I really rated Bony when he was at Swansea and really wanted Chelsea to go after him when he signed for City, glad we dodged that bullet. 2. Morata- I was over the moon we got him over Lukaku and thought he was going to tear it up, I actually thought he would be a significant upgrade on Costa. I actually thought his link up play with Hazard & willian will be lethal, especially after his debut off the bench when we were down to 9 men or something against Burnley. 3. Mertesacker- We were linked to him when he was at Werder Bremen, I think we got Cahill instead. 4. Alonso- Thought he was average and not Chelsea standard but all things considered he turned out pretty decent especially as a Wingback Some mentions of players I really wanted CFC to sign & shame we didnt: Mane, Aguero & VVD.
August 13, 20205 yr 1. Pogba - what a ridiculous excuse for a human-being he is. 2. Shevchenko - ok we all knew he was in his twilight years but I thought he’d do better than he did. That goal against a Tottenham was peach though. 3. Robinho - even better was I there with a City mate for his debut and had put up with his sh*t the entire drive up from Portsmouth. He was very quiet on the way home! 4. Anelka - thought he was a moody, miserable self serving arse who couldn’t hack it at the highest level for more that 6 months. Nico was an amazing for us!

Of course can always have more than one player, so go for it and share your true thoughts and feelings. 1. Wayne Rooney, back in 2013 when we were desperate for a striker. 2. Morata. Got extremely hyped and expected so much from him, in the end he didn't live up to my expectations, not even close. Cuadrado also comes to mind. 3. Hulk, Balotelli. Always thought they were overrated by many, even at their peaks. 4. Alonso. Didn't know much about him and therefore didn't know what to expect from him. Couple of games later, things were already clear. A fantastic signing.
August 13, 20205 yr 1. Pepe 2. Quaresma 3. Rooney (2013) 4. Trying to think but don't believe I've ever been underwhelmed by a signing who turned out to be wow, closest example would probably be not feeling the Cahill signing and him turning into a dependable CB here.
August 13, 20205 yr 1. Which player were you desperate for us to sign, we didn’t for whatever reason and then was glad we didn’t after you saw him play elsewhere. Not really that desperate but anyway, Adriano. Right before his father died he was a real monster and he could have been amazing with Drogba but he went into a big depression so... 2. Which player were you desperate to sign, we did(!!!!) but then his time here was a bit meh. Don’t focus on the fee and wages, just in a footballing sense. Probably Cuadrado. I thought he would be good... 3. Which player did you want no where near Chelsea, we didn’t sign him and so we’re bloody glad we didn’t/felt vindicated after he performed rubbish elsewhere I guess I'll go with Steve G. 4. What player did you really not want at Chelsea but when we did sign him and he played for us, bloody hell are you glad we did. Not really sure but I did have mixed feelings about Pedro, since he wanted to play regularly but couldn't do it for Uefalona at the time, probably just because of the team he came from more than anything. From not being a fan of him I went to respect him as the big professional that he is.
August 13, 20205 yr 1. Rooney 2013 is a good shout, we would have been much more competitive in that season and maybe even won the title, but then we'd be stuck with a fat lump of expensive useless over the next 4 years. Also John Stones. 2. Torres. Filipe Luis but that was no fault of his own. 3. ANDY CARROLL AND PETER CROUCH INSTEAD OF GIROUD WHAT WERE YOU SMOKING ANTONIO 4. Washed up passionless journeyman Anelka, Costa also disgusted me but I recognised that we needed a good striker and he was that.
August 14, 20205 yr 1) Jackson Martinez. I liked the cut of his jib in around 2013 - we were desperate for a striker who could consistently score goals, and he looked like a good all-round striker with no glaring weaknesses. Then he flopped spectacularly at Atletico Madrid and has struggled with fitness/injury since. 2) Juan Cuadrado. He was dynamite for Fiorentina - quick, hard-working, technically decent and a real goal threat. Then we found that he wasn't strong enough to play in the PL and that he couldn't cope with living in England. I guess the lesson here is that you make sure the player is strong/adaptable enough to play in the PL - that's less likely if they're coming from Serie A because 1) it's a more tactical and less physical league and 2) the climate is very different. 3) Krzysztof Pi?tek. Some on here were interested but all I saw was a mid-table poacher who'd struggle to make the step up. Lo and behold... 4) Marcos Alonso. IMO he wasn't consistent enough for Fiorentina and he didn't have the defensive ability to play at left-back. Luckily Conte had other plans for him and so he made a major contribution during his first 18 months here. Not a spectacular success but better than any of us had a right to expect.
August 14, 20205 yr 1 - The only one I can think of recently was Sanchez. I really wanted him when his contract at Arsenal was running out, I thought he was the perfect fit for us at the time, but he signed for United with a terrible attitude. We ended up dodging a bullet there. 2 - Shevchenko. Who wouldn't have been desperate to sign him before we did? He was lethal before we signed him. Shevchenko with us always looked like he was fighting to just to keep up with the pace of the game. Maybe his legs had gone by the time he joined us, or he couldn't keep up with the pace of the league. 3 - There are quite a few. Hulk is the one that sticks out the most. He was linked to us in every transfer window for a few years in a row, and each time I was desperate for us not to sign him. 4 - Fabregas (his connections with Arsenal were still fresh in the mind at the time) Pulisic, I just didn't think he was all that great.

