Or I could say that the sooner he's gone, the better, for his sake and for ours. Because this is getting f**king ridiculous now. Every other thread inexorably transforms itself into yet another round of Torres bashing, with the same old arguments, and with very little if any give and take on either side. The Torres haters hate the Torres defenders for not hating Torres; Torres' defenders hate the Torres haters for hating him.

Very well put, sir. Sums it all up regarding Torres for me. I really, really, really can't wait for him to leave.

Mind you, once he does, there'll probably another 100 page thread microanalytically dissecting why Torres failed at Chelsea and how he could have done better.

Surely by now everyone accepts its because Carlo picked him for that first game against Liverpool

I was reading twitter this morning and read a blog about Torres that was a great read. I will try and find it again later and put the link up on here.

Thanks for posting that. Really good piece and pretty accuarate IMO.

That's why I can't slate Torres as much as others do on here. It's not like he's playing sh*te on purpose. It's just really sad.

Pretty much.

The effort and will to do well is there but he's just not the same player he was when he first came to England. It's not his fault Chelsea paid £50 million for him or pay him silly wages, thats the clubs fault.

I don't ever remember Sheva getting the same kind of abuse despite being very poor when he came to the club, I think the whole FSW and RDM sacking has been unfairly lumped on Torres' shoulders because some fans don't know where else to aim their anger at so he is the easy target.

The Sheva and Torres signings were due to wishful thinking on Roman's part and not practical. Of course, there was a slim chance they would recapture their "glory days". I bet the selling clubs were ecstatic dealing with a buyer such as Roman. Both players were far from peak form and unlikely to reclaim it. Injuries had taken their toll yet Roman went ahead and splurged.

Medical incompetence and an obstinate attitude of a gullible buyer with deep pockets have come back to haunt Roman.

Sometimes it is, sometimes it isn't.

No unique perspective on the situation from that blog IMO. Torres is no different to any other player who relies on pace as their major asset. Pace doesn't last forever. Once it's gone it isn't coming back but, if you're good enough, you adapt your game to suit and develop other strengths. Ala' Kerry Dixon after he tore his stomach muscles. I can't understand why Torres isn't able to do likewise given that he isn't exactly a weedy 5'7" 10 stone specimen.

Roman is the bloke who needs to read and digest that blog. He personally made two huge marquee signings, Torres and Sheva, both players who relied heavily on pace, and with both there were strong indicators before he brought them that they were on the slide. And I say that as someone who rates Sheva in his prime in my top ten forwards of all-time.

I actually think Torres has tried to adapt his game, unfortunately for all concerned he has failed!

Yeah he's tried to adapt by becoming better at linking play, which is why he drifts out wide so often. Unfortunately his touch isn't good enough - at one time his burst of pace would mask the poor touch, but he no longer has it.

I've steered clear of this thread recently as it's been a bit silly recently but came to post that article, actually.

What strikes me about the highlights video is how many goals "mid-video Torres" scored without using his pace - I guess his low confidence has seriously hampered his finishing, and defenders are no longer afraid of his pace so don't give him the space he had before.

What a shame. I think Fernando Torres the footballer is sh*t, but I like Fernando Torres the man, and I really do feel for him.

Torres was Ancelottis signing just as much as it was Roman`s. Carlo wanted him bad, and Wilkins confirmed it on SkySports a year or so ago. He is up there with the biggest flops in football-history though when taking price in account. Probably stuck with him for the next Three years aswell as so sane club would touch those wages.

How we could go into this season with Sturridge(never got a chance) and Torres as our strikers is still beyond me. No wonder we bombed in the CL and won`t challenge for the title.

Correction: Torres is the single greatest flop in football history.

To think how excited we all were at the time, even though the red flags had been there for all to see for at least a season.

Its a fascinating read. And you really can see the truth in what he says when watching the those videos.

Ill admit to being hard on Torres. Mainly thats out of frustration with his form, and his continual prescence in the team with so little to show for it - but then after all, Torres doesnt keep picking himself - whoever is in charge does.

