February 26, 20206 yr Cmon....... how are we going to top 2012 at the Allianz Arena without overturning a deficit of 3 or more? All part of the plan...... On a serious note I'm hoping the result has firmly put some people back into reality. Seems somewhere between the beginning of the season til now we went from hoping to finish in the top 4 and make it to the knock out rounds but just glad if we integrate some youth into the team, that would be swell, to if we don't get that at a minimum it would be a disaster. It's not that we added any more quality to the squad in that time span, or made any material changes.....so other than the unexpected success from earlier in the season I don't know what has changed people's minds so drastically. Considering the injuries, the loss of our best player (and best in the league) in the summer, using our back up GK, glaring deficiencies in the squad etc etc not surprised we lost 3-0 to a side like Bayern. Is it pleasing? Of course not, but it should hardly be shocking. We got a long way to go before realistically going toe-to-toe with Europe's strongest teams and expecting positive results.......but we already knew that before the season even started, didn't we?
February 26, 20206 yr We will beat them 5-4 on aggregate 5-1 on the night it's going be greatest ever come back in Champions league history. The stars are aligned

February 27, 20206 yr We were well beaten. I thought Mount tried hard but lacked the quality on the ball. Reece James is fine in attack but frankly he is useless in defence whether in a 4 or a 5 for one of the goals that came down our right, and we are always getting caught out down there, he was like 50 metres up the pitch. I like James in the side but he just has to learn to balance defence with attack a lot better. I'll get laughed at by anyone still reading this thread but I thought Moses was a far better all round wing back in his premier winning season than James is right now. Gnabry has turned into a real star for Bayern.
February 27, 20206 yr We got rocked back to reality. Were closer to Valencia in terms of quality then Bayern. We are bang average. Nothing wrong with it, just have to realize were a top 6 club, not champions material. We are back to the era before Abramovich bought us in terms of quality (possibly less quality)

Little point repeating what majority have said - we were outclassed by a much better team on the night. Before the game I thought it would be tough, but you always hope you might nick a result or grind out a draw. But it became clear early on how much stronger (and quicker) they were than us and any optimism faded and I was just clinging on to getting lucky and them having one of those nights where they did everything but score, but we never get that lucky. Lamps was clearly disappointed but probably not surprised. Game by game, he is learning what players are good enough and he can count on going into next season and beyond and what players he will be saying so long to in the Summer. I wouldn't write off a player due to a one-off game with a great side like Munich, but unfortunately last night just confirmed what we already knew with certain players. Yet another wake-up call (as if we needed another) - let's just hope the powers that be take it on board and know they have to invest in some REAL QUALITY before next season, if they are expecting us to compete at this level. Agree. I am a bit concerned about the poor levels of fitness throughout our team and the lack of pattern or style to our play recently, but hopefully that's more about the quality of the opposition that made this look worse.
February 27, 20206 yr I was at the game last night, and for me the big difference between the teams were speed of pass and legs. Bayern’s full backs were so high in our half, making it five across to our four in midfield. If they lost possession the full backs or midfield players managed to get back into a shape to deal with our attack. we can’t break forward in numbers because if we lose possession we don’t have enough pace to get back. We don’t have pace to attack and go around anyone. We will have to make sure we buy players with more pace than we have now.

Yes they were stronger than yet we still created chances and their goals seemed to come from three defensive errors by us and they punished each one. For me this is probably Jorginho's last season, if a midfielder gets past Kovacic, Jorginho is not mobile enough to close down the break. Also James recently is often guilty of ball watching instead of helping out defensively, he has the speed to get back yet for me lacks the football nous to know when he is needed back in defense. By my reckoning Mount had two efforts on goal and a shot come-cross. For one of his shots Barkley followed up and it was saved by Neuer. Alonso also had a shot and we had three crosses which you would expect anyone could have scored from. So even though we were under more pressure we could have scored..........

No sense in adding more minutes to already tired legs. Absolutely not! It is still a tie, obviously the chances of a comeback are about 1 in 1000 but you never give up while there's still technically a chance, like ever. This would be crazy even by the recent CL standards if we pulled this off but we must still go to Munich with the intention of doing the impossible. Edited February 29, 20206 yr by Argo

March 9, 20206 yr Just as it might be of interest here. In Germany there is the idea of playing matches without fans because of the Corona virus. Just two weeks until the international break to slow down the spreading of the virus. First is probably North Rhine Westphalia where the match between Cologne and Gladbach at Wednesday probably will be the first and next weekend might be all matches. It might not be official now but the probability is very high. That would mean the same for next weeks CL match between our two teams. Edited March 9, 20206 yr by Maldeika
March 9, 20206 yr If it is played behind closed doors then so be it. It is strange when there is no handshake at the start of the match yet there is contact during the game, as well as after the result. I think if we play the same team we've had in the last two games we might be able to give Bayern a game in the 2and leg, we have nothing to lose. Remember Napoli back in 2012, anything is possible.

It's a joke for me not shaking hands in a physical contact game yet that is the recommendation. What I am hearing so far here is that only people with existing conditions are actually dying so perhaps this is an overreaction.

Yes, it usually seems to be only really dangerous to older people and people with existing conditions. Problem is that it is a new virus and when it extends without slowing down it might lead to undercapacities of hospitals, medicine etc. So the activism right now is more about slowing down the spreading of the virus to get into the warmer months and getting time. Germany right now just has two deaths. It is not official now but the state Bavaria will prohibit that any festivities and event with more then 1000 people will take place until Good Friday. With the international break that means two Bayern home matches - the one against Chelsea and a Bundesliga home match against Frankfurt.
March 10, 20206 yr Never suggested it before but I’m inclined to the team running dead in this match. The squad is threadbare and while hope springs eternal the odds of turning this around and then going deeper in the CL this season are low. The team is not strong enough to make the effort worthwhile. That’s a defeatist view of which I’m not proud. And it can be counterproductive destroying team morale. And it’s only worth it if it results in more sustained performance in the league.
March 10, 20206 yr I regret this 0-3 defeat.. With "behind closed doors", we could have a chance to win this game but we're not going to score three goals..

We'd be forever kicking ourselves knowing that with our best lineup we may have actually done it. No matter how unlikely it is, going there with any intention other than turning it around is unthinkable.