What player did you really not want at Chelsea but when we did sign him and he played for us, bloody hell are you glad we did. Of course can always have more than one player, so go for it and share your true thoughts and feelings. Love it! 1. Which player were you desperate for us to sign, we didn’t for whatever reason and then was glad we didn’t after you saw him play elsewhere. Okay, i've got a couple of weird ones: Olof Mellberg: Became a wonderful player in his own right, but had we signed him we would have missed out on Gallas who was clearly a class above (on the pitch!) Steven Gerrard: As above, except that we would have missed out on Michael Essien and possibly Michael Ballack. England's performances also showed that the pairing of Gerrard with Lampard invariably resulted in one of them stifling their natural game, whereas Ballack and Essien (more on this in a sec) had no problems playing a support role for Lampard to do his thing. Adriano: At the time, I felt we were desperate to have our own Thierry Henry, and Adriano was the best pure striker on the planet. I wonder how much it would have helped him to be away from Italy and in a more professional environment under Mourinho, though. Hulk: LOL. I thought he would be a great signing and the key to Andre Vilas-Boas's system working. I do wonder if, like Adriano, things would be different had he left Porto earlier. 2. Which player were you desperate to sign, we did(!!!!) but then his time here was a bit meh. Don’t focus on the fee and wages, just in a footballing sense. I want to include Willian and Essien here. Both ended up being fantastic servants for the club but IMO we never gave either the platform to reach the potential they could have. Willian never quite developed into the attacking midfield force-of-nature his technical and physical gifts seemed to suggest, partially due to the fact he played through some of our leanest years under Abramovich. Essien initially took a backseat to Lampard and Ballack until injuries cut short his prime years, leaving us with only a short glimpse of what he was capable of. Oscar. You can also include pretty much anyone we've ever signed to play at RB or LB in the last 15 years. A yearly cycle of search, hype, expectation and disappointment. Bosingwa? Del Horno? Zappacosta? In 15 years, only Azpilicueta and Ashley Cole have been unqualified successes. Yuri Zhirkov. A decent servant but that 'golden generation' of Russian players (Zhirkov, Arshavin, Pavulychenko etc...) really fell flat at the highest level. Mohamed Salah: Like Willian above or Aguero, after seeing them tear us apart in the CL I was desparate for them to sign. Salah just didn't have the mentality for a top club at that point. 3. Which player did you want no where near Chelsea, we didn’t sign him and so we’re bloody glad we didn’t/felt vindicated after he performed rubbish elsewhere Andy Johnson/Darren Bent/Cameron Jerome/Jermaine Defoe etc. A plethora of flavour-of-the-month English strikers who we were linked with every January because Drogba was injured/absent due to AFCCON/not scoring goals Eliaquim Mangala. Good but error-prone at Porto, he became an unmitigated disaster at City John Stones. Same as above, but even more expensive Wayne Rooney. I saw the logic in 2013, and the need to add a world-class star who would flourish under Mourinho's style, but already there were questions about his physical capabilities and longevity. At best we would have got 12-18 months of top performance before a sharp decline. 4. What player did you really not want at Chelsea but when we did sign him and he played for us, bloody hell are you glad we did. 100% Cesc Fabregas. A player associated with Arsenal and Barcelona at the height of our rivalry with them. I'd like to think he had some of his best years with Chelsea and saw the light in the end. Ashley Cole. Gallas and Bridge were fantastic and Wayne Bridge was a comparable, IMO better, player at the time. Nicolas Anelka. Thought he was toxic, lazy and a bad influence.
August 14, 20205 yr I'm going to go into these trying to pick some names that aren't obvious and probably aren't too recent either: 1. Which player were you desperate for us to sign, we didn’t for whatever reason and then was glad we didn’t after you saw him play elsewhere. Actually not sure, will need to think about this one 2. Which player were you desperate to sign, we did(!!!!) but then his time here was a bit meh. Don’t focus on the fee and wages, just in a footballing sense. Shevchenko - Loved him growing up, was a superstar and ballon dor winner for AC Milan, but we just bought him quite a bit after his prime and was going to be a tough ask to repeat his glory days. Still a fairly decent player for us though imo, definitely scored a few crackers (like against Spuds) but on the whole not as good as I wanted him to be. 3. Which player did you want no where near Chelsea, we didn’t sign him and so we’re bloody glad we didn’t/felt vindicated after he performed rubbish elsewhere. Harry Maguire - Massive fraud and would have been quite stupid to pay the ridiculous price as well 4. What player did you really not want at Chelsea but when we did sign him and he played for us, bloody hell are you glad we did. Giroud - I mean I always took the piss out of him at Arsenal for being much worse than their previous strikers (Henry, RVP etc) and just not being that great in general. Never really rated him that high yet im actually really glad hes got here and hes done well and has actually improved despite not being gifted with pace.
August 14, 20205 yr 1. This was a tough one. I'm trying to rack my brain as to targets I really wanted that ended up flopping. I think I would go Alexis, but I'm struggling to think of others at the current moment 2. Shevchenko - I was on cloud 9 when we signed this dude 3. John Stones comes to mind. I really try to not worry about the people we don't sign once they've gone somewhere else, but sometimes its hard to dismiss those signings you really wanted when they turn out to be great signings for the team they signed for - KDB for example - Also I saw someone mention Peter Crouch and Andy Carroll and OMG I did NOT want those two anywhere near Chelsea Football Club, so yeah, those three: Stones, Carroll and Crouch 4. Cahill's signing at the time, I didn't know anything about him and didn't think he'd be as instrumental as he ended up being.

