February 16, 20215 yr I think Lampard was justified in doing what he did considering Alonso's behaviour after that game. Alonso just can't perform in a back 4. As soon as we revert back too it we'll have the same problems with him again there.
February 16, 20215 yr Good game from him, plays out under pressure and his aerial ability is so important for defending as for linking up with the forwards. He just knows how to play this position. Was Lampard right to banish him? Maybe yes but it cost him for staying in this rigid 4-3-3 where a change could have helped in a few matches.
February 16, 20215 yr Alonso at LWB is a completely different beast, even his defensive work is good because he could just get tight on the attacker, knowing he has defender behind him if he misses the tackle. It certainly adds a dilemma for Tuchel, Alonso is the specialist LWB, but Chiwell is a probably a better all around left side player.
February 16, 20215 yr Some weird revising of history here, Alonso was dropped by Lampard because he was rubbish for quite a few matches, then when he was subbed had a baby strop and sat on the bus like a child. Hes a liability as a left back in a back 4, and thats what we were playing. Same as Chilwell isnt great as a wing back, and thats why hes not being played. Or is Tuchel not playing Chilwell because of his pride?
February 16, 20215 yr For me Alonso is dreadful and a liability defensively. Even going forward from wing back he's very limited because he has no pace and the opposing defender knows that he's not going to try the outside, unless of course the defender is a hedgehog. I appreciate and respect TT for giving him opportunities but Chilwell is a far better option even given his recent poor form.

Or is Tuchel not playing Chilwell because of his pride? Absolutely spot on. Alonso didn't suit Lampard's football but does suit Tuchel's. I think he's largely been a good if limited servant. Much like Willian with Conte I won't forgive the stroppiness against Lampard but he can do a job for us in this system. That said the worst bit is that Chilwell cost us 60m. We bought him for Lampard and now he's on the bench, he might get another run he might not. The waste involved in our manager turnover staggers me sometimes.
February 16, 20215 yr I think we'll play a mix of formations going forwards, and I see Chilwell as first choice for when we play a flat back 4 (enabling the extra attacker, which will be advantageous in many games), and then Alonso plays as first choice if we are playing with 3 centre backs. Nice problem for TT to have anyway, and allows for some flexibility of formation, which is a good thing!

Or is Tuchel not playing Chilwell because of his pride? Revising? Everybody knows Back3 = Alonso and Back4 = Chilwell and Backbench = Emerson. If i read one more time he is sh*t in a back four i roll my eyes 360. Everyone so hung up with Alonso like he killed a person or something. I think it will mostly be a back three till the end of season as Tuchel pointed out "why change for the sake of changing" he can mix it up everybody knows this, and sorry for all Chillwell fans, yes he cost 50mil but i dont care if he cries in the bus for not playing as for Ziyech and others. Don´t get me wrong i would like all of them to play well and be a success for the team but a price tag is not a good reason to start someone over others. 😉okayy
February 21, 20215 yr A couple of papers today reporting that Alonso is fishing for a new contract, please god no!

February 21, 20215 yr The speed of a tank and the turning circle to match. Least he offers something offensively right? Like making Saints defenders look class...
February 21, 20215 yr It's rumoured that he wants a 1 year bumper deal at his current big £150k rate. I don't think there is any pressure to do it as we still have him for 1.5 years and he probably has little resale value anyway. I don't think Tuchel's long term plans is to continue with 3-4-3, he'll probably shift players on and make his own team at some point and part of that is to move Alonso on.

Please no, this squad is full of overrated bums of which he is commander and chief.

If he’s only got 1.5 years left, TT will probably be gone by then, successful or not, so he can go on a free.
February 22, 20215 yr No reason to keep Alonso for longer than what's on his contract. His performance against Southampton is exactly why so many people dislike him, and we didn't even get to see his defensive limitations. But the sad part is, he's still a better option on the wingback than Chilwell is. That really depresses me.

Agreed he's been for the most part a good servant and won 3 titles with us but age is catching up to him and in the position he plays losing a yard of pace every season is detrimental. We should at some point revert back to a back 4 and Chilly b can go back to what he does best.

They are very different roles. He may well prove to be a great wing back but he would need to time to adapt to that new role. Alonso has always looked better as a wing back than he does as a regular LB where he is a disaster. CHO has been playing Right Wing back very effectively but I doubt any of us would want to see him playing as a regular Right back beyond emergencies. By the same logic I am not sure why we would just expect a Left Back to become a good Wing back overnight. The ultimate problem here with Chilwell is that he was signed for a manager who is no longer with the club. Assuming Tuchel continues with wing backs then either Chilwell has to adapt to a new role, or he will become another expensive reserve.

I wonder if TT does not deliver top 4, especially as he added pressure by getting us in the top 4 within 6 games, if he will be gone in the summer. I would not put it beyond Roman.

Top 4 isn’t as easy for us as it once was, the continued sacking of managers has come home to roost and we have a squad full of other managers players. I don’t see us getting top 4 this year, and no guarantee next year either. I think our chances of sustained success went out of the window with Conte, we had a squad suited to his style and yet again failed to build on it. We then replaced a top manager with a flavour of the month (reminds me of the AVB disaster) If Roman and the board had some football knowledge then we could be right up their with the elite, unfortunately he’s short sighted and we’re slipping further away from those top teams.

Conte did well with what he had. However even that side for me paled compared to us at our best. Virtually all of those Jose and Carlo sides were such leaders and characters.

Yet again Roman didn’t realise you needed to keep investing.

Chilwell was underperforming long before Tuchel came in lets be honest here. His performances took a turn in December and he's been quite average since then, very frustrating going forward especially. The one thing I like about Alonso, is that his link up play is much better, despite his obvious limitations. Chilwell is like Emerson going forward, offers hardly anything.

Chilwell is decent goign forward just a bit inconsistent for us so far. Apart from scoring a goal Alonso has done very little to make me think he deserves to be the starting LWB for the next games. Maybe, but besides the first two months he was here, what has he done going forward? I can hardly even remember him putting in a cross. He gets the ball, cuts inside, ignores his winger, then passes to a midfielder, rinse, repeat. He has more pace than James, yet James is making far more crosses and getting into better positions. Same with Alonso.

This is coming from a person who defend and shower praise on Alonso.
