Ruben Loftus-Cheek

Chaps we focus on RLC yet Rose wasn't the best for the goal, Dier wasn't closing down shooters from the edge of the box and Alexander-Arnold's set pieces were poor. Possibly RLC was trying to hard, his first touch at times seemed to indicate nerves.

I'm one of those saying give him another year on loan before deciding if he is Chelsea 1st team material.

So want RLC to come through and be an important player for us but he never seems to get out of second gear.

It is still early days for him- especially at International level, but it won't be long before he won't have that excuse any more and he's got to start showing a bit more. On the strength of last night, I don't expect he'll get too many more starts in this World Cup.

Writing him off because of last nights game is ridiculous.

Writing off any player over a few world cup appearances is ridiculous. Why not judge a player over a season rather than 2 or 3 appearances in a competition that takes place every 4 years?

No kidding! Numerous times in the first 45 especially where he was in ACRES of space asking for the ball and it never came. Several good runs forward with no movement in front of him. Our supporters expectations of him are such a joke.

FFS, NO-ONE is writing him off on the basis of one or even a few performances.

What a few of us our pointing out is that he does okay but no more than that. I never watch RLC play and think "Wow, this is exactly what we have been missing". He always seems to play well within himself and at some point he has to actually live up to the hype. And I hope he does.

Usually solid rather than spectacular.

Nothing wrong with that but you watch him wanting him to do something to light up the game, occassionally he'll drift past someone impressively but then it's followed up with a safe ball sideways.

I want to see him show a bit of vision, threading in some through balls, having a decent shot on goal. It's all a bit safe and he's not showing enough at the moment to really impress.

As my User name suggests i have a lot of love for this supreme Teutonic footballer, the amount of headed goals he scored should be a clue for the impressively built RLC, plus Ballck didn't get his first German Cap till he was 23, 98/42 a mighty impressive goals to games ratio for a midfielder, RLC has the tools, but needs to stamp his mark over club and country

I'm with you Nibs. For us (on the rare occasion) for Palace and for England he shows glimpses of talent but most often on all three stages looks languid. When he does have a burst of energy I don't think his end product is anywhere near up to scratch yet either. Not writing him off but still waiting to see some real upward curve in his performances.

Having said that, I'd play him ahead of Bakayoko, Drinkwater and Barkley but, maybe he wouldn't get past Charlie Adam who is my bet for this seasons midfield signing.

Because he is pmsl.
That is so obvious to you that you are pissing yourself laughing? Mount showed some very promising stuff on loan. And while I don't think many on here would argue that mount is better at this time, I do feel he might end up being the better player.

He actually had an opportunity to score a headed goal last night, ballsed that up too.

Nibs - I agree. Though I did see one game, where he really was lighting up and dominating in a U-21's game against Denmark. He bossed the field where power, pace and intelligence. So joyful to watch. I really rate RLC.
I truly believe that he has the potential to become world class. He sort of reminds me of players like Milinkovic-Savic and Pogba - however, he will need to take the next step soon.

The problem is, as chelsea fans we are hyper-analysing RLC. Some are massively over-critical, and some under-critical. I've been trying to watch him fairly neutrally, which is hard because I want him to do well.

He has the athleticism and the ability to drive through the midfield pretty much at will, he shields the ball very well, his passing is usually good, links up well with teammates.

I'd like to see him be a bit more selfish and start shooting more, but he may just be the type of player who doesn't get many goals.

The main aspects where he tends to get criticised are workrate. It's hard watching him because I want him to be involved in everything, to get assists and goals, when we go forward, to get in blocks and tackles when we're defending, and its just not realistic to expect a player to be involved in everything. It can be frustrating when we're on a quick attack and you want RLC to be up there with them and he's not, but I've been watching him carefully and I think it's because he's quite a sensible player. When another player bursts ahead of him and leaves his position, RLC will drop back and fill  If Dier finds himself further up the field, RLC will fill into DM. If Arnold goes on a lung-busting run up the win, RLC will drop back a bit and cover that position. So while it would be great to see him getting involved in everything, it's more intelligent/sensible to do what he does.

I think we really need to stop over-analysing him though. Just let the manager come in, give him a chance and see what happens. He can't put in worse performances than Bakayoko did last season, that's for sure.

The thing is he's 22 now, not some promising 17 year old. When given a chance like he had last night he should have at least worked his ass off to show how much he wanted it. He makes Matt Le Tissier look like a fired up grafter.

I was replying to someone suggesting exactly this. He showed promising stuff in Holland, i'll wait til he does it in the prem or for England's mens team.

It was a pretty naff display from England, I don't think anyone played well enough to suggest they're pushing to replace those who played in the first two games.

RLC tried a couple of things, made a few runs from deep which I guess is more than could be said for those around him.

Didn't think he stood out tbh. Drew some foul but that was about it.

Another so so performance

He was probably the best of the midfielders last night. Delph looked sloppy in possession and Dier was almost anonymous, I feel like he's regressed this season.

RLC wasn't great but I suppose he didn't really do anything wrong either, I'd like to see him be able to get more time on the ball centrally rather than mostly on that right hand side.

Yeah but that's Delph and Dier who for me anyway are pretty limited themselves. The Midfield was pretty average in all honesty.

If I was looking in with no affiliation to RLC I wouldn't particularly think he was anything to shout about. I find myself picking out things which are pretty normal for a top flight footballer to do like drive past players and draw some FK's.

I don't know but I just don't see the hype with him really, he is a big powerful lad but seems to be holding back but maybe that's just how he will be.

I think the same. When Loftus-Cheek is on the ball, i can see there is an explosive side to his game waiting to get out, but it seems to me like he holds himself back and plays it safe. There were a few of these moments last night for England. This may just be something he will improve on with more experience, or it could just be part of his game, we'll just have to wait and see.
