the 90 minutes and absolutely, positively, 100%, without fear of contradiction, must have been the....... MAIN MAN. He must have inspired those around him and single-handedly almost, been the difference between us winning and perhaps drawing or losing the game. This one, unfortunately, has to come against good opposition and, preferrably, in a big pressure game. Think Drogba against Napoli last season.

When, no, if, he does those two things I would be more than happy to join the 10to10, Redhatter, Ballack&Blu, Timetowaste "Torres is Brilliant Gang". I would even buy the bedroom poster.

I have been waiting for two years now perhaps that is why I am a tad impatient.

I really want you to be wrong, but deep down I know you're probably right.

I believe the motivation behind this thread is to provoke a reaction.

For example, some managers will put their arm around a player and empathise with them in order to get a reaction while others will tell them they're useless and put them on the bench before giving them another opportunity to prove themselves.

Much like this thread there are opinions supporting Torres and others losing patience but ultimately I think everyone wants him to do the business.

Show us what you're f*ck!ng made of and lets put this thread to bed!!!