What does annoy me though is his demeanor and at times his attitude. Im sick of the throwing the hands in the air at teamates and the look of 'who me?' when his number (finally!) comes up. How many times has he stormed off the pitch seething ? (i remember a few occasions with RDM) , normally after a pitiful showing.

Furthermore some of his comments away from Chelsea havent been particulary endearing and certainly i felt what his said after the Champions League Final was practically unforgivable.

Its over. And the sooner the club realise it the better. A sad chapter all round.

Good article. I've always thought of Torres as an average player even at Liverpool during his prime and this article explains reasonably well why. He's not really good at anything other than having a pit of pace and decent movement outside the box, both of these qualities have indeed left him and he's just not good enough for the premier league anymore. Especially for a club at our level.

I think the throwing of his arms in the air, and the 'who me' looks are really evidence of his own frustrations at not being able to do what he once could.

I've said it before, but he must be as gutted that this hasn't worked out for him as we are.

I dont think so, quite often it happens when he isnt given the ball exactly where he wants it. Ive seen him glare at players for not providing an inch perfect pass.

It annoys me because more often than not he isnt where he should be.

I'm not defending him, it is just my thoughts on the matter, he can't produce what he once could and I think it frustrates the hell out of him.

I also believe he knows what runs he should be making, but his confidence is so low he's scared of making those runs.

If he made the right run, maybe the ball would be perfect?

When he first came to us he was making runs but not getting picked out, because we were not set up to play that way, since we've been more set up for his style, he stopped making the runs!

look at any other player, except for some ridiculously humble ones like ramires, everybody does that.

What a shame. I think Fernando Torres the footballer is sh*t, but I like Fernando Torres the man, and I really do feel for him.

This.

I am, and will forever be, a Fernando Torres fan. And it's precisely because he DOES still try hard, he HAS tried to adapt his game to account for the lost pace.

Yes, I know, some on here like to say he's a pouting cry baby. I couldn't disagree more. I think he tells the truth. And from an athlete, that's sort of refreshing. A guy with his track record -- the medals, the period of time being one of the best strikers in the world, etc. -- SHOULD want to play all the time. He should want to be involved with everything. And as I and others have said several times, if he really was a whiny cancer in the dressing room (as some on here proclaim), his teammates wouldn't mob him every time he scores. Yet they do. So he must be a better teammate than a lot of people think.

Now, back to Torres the player. His pace isn't there. And that article is precisely right -- even in his early Liverpool days, his first touch wasn't great. It didn't need to be. He could poke the ball somewhere past the defender and then turn on the jets and beat him to it. He obviously can't anymore. But I commend him for TRYING to change his game. He's worked on improving his link up play. He's become a very good passer/crosser of the ball, and is unselfish (to a fault, too often).

I wish his killer instinct and confidence would come back, but you can understand how a man stripped of his most valuable physical tool would start to second guess himself.

So what do we do now? I don't know. He can't be option A in every game anymore; that much is clear, and has been for awhile. He's pretty expensive as an option B. Though, to be fair to him, he's on pace for what....30 goals this season in all competitions? That's nothing to sneeze at. So either he gets sold (probably back to Spain) in the summer, or he accepts a rotation policy. He's never going to score enough to justify his price tag, but for me, that doesn't make me like him, respect him, or cheer for him any less.

The hearbreaking thing for him to realise is he is still only 28, that must be a terrible thing to know, that he is in his prime, but finished, as the Torres flier, he might sink into a hole if real depression, don't like to that, he isn't personally a bad guy, is he?

No I don't believe he is. Everything known about his off-field life points towards him being quiet and shy, a family man who genuinely loves his wife and children. This makes it even more difficult to stomach the amount of hatred directed towards Torres. Not disappointment or frustration at his on-field deficiencies, but outright hatred and hostility.

"You're sh*t and I hate you because you're sh*t" - is that how it works?

I don't think any of us 'hate' Torres. We want him to perform as much as anybody. It's frustrating at times. Very frustrating, but I just feel it's time he moved on. No hard feelings. It's not his fault he's had a bad injury. He tries hard. He's under an enormous amount of pressure.
