Easy to forget he was impressive in Conte's title winning season and deserves credit for being a part of that success, but he's not good enough anymore.

When you’re hot your hot, when you’re not you’re not. Alonso is NOT right now and it’s unfortunate. He was a major asset in our title winning season. The new system just doesn’t suit him.

Meh, Tom Cleverly got a premier league winners medal but eventually you get found out. Alonso now has.

Everyone makes mistake but not many make as many as Alonso.

I'm starting to think he wants to get away. Remember last summer (or end of last season, can't remember) he spoke about it being good to play for Barcelona (I think it was) etc. I think there's a few players who want out when the going gets tough and if they want that, then let them go. 

 

He was good a few years ago, but hes definitely past it now. The odd good performance here and there coupled with a few good set pieces doesnt negate the fact that over the course of a whole season he is pretty poor.

He is only 28 so I'm not sure that past it is the correct assessment. He just doesn't fit into this system at all and is clearly not comfortable in the role he is being asked to play. For that reason, assuming we continue with this system, he should no longer be first choice.

He needs to be dropped after yesterdays horror show. Screw the rotation and give Emerson 5-6 PL games straight to see what he can do. Alonso should be relegated to domestic cup games. 

Heck, after yesteday, I would even call up an academy player to play the domestic cup games. (Juan Castillo?) Can’t be much worse considering the state of our LB position

If Emerson doesn’t take his chance, get rid of both in the summer.

Yeah i agree. Just too many. But i still think he is good enough to be in the squad in the future. 

Doesn`t help that lately, nobody of the players get on with Sarri's system. 

Interested to see if he's back in the squad tonight after being left behind for the Malmo game. 

i imagine he'll start. Think he'll get killed by Rashford but he's had the rest to start.

I heard rumours of a fall out with sarri, I guess we will see of theres any substance to them tonight. I know emerson has been a bit hit and miss himself, but I don't think you should Alonso should be getting picked when he is making mistakes over and over again. Maybe emerson might find some consistency with a run of games.

I don't think it would be too difficult to sell him, or to even make a profit.  We bought him for something like 24m, 3 years ago.  I think we could easily recoup that.  The extension he signed helps us in that regard, considering he won't be able to pull a snake move like Courtois did with a year left on his deal.

Who'd want him though? If us football fans can see how limited he is in a back 4 football scouts will be able too. What big teams play with wing backs?

It's a fair question, but I think we could find a few takers.  Maybe not one of the big teams, I will concede that.  I could see him going back to Italy or maybe Spain.

I would say wait until Conte finds another job and hope he bids for him but even he wanted an upgrade on him lol

Conte wanted Alex Sandro to replace him, doubt he'd go for Alonso again.

They've got Reguilon already displacing Marcelo, and Theo Hernandez out on loan, so I don't think they would be suitors.

Beggars belief someone decided to give him a 5year contract. We really really need to get a director of football in who actually knows football. f**kin joke.

In this system? no, he's not. I remember at the start of the season most fans saying they would be worried about seeing Alonso playing in a back 4 in more open team, and you can see why.
