The things is, Rice may be from the same league but he will need time to adjust to a different style of play. 

As much as he's had great results with it at WHU Moyes' compact underdog system compared to our front foot football is worlds apart and it is actually a system that helps defensive minded players look a lot better than they actually are. Lescott, Gravesen, Zouma and Howard to name 4 look/looked top class under Moyes but all at sea at a top team/more proactive setups.

Also what worries me about his game is at times he naturally slots into the CB positions when the team doesn't have the ball and to do that here in our 3-4-3 would cause a structural mess.

If we were looking to stick to this league/homegrown for a new midfielder in our system Kalvin Phillips would be a lot safer a bet as he's played in a system as complex and front foot/possesion based as Bielsa so there won't be that much adaption needed.

I hope I'm wrong as I'm resigned to this happening now (not nesseserily this summer but it's bound to happen eventually, there's too much noise and we're a sucker for a Disney story when it comes to players as shown by signing Lukaku twice) but I'm not seeing what so many are, he's good (very good even) at what he does and is perfect for a compact underdog set up but an untouchable in our midfield for the next decade? A team looking to close the gap on the two most relentless teams this league has seen, I just can't imagine it.

They are playing a dangerous game with Rice.

Even if you ignore our interest in Rice it’s abundantly clear that Rice is looking at life after WHU.

Of course you hear that his contract runs through to the end of season 23/24 with an option for another year 24/25 but this contract was signed in December 2018 so at the end of this season he will have completed 3 1/2 years on his his existing deal and that is key and come May 22 affords him the opportunity to buy himself out of his contract under Article 17 of FIFA regulations commonly know as a Webster

That I would suggest is highly unlikely although at some point big clubs are going to sign players who have walked out midway through a contract but WHU will know that being a player who they didn’t transfer in for a fee means that they are vulnerable if he does give notice because it would seem that he is own very low wages at WHU.

More recently the decision makers at FIFA and CAS who determine the amount the player/ new club ( the liability becomes joint and several)  has to pay to does reflect a nominal valuation transfer wise of the player. If there is a buy out fee in the players contract ( some National FAs like Spain require a sum to be included in the players contracts) which it seems there isn’t in Rices contract, then that’s the sum paid but if there isn’t there’s a method currently being used that factors in wages both at the old club and new club and a  couple of other criteria but for me that’s why WHU through Moyes are using the £150 million number to if you like warn the player and other clubs off by in effect saying that’s what we value him at.

My guess is that WHU are fearing the notice being issued by Rice because they then don’t control  anything Rice himself or should I say through his agents will know what other offers are in place and WHU will not have any say in the quantum of the compensation they will receive. It could be £50 million , it could be £100 million but it could if the panel take a negative view be way short of £50 million.

Put all that together and I think that Rice will be sold in the summer for around £75 million at most, that or if the win the EL he signs a new contract with a buy out clause and again I suspect it will be close to that £75 million mark

If they wait another year, that means a few suitors will be forced to buy someone else so there is less of a bidding war for him, couple that with the fact that he will then only have 1 more year left, makes it so that his fee will be even lower.

They should really capitalise this summer as I think they can only pull off a £100m+ deal now, with Utd being desperate to kick start their new era.

Rice probably wants CL football right away. 

I would go for Bissouma over Rice. Save ourselves about £60 million and still get a player proven in the EPL.

I can understand the desire to bring in Rice but it makes no sense to spend £100m plus on one player when we need to overhaul the squad as much as we do.

At the very least we need two centre halves, a replacement for Jorginho and a winger who plays like a winger. Yes there are other improvements needed but I can't see it all happening in one window. The four mentioned are essential though and spending that much on Rice just doesn't seem a viable option.

Totally agree Loz.

He's good but not £100m+ good. With Gallagher coming back next season, they are similar players and there are other areas on the pitch we need to strengthen.

Haha. Same. I know he's good, he has a bit of everything and leaves nothing on the pitch. But peak Nemanja Matic under Jose was probably better. For 100-150m you expect a game-changer. 

For me not giving that club West Ham such a huge vast sum of money is far more important than signing any player, reckon their rubbing their hands with the sums being mentioned

That what worries me. If we bring him back I feel it's for the Chelsea fan angle more/as opposed to how he fits the system. I can understand the fans letting their hearts rule but i really hope the club know better this time.

Just like with Lukaku (although Rice isn't a d**khead and I'm sure his love for the club is genuine) I can't help but worry we'll be talking about another square peg in a round hole this time in 1/2 years.

I personally think considering his age we just wait and potentially grab him on a free. If someone makes an outlandish offer for him and we feel the need to match it then fair enough. Not now though, this summer as others have mentioned has to be done right. 

Minimum we need two CBs and you could argue another wb depending on the system going forward. I'd like to see a switch to a back 4 if we're losing 2-3 of our current defenders, yet I feel Thiago at 37 would struggle in a back 4 so I don't know what TT has planned. 

Then there is also the matter of perhaps signing another attacker/forward who can create and score from the wing. Striker and AM should be fine with Connor and Broja coming back. So really we could probably do with 4 new players if you include a dm and we can't get all 4 players if we drop £100m> on just one of those targets.

Man do we have some needs next season. Literally every level of the team needs to be strengthened. Would love to get Dec! But, with us having Azpi, Chalobah, and T. Silva as our returning CBs next season, we clearly need CBs. Oh and we need depth at both RWB and LWB, as well. Centrally we also need to be revamped. It's clear that Jorgi just isn't there and Kante - Lord knows I love him - but the man needs someone to allow him to take some matches off. He's being ran into the ground. And we all know the situation about the striker. 

I just don't know if you can truly justify spending 100 - 150 m on a single player when you have the squad needs Chelsea have.

If we are to replace Kante and Jorginho I'd do Bissouma and Tchouaméni personally.

Well on the one hand sure is a downgrade but on the other many of us want to see what Connor can do for us, and Baka is comedy gold...

A lot of people criticize our lack of creativity in midfield. I am one of them but for me the biggest weakness in our midfield is how fragile it is. 

It's why I genuinely want both Bissouma and Tchouaméni.