August 14, 20205 yr Man, I wrote mine before reading the others yet just how many of us went for Shevchenko! Oh and I think Rooney is a good call out too, thought he was past it and not far wrong either with him dropping into midfield.
August 14, 20205 yr Can I add Hilario for #4. I wouldn’t say I didn’t want him here more that I didn’t see the point at all until he kept Barca at bay on his debut and later on had to come on an immediately saved a penalty against Watford. Cult hero for me!
August 16, 20205 yr I didn’t want Ashley Cole when we signed him and Gallas went other way, remember waking up in morning and hearing the news and thinking what are we playing at, little did I know what was to follow. “Ashley Cole’s won the European Cup”

Torres went to Liverpool and had an amazing career, but I never really saw much of Joaquin afterward. 2. Veron. Really wanted him to succeed with us so we could give it large to Utd 3. Robinho. Not that he was a bad footballer, I just wasn't sure he was worth the hassle 4. I didn't see any point in Victor Moses at the time, and thought Ashley Cole was not worth sending Gallas away for...oops Others I really wanted us to sign that never came here were: Wesley Sneijder, Huntelaar, Bonucci

Was too stupid to join the hype, but damn am I happy he didn't join in the end. 2 KDB - As a Genk fan he was back then my favo player and was so happy he came to Chelsea. Watched him play since he was with theyouth of Genk and his skills stood out like never seen before. But he caused me so much frustration as he never really got a fair chance. The fack that we had him and let him slip away and was amazing in Germany and now City almost every week makes it so much more frustrating. It would have been less frustrating if he went directly to City and we didn't let him slip through our fingers. 3 Biglia - Such an overrated player. 4 Rudiger - I love the Bundesliga and German national team, but every time I saw Rudiger play I was laughing so hard as he was so sh*t and he became a meme between me and my friends. He remained a meme once he ended up in Italy and I just kept sh*t talking him and got frustrated every time he got selected for the national team. Not understanding why such a horrible defender was seen as one of the best defender German has to offer. Once he signed for Chelsea all the smack-talk backfired and my friends kept mocking me about him. He turned out to become our most consitent defender and the on to rely on. So I was very happy we had him. Off course last season we all know how that went. We saw the old Rudiger I know again ? But 2 seasons ago I was happy with his performance.

So much hype, thought we had him then he went to City and shortly after, his career took a nosedive. 2. Shevchenko. What an incredible player in his prime, then came here and just... nothing. Torres for similar reasons too probably, although I wasnt as excited about him. 3. Falcao. And then.... we f**king did it anyway??? Wayne Rooney comes to mind too. Not because he wasnt a great player, but you could see his career slowing when we were linked and he wouldnt give us what we needed at the time, which was a 20 goals a season striker. 4. Ashley Cole. Nothing to do with his quality, just didnt like him as a person and as an Arsenal player. Anelka too. Didnt realise how much he still had left in him when he signed for us. If anyone hasnt seen the Anelka documentary on Netflix, give it a watch!

