Olivier Giroud to Chelsea

Featured Replies

I really really really hate that he's come here at the expense of Michy, a player who I rate and like. But I do think Giroud is a good signing, age isn't a massive factor in this one, we'll easily get 2 seasons out of him at least if we want to that is. He's a good striker, but having said that I would have preferred giving Michy the chances to prove himself, but we all know that wasn't going to happen.

He's either not good enough or not ready, time will tell.

But he's ready for Dortmund? I understand that managers in Conte's calibre are mostly right, but they're also sometimes wrong and Conte could be very wrong on the Michy situation. I don't like the idea that if a player performs well elsewhere it's just because he automatically became a good player, sometimes managers make big mistakes, I think Jose made two big ones despite how swimmingly things were going at the time. The long-term needs more thought than the short-term.

I don't think it's a question of readiness but of style. Dortmund have in my view favoured players who have great finishing capability rather than those with superb all round games. They have relied on those deeper to control and create and players higher to finish. PEA, Lewandowski and even back to Lucas Barrios. I've attached a couple of 11tegen11's passmaps to demonstrate. PEA is very isolated and has few touches but he scored twice in both games. We expect our strikers to be a focal point to receive long passes and play others in to assist to transition from front to back. That is why we are signing Giroud.

Well if you're giving it back anyway you might as well give it to me....

This exchange made me laugh so much

First interview on the website today:

"The most important was talking with the coach, Antonio Conte. I felt like he really wanted me and he really wanted to work with me".

With all the speculative comments about Giroud being a board signing and not a Conte one, do his comments surprise anyone? I was told Conte had nothing to do with transfers at all so it is interesting Giroud had this to say.

It might just be Conte being professional, yet its good to hear Giroud say that. Hope he plays against Watford.

You would like to think he wasn't just lieing through his teeth?

Something doesn't add up to me, either Conte had a big influence on this transfer as he says, or Giroud is just outright lieing. Any guesses anyone?

What I mean is perhaps Conte wanted Dzeko not Giroud. Yet once the deal is done Conte knows as a professional it is important to welcome the player and make him feel wanted.

That way he is likely to play his best for you.

Suggested song for Giroud:

Giroud, Giroud, Oliv.i..er  Giroud

Giroud, Giroud Oliv..i..er Giroud

Sang to the tune La Marsellais like ‘ Marchon, marchon…’

I hope we have a warrant to chant this..

Giroud, Giroud,

Oliv.i..er  Giroud

When he gets the ball he's sure to score.

Oliv.i..er  Giroud

We all know it'll be:

GIROUD! GIROUD! GIROUD!

As per tradition of just repeating the player's name.

Perhaps Conte is happy with his 2nd or 3rd choice Giroud given how much his first preference, Dzeko, seemed to be dragging his feet.

This all doesn't add up to me. It's pretty clear Conte wasn't satisfied with Bats and he wanted a certain kind of striker. The club delivered. Maybe it wasn't his first choice but the club cant MAKE players sign. I take Conte's words at fave value, he isn't in control of signing players but they ask him. It's not a problem.

The Crouch/Carroll stuff was clearly nonsense, how else do you start with them and end up spending 18m on Giroud as a 4th choice? Especially if the club aren't planning to keep Conte.

I'm convinced Conte hands the board a list of players he wants, options are explored and players are signed accordingly. Every so often the club do make a signing on their own, Barkley for example but he represents a great potential investment that Conte probably isn't too fussed about.

Giroud

You were poo

But now you're blue

We think you're kewl

Woo, wooo

Haven't read all replies here but Giroud said that Conte was his main reason for choosing Chelsea. I'll miss Michy but hopefully he'll develop and in the meantime in Giroud we have a proven scorer who will strengthen our squad.
