The John Obi Mikel Goal Scoring Thread

Featured Replies

second highest scorer in 2014 now? cant see our current strikers putting too much pressure on him. What does Jose feed him to make him score. never done it for any other chelsea manager, but 4 for jose!

He's allowed to go up at set pieces

He's allowed to go up at set pieces

This and from what I've seen this season is an increased tendency to shoot from range and play on the outskirts of the penalty area. Defo allowed much more adventure and freedom this season.

I found this quote from Barbara on TalkChelsea

It was a landmark day for John Mikel Obi, in many respects…
'I never recognise his ability to score goals!' the Portuguese laughed.

'I recognise his ability to play as an anchorman, to play that position in a very comfortable way, with no mistakes. He reads the game well, plays in an intelligent and safe way, but I never recognise his goalscoring appetite.

'There was a smile on my face [when he scored]. For some reason Essien gave him the armband, normally it should go to Ashley Cole, so maybe it made him believe he was a goalscorer!

Marvellous performance I thought, kept Will Hughes quiet and ultimately put us in front. He was solid at the back and excellent in possession. I also loved that the first thing he did upon getting the armband was sprint back and put in a last-ditch tackle on someone in the box.

Finally we can stop worrying about who is going to lead our team when JT retires...

Thought he played really well yesterday. As usual though his performances never get any credit in the media.

Who cares about the media when he is not even appreciated by Chelsea fans...as Zola said.

Sure but i feel the media have a big influence on peoples opinions, him getitng more deserve praise from pundits etc would make some fans change there opinion.

From Four Four Two

Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel

believes Jose Mourinho's win-at-all-cost

mentality is beginning to rub off on the

club's star players.

Mourinho's return to Stamford Bridge initially got

off to a stuttering start, but Chelsea have gained

fluency in recent weeks, winning four of their last

five Premier League games to leave them third in

the table, just two points off table-toppers

Arsenal.

Eden Hazard, Oscar and Willian have excelled as

a creative triumvirate in recent weeks, leaving

two-time Chelsea player of the year Juan Mata

scrapping for minutes.

Mourinho has previously claimed the Spaniard

needs to be able to work more for the team in

order to get a run in his XI, although Mikel

believes others have shown a greater aptitude for

it.

"He (Mourinho) always wants us to play in a

certain way and give 110 per cent," said Mikel.

"If you don't, you're out.

"You don't want to slack, you don't want to sit

down and think, 'You're the best, I don't want to

defend or I don't want to run'. If you don't do

those things, you don't play.

"That's the mentality he wants installed in this

team and slowly but surely the likes of Eden,

Oscar and Willian are beginning to do that.

"What the Premier League and Champions

League means to this club. If you don't play for

Chelsea, you don't know what these trophies

mean to us.

"It's not a team where if you come second, third

or fourth, it doesn't matter. No - every year you

have to win something and this is the pressure.

"Now they're here, they have to feel the pressure

and they are feeling it right now. That's why we

just want to keep doing well and now they're

starting to understand that we don't want to get

beaten."

No, the populist opinions of media pundits are hardly going to change the hard evidence that Mikel is a good but very limited player.

Makelele was limited aswell and he got all the praise in the world.Of course not saying Mikel is as good as Makelele but he deserves more praise from the media in my opinion.

Once upon a time, empty promises about self-inflicted forfeits would be uttered to mates in a pub, it was generally beery bravado and meant nothing. It was forgotten.

Now, promises are made on public forums, leaving the promiser under a huge weight of expectation.

Which brings us to Lee Mitchell, a Chelsea fan who now sports John Obi Mikel’s name on his backside.

A tweet he probably thought safe enough before  the Derby game in the third round of the FA Cup read: ‘If Mikel scores today I’ll get his name or the Chelsea badge tattooed on my ass.’

The not-exactly-prolific Mikel opened the scoring and poor old Lee has his name forevermore on his bum.

Not sure why he didn’t go for the badge but at least he made good on his promise.

"Following through" is an unfortunate expression to use in relation to this part of the anatomy!

I wondered if anyone would pick up on that and as ever Moi you do not disappoint.

Bless you, ForeverCarefree - I aim to please!  Either that, or I'm sadly predictable!

He is probably the only limited player to win all the top honours that he could in English football,

Premier League (2009-10)

FA Cup x 4 (2007, 09, 10, 12)

League Cup (2007)

Champions League (2012)

Europa League (2013)

Not too shabby collection for a limited footballer.

kalou can match that, apart from the europa league (a final mikel sat on the bench for the entirety of).

and kalou was absolutely sh*t, never mind limited.

phil neville has 6 premier league trophies, 3 fa cups and a champions league. he was sh*t too. wes brown has 5 league titles, 2 fa cups, 4 league cups and 2 champions leagues. also sh*t.

paulo ferreira was the definition of a "good, but limited player" (what sydney blue actually said...something which i take to mean being solid but unexceptional, doing a job without being outstanding; and you have taken to mean "dur dur dur someone sed a bad things about miceal...mbh angrys...stats i must has stats") : 2 champions leagues, 2 uefa cups/europa leagues, 3 premier league titles, 4 fa cups, 2 league cups. that pisses on mikel. so there.  :good2:
