It don't think it will be in place of domestic league will be the CL instead.

Oh i was under the impression this could only happen via a breakaway.

I am going to buck the trend, and say that I am not against it.  Frankly, I want what is in the best interest of Chelsea, and I really don't give 2 hoots if other clubs are perceived to "lose" out.  This is really no different to the current system - and essentially, the top teams will always prosper at the expense of "little" teams.

From a business perspective it makes sense. I cant think of other industries, where successful companies have to share money, that is being earned because of them, with less successful companies. Can you imagine Apple (for example) being told that they had to share their profit with less successful companies. This is essentially what is happening at the moment. Money in English football is so high, but thats only because of the global reach of a handful of teams. Why should those handful of teams have to lose financially due to a % of that money being shared with other clubs?

The current system is antiquated and a refresh of this sort is potentially a way to update it.

So we have to fly to Spain, USA, or f*cking China to support our team?

No.

Literally as I type I now hear the PL will make us break away from this league aswell.

It is, PL have said they will ban the clubs if they go ahead to a super league. It’s the premier league or super league.

That's empty threats.

The EPL couldn't afford to lose us, Liverpool and ManUtd alone. Then you add another three teams and the six teams have all the leverage really.

The current system is based on merit, if you do well you get promoted, if you finish high enough in the top league or win a cup you get to qualify for Europe.

Any system that bucks that and is based on historical prestige is well and truly a disgrace.

There are always means and ways to reduce games if the desire is there yet I feel this is s more about TV revenues.

If we join a super league today, I’ll have to find a different team to support. Leyton Orient or whatever.

Sutton United for me, although they look like they’re going to win their league and get promoted to the football league for the first time so I’ll just be seen as a glory hunter there too :laugh2:

How is it different to playing away games in European competition?

You know it will be Chelsea v Manchester City in Beijing, Real Madrid v Man Utd in Atlanta, Barcelona v Inter in Sydney etc. Catering to the overseas fans.

I couldn’t disagree with you more if I tried.

Football is about risk & reward, if their is no risk, why bother?

I’d genuinely walk away from the sport I’ve loved all my life.

We still get most of our away games in the same country.

The details have not been published, but from what I have seen, there have been no details to suggest that Chelsea are looking to withdraw from domestic league competition. It is the Football authorities that are threatening to kick teams of domestic leagues.  Not Chelsea threatening to leave.

That has not been published or indicated.

Agree with Neville here.

The only thing I can possible understand here is that the big clubs want to break free from the corrupt claws of UEFA. That lot have NO right to take the moral high ground in any way whatsoever.

To be fair, the big clubs have always dominated the game anyway. Does this mean clubs outside the top six will at least have a chance of winning the league or making money? It's interesting to hear Gary Neville moaning about the three biggest clubs in England going along with it, despite the fact that Utd, Liverpool and Arsenal have always been the dominant ones in the league for a long time, until Chelsea and City were taken over.

I'm still reeling from this news and it appears quite complex, so forgive me for any ignorance of the minutia of details.

What would you do if you were the premier league? Kicking out the teams that are involved seems obvious, but who will tune in to watch Burnley v Norwich every week? This spells disaster for the premier league, and the clubs are the ones holding all the cards as far as I can see.

If that’s the case, then I’m sitting on the fence. I find it funny that this comes out when UEFA will be announcing changes to the UCL so it may be a way to force UEFA not to make them. Don’t know what’s going on, but seems like a clash of economic interests between UEFA and big clubs. I didn’t like the UCL change to begin with, thought that letting up to four teams into it and scraping the CWC was a bad move. Also, not convinced of playing the same Arsenal, Spuds, Utd... in the PL and then again in the Super League, that’s just boring. Plus this may mean that we don’t get to play the FA Cup. So I just don’t know.

Spot on. Arguably Neville's finest moment.

I read that it could be a move designed to put pressure on UEFA and the CL changes as that’s due to be finalised.

Can anyone offer an alternative view of the benefits of the breakaway?