September 1, 20205 yr 1. Which player were you desperate for us to sign, we didn’t for whatever reason and then was glad we didn’t after you saw him play elsewhere. Not sure I ever get desperate for a player to sign, if it happens it happens. I liked the idea of signing Balotelli a few years ago, I was convinced there was a good player in there if a manager could just get his head right. Ironically we signed Costa a couple of years later who is a similar sort of personality. Luke Shaw, I suppose. We'd gone through so many average left backs after Cole left and I thought allowing him to go to United was a big mistake. He suffered a nasty injury not long after getting there, so who knows how things would have gone if he hadn't picked up that injury but he's not reached anywhere near the level of potential he showed early on and Bertrand, his replacement at Southampton has mostly out performed in the the years since. 2. Which player were you desperate to sign, we did(!!!!) but then his time here was a bit meh. Don’t focus on the fee and wages, just in a footballing sense. Torres. Thought we had signed an absolute, world class centre forward when he came. Thought he would be as close to 20 goals a season guaranteed as you can get. Was pretty buzzed when Panucci signed back in 2000, he carried a huge reputation and I couldn't believe we'd got him on loan and then he only played about 10 games and looked completely average. Left us, ended up at Roma and was one of the best defenders in Italy for a spell. EDIT: Chris Sutton, when the signing was first announced I thought it was brilliant we'd signed this English target man that was going to mix things up in our attack, having lacked goals in attack following the 98/99 season where we come so close to winning the league. 3. Which player did you want no where near Chelsea, we didn’t sign him and so we’re bloody glad we didn’t/felt vindicated after he performed rubbish elsewhere Can't really remember many players we were linked with, the recent ones that spring to mind are Andy Carroll and Antonio from West Ham... Really felt like we were just in a phase of being content to sign mediocrity all the time. 4. What player did you really not want at Chelsea but when we did sign him and he played for us, bloody hell are you glad we did. Can't really think of any. When Azpi signed I felt completely indifferent and expected him to be a bench warmer and move on within a couple of years. Maybe throw in David Luiz resigning for Chelsea as well, he was phenominal in that title winning season under Conte, that sweeper role in the middle of the back three was tailor made for him. September 3, 20205 yr 2. Which player were you desperate to sign, we did(!!!!) but then his time here was a bit meh. Don’t focus on the fee and wages, just in a footballing sense. Brian Laudrup. I thought he’d be a great signing for us when he arrived in the summer of 1998. I saw him playing a few times for Glasgow Rangers. I fully accept the standard in Scotland is much, much lower than in the Premiership. However, he’d played well for Denmark on a regular basis. He just never showed what he was capable off in his short time with us. I’m sure I remember reading there were ‘behind the scenes issues’ and he was unsettled almost from the moment he arrived.
