I'm pretty suprised how many people have slated Torres recently, it was pretty obvious in 2012 he wasn't returning to his best EVER. No matter if he scored 10 goals in a row or not. Fact is, he's lost it compared to his Liverpool days.

You really can't say that he doesn't score important goals though. Today is a prime example, the EUROPA League final and how about the CL Semi?

I do think he should be played more as a AM assisting your strikers once Mourinho is brought in, he clearly still has a lot more to offer... maybe not masses ammounts of goals but can still score when it matters.

£50 million was spent I'm sure to alight the Premier League, but I think he's done his prime job to win you guys the Champions League (with a bit of help from Drogba of course).

Torres never is and never was a £50 million striker, but the winner today and against Benfica - two excellent finishes incidentally - last Wednesday have gone a long way towards some fond of redemption. If today was to be his last game for the club, then at least it can be said that Torres left on a high.

Well done Fernando a fine way to end the season by being a major reason we are third and EL champions.

Are you having a laugh? A 'little bit of help from Drogba'?

Torres' goal at the Nou Camp, whilst great, did not alter the result of the match. We were going through beforehand, it sealed the result, yes, but he did not single handedly win us the match by any means. The defenders took care of that. (and by defenders, of course, I mean the ten on the pitch who put in a defensive master-class, whether they were nominally defenders or not!)

So, in summation, good goal? Yes. Important goal? Somewhat.

Drogba, on the other hand, equalising goal in a European Cup final, winning penalty in the subsequent shootout, whilst he didn't quite single handedly win us the Champions League, he certainly did a hell of a lot more than Torres.

It would be an insult to even say that he did it with 'a little bit of help from Torres', who was more or less persona non grata at the time and slated the club in the aftermath of the match.

Wouldn't it be nice if some of those who have given him dogs abuse, swallowed a bit of humbke pie and came into this thread to acknowledge his contribution this week?

I'm not talking about 'damning with faint praise' either.

Edit: well done Onebelo

I think he'll go in the Summer, if he isn't first choice he will be really ineffective

I actually think he has grown up a lot this year especially from his recent interviews about the future and saying things like Chelsea need to bring in quality players in every position. I have the feeling when he was signed the people in charge made him stupid promises about being some sort of untouchable player and his ego was inflated. Hopefully he has now come back down to earth and realised its a team game.

I think it's best if he leaves after this season as he's done more good than not for the first time with us and it can end of good terms but if he does stay then I'd hope he is set for being a squad player because that's what he will have to be and Jose don't take any sh*t from players as we know.

I expect Lukaku to come back as Jose will see the raw talent that he saw in one man named Drogba and with Schurrle and possibly another striker including Ba that's a good number to work with.

Of course we will never get the truth worth that we all expected from Torres but that's the risk our club seems to always take but his efforts this season have more often than not been there even if the talent has not.

I'd just love this thread to turn into an archive one once and for all

:D

We need someone truly world class up top.

why do you think so? do you think we had too much trouble scoring this season?

Well done to him today. He scored the winning goal for us (for the first time?) against a side in the top half. If we get any decent offers for him now, we really should let him go, both for the club's sake and his own.

Thank you Fernando for the goal at the Nou Camp and for the goal in the Europa league final.

But it's time to move on now. ;-)

But look where we've finished in the league had we had a Van Persie up top I bet we'd have been celebrating the league title

I doubt it.

Scoring hasn't been the problem it's been at the back mainly

He was instrumental in our Europa League success and I will always be grateful for that. Scoring 1 league goal in 2013 however; that is unacceptable. He has had a fantastic week. But like Onebelo said, time to move onto better things. Personally I think the better thing is already at the club and has just scored a hat-trick against Man U.

With firepower like Hazard, Mata, Oscar, Moses, Lamps, Torres, Ba, Lukaku and more likely than not Schurrle then goals IMO will not be hard to come by especially if Jose is in charge with the systems he puts in place.

I'm not sure we will spend another 50 million on a Falcao or Cavanni and tbh we really shouldn't have to anymore

I doubt it.

I disagree in some ways yes defence but there's Ben so many games where a world class striker would have made the difference
