Just a feeling that this one has legs too it.

I dont believe City were actively looking to sell Sterling or Ake, nor do I think they are opposed to selling them either.

Ake must know at City he is very much the forth choice behind Diaz, Laporte and Stones. It seems like TT has let it be known he would receive a good crack at making Rudigers spot his own, and so Ake has let City know he is keen on the move. While they are not keen on selling him they won't make him stay, especially as he is a back up.

Personally I like the idea of Koulibaly more. Given his physical nature, greater height and understanding with Mendy. However he may have done what Raphinha has done, and let it be known we are not his first choice. Speculation on my part but he has been settled in Italy for years and, much like top German league talent goes to Bayern, often top Seria A talent goes to Juve, where he has been heavily linked.

From what I have read Ake looks much more solid on one side of defense than the other (a bit like De Ligt in that respect). I haven't watched much of him at City, but apparently he is liked by their fans. He would certainly be a significant improvement on Sarr if we are looking to reinforce the defensive options.

Ake is a very good defender. He's become much better at City and he actually had an excellent season for them last season. City supporters don't want to lose him.

I think he could be a shrewd signing and he'll slot in very nicely at that LCB spot.

He’d be a decent signing if he was cheap and replacing Sarr as a backup defender, but at the prices being quoted it sounds more like he’s going to be playing in the starting 11.  There’s definitely better defenders out there. Plus we’re giving them the excuse to go out and replace him with Cucurella who’s an upgrade for them.

This one is a bit weird to be honest. Ake is a good player but why are we after him? Rotational backup player... I don't get it...

I would see him as a replacement for Christensen. He would probably end up playing about as much.

Simple - he is prem league experienced, is available and is a better option than anything we have in that Rudiger shaped hole.

Is he an inspirational purchase? No. But he is a sensible one, in the sense that he will improve our current starting 11.

The worry is Ake is replacing Rudiger and Sarr will stay back up.

If we sign De Ligt I would see him as the replacement for Rudiger. Ake would be Christensen replacement.

Then we would have downgraded.

Possibly. That one is debatable. Christensen looked good for a few months under TT in 2021 but his Chelsea career was largely disappointing.

I can see it being Silva/de Ligt/Chalobah and Ake/Colwill.

I for one am not going to pretend Christensen was some force before Tuchel. Rudiger as well. Let’s see what Tuchel can do with them.

But Ake has never looked good. His positional play is awful and the timing of his tackling is poor. He's a bang average CB at best. He spent 4 years at Bournemouth and his defensive record was atrocious, up there with the worst in the league.

Christensen's form over the years has been up and down, but there have been times where he has looked the real deal. Ake has never looked like that. This would be a clear downgrade for me.

And one we have had twice before and not played him.

That is the strange thing; he wasn’t good enough for us when he was linked to us when Bournemouth got relegated. 2 seasons under Pep riding the bench and making the occasional appearance, & he is the dog’s bollocks.

If 4 of the 5 centre backs are Silva, De Ligt, Chalobah and Colwill, then at least if Ake is the Rudiger replacement, and considered a downgrade, we will still have overall better options than last year.

Silva = Silva

Chalobah = Chalobah

De Ligt > Christensen

Colwill > Sarr

Ake < Rudiger (probably)

Ake might surprise us as being on a par with Rudiger, possibly even an upgrade once you factor in better ability on the ball and his versatility. And the fact that he has managed to get 27 caps playing in the Dutch international defence is a good sign I suppose ... considering De Ligt and Van Dijk are the competition at centre back ...
