Absolutely mental that games have been called off over this… the queen was into horses so I’d slightly understand if the races were cancelled.

 

In general though it’s bizarre, working class, normal fans will be adversely affecting having booked travel and accommodation etc. across the country for games this weekend and they’ll be left out of pocket because a rich 96 year old died of natural causes. 
We’re in one of the worse cost of living crisis, everyone still has to turn up to work but the only entertainment for many is shut down.

 

Opinions on the monarchy aside, it’s piss poor to cancel the football over it.

Not just football, most major sports, everything stops, as a mark of respect, but no respect for the people who will have their plans turned upside down at short notice.

They should close all nightclubs and anything where people go and enjoy themselves. Will Alton Towers and other theme parks be packed with people screaming and laughing disrespectfully?  The nation is either in mourning or it isn’t.

I'm baffled by this. I'd have expected matches and other events to go ahead as planned, just maybe with the national anthem and a minute's silence beforehand, as will be the case for theatre performances.

Or at least it wasn't until they cancelled the football.

Now people are in Mourning over the cancelled matches. 

I guarantee more people in the country are impacted/upset/annoyed at these cancellations than they are over Lizzy.

For potter n Chelsea pov this is actually a very good news. He will 1 training week to install his idea to our team.

But because we give a minutes silence to any old commoners nowadays, the EPL are now forced to go overboard with the Queens passing and cancel the rest of the month of football.

As someone who has little interest in the Royal Family I find it a little strange they have canceled the games. It's not like she has passed at a young age. She lived a full life and a much longer life than many would dream of due to her privelage, there is a reason why most of the royals live long lives.

The country should see it as a celebration of life rather than mourning so it keeps the best of both worlds happy. If anything its put me into mourning so I don't get to see Potters first game this weekend.

That takes months, so if a football lover is involved in the organisation, they'll know to plan it during the off-season

I agree with this.

It is not meant in a unsympathetic, disrespectful manner, but if i had the chance to live to 96 and then get taken ill over a two day period and die in my sleep, I'd bite your hand off. My old man watched himself circling the plug hole for a year with cancer before it eventually got him.

The blanket coverage and overblown reporting is so over the top by our media it is getting crazy. They interviewed a random 8 year old child this morning to find out how upset she was over the news. For the love of God. Dare i say it but this is all bordering upon the levels of melodrama that we would expect from our friends across the pond. No disrespect meant, but all we are missing is for a news reader to start crying (my money is on that idiot Ben Shephard).

I fail to see the relevance, or indeed the disrespect involved, that requires football or any other sporting/leisure events to be cancelled.

I have nothing against our monarchy, nothing whatsoever, i am glad of the history and pageantry, but a bit of perspective please. It is a sad event, of course it is, but this is now largely a ceremonial position. We weren't in the process of invading the Welsh, we weren't looking to take on the tribal clans of highland scottish insurgents. We now have a King already installed and awaiting the ceremonial passing over of title. Do we really need to bring the entire country to a standstill for the entire period of mourning up until the funeral.

I know Henry VIII had a few divorces, but he was already King and was the one who basically invented divorces. But i can't think of any divorcees being crowned.

Not in the UK, I think. Perhaps some other monarchy with loosy-goosy morals 

Never understood why being divorced would be ssucha no-no, even in the first half of the 20th century, and don't get me started on having to have a protestant on the throne, and the whole Defender of the Faith business. Even if it's transformed to Defender of the Faiths (plural), can't those faiths defend themselves? What about us atheists, don't we get at least a baseball bat or a hockey stick behind the door?

In fact some of the overblown coverage is absolutely disrespectful to the Queen, people liked her, I get that but to claim she alone is responsible for making this country great ( really?) as Liz Truss claimed is making a comedy out of her death.

And Andrian Durham on talk sport said " the British troops fighting in Ukraine ( huh?) are massively respected because of the Queen"

Come on ffs , just pay your respects and stop all the nonsense

So far no news on the CL games, nothing official anyway. I have read the extra demands on the police over the next 10 days will be a factor, though most seem to think the European games will go ahead, though kind of a shame only Spurs have an away game, had they all been away logistically it would not be any issue for the police.

 

Seems her majesty's funeral will be a week on Sunday, and discussions are ongoing about those weekend league games, again in part because the police will be stretched thin, it may not be possible for games to go ahead.

Think the decision to cancel everything is incorrect … not that my opinion is of anyones concern but that’s how I feel. I get the decision and why it’s made, still disagree with it. Especially if they postpone or cancel next weekend fixtures as well.

Policing may be an issue. Nothing confirmed yet but most signs point to the midweek European games going ahead.

Don't think that policing on a midweek day will be an issue, unless they plan to do any commemoration (which would most likely affect only London). UEFA won't like it if they have to cancel the matches where English teams are playing, and they won't push for a cancellation and rightly so. This is the queen of one country, why the f**k do the Austrians, Germans, Spaniards, Portuguese, French, Croatians etc have to be affected by her passing? Whatever the PL thinks, most people outside this country give two f*s about the English monarchy. 

Having said this, so far everything I say goes the other way round, so it's likely they will now cancel the CL too
