The thing is while you could make an argument that the result was a freak in the contexts of possession, shots, xg etc, you absolutely cannot argue that it was a freak result in the context of our form under Potter.

There are no absolute rules in football management, but imo you should avoid playing two natural fullbacks in a back 3 in almost every possible circumstance. When I saw the line up today I was reminded of the Brighton away line up.

For me, these are tactical choices you can make when you are absolutely confident your players are happy and totally adapted to your ideas. That is patently not the case at the moment, and when you think that this is a back 3 that has never played together (in this context), and you have a natural center back on the bench in chalobah who is stylistically similar to the player he is replacing, it has to go down as an unforced error.

As for mudryk's misses, yes, in the context of the game you expect him to score one and lay one off for a tap in. But in the context of his confidence, his selection and non-selection, his fitness, etc, these are all decisions the manager takes. He is choosing to select an out of form player in an unfamiliar position.

Unfortunately Potter's tenure as manager has been littered with similar unforced errors. In this sense, he has not been unlucky, and was not unlucky today.

Bang on. Get a settled defence and keeper and only change when absolutely required … via injury or suspension. Todays defence invited mistakes via lack of familiarity or very importantly communication.

I agree with most of that post, but on the chance creation aspect , the basic facts simply don't support your statement.

Shots per PL game this season is 12.9 (with shot conversion of 8%). Last season it was 16.8 (with shot conversion of 12%).  We had more shots per game under Tuchel (we did score 76 goals in 38 games after all ... )

But people were saying Tuchel was holding our attack back, because he could get 20 goals a season out of the likes of Pulisic and Ziyech 😂

I have been saying for a while Todd and co love the Red Bull model, and more recently that with Vivell in tow an ex RB manager seemed likely.

With Nagelsmann available it makes the prospect looks more likely that it did with Marsch or Hasselhutl.

Would Nagelsmann end up being who we need to compete at the top? Or just another expensive payout from the club?

Remember the excellently run Bayern Munich were willing to pay him off after spending more than 20mill euros to RB for him in the first place, so is he really that good?

And while Potter is public enemy number 1 on here let's not forget it was Todd and co who hired him, sacked Tuchel, bought Koulibaly, and Cucurella, and Aubameyang etc etc.

I don't trust them to get it right.

Worried about Nagelsmann as well, I think he's overrated. But I'd literally take the groundsman we fired last week as manager over Potter

Not for me. Don't put us in this same situation again.

The cost to get Potter and his staff was 21.5mill, how much to sack them all?

If the owners decided to pull the plug is their call but for me it would be much better to appoint a caretaker and do proper, detailed research, interviews, take your time get it right than make a gut signing.

Potter was Todd's gut signing. Do we want to be here next year again because he made a mistake in replacing Potter with another manager who does not do the job we need?

100% a caretaker is the best option. We have a terrible run of fixtures toward the end of the season, we'd risk giving the new manager a bad start if he joins now. Thiago Silva as player manager would be interesting

Not Silva, nor JT for me. Not somebody the fan base would be calling to give the job too if they somehow won the CL or had an impressive run of league wins.

God I can’t wait until De Zerbi is our head coach. 🎵whatever Brighton do we can do it the same or worse 🎵

When are we going to have some pride and find our own coach (and players) without poaching off the next flavour of the month. Did well with poaching off Potter and Mudryk did we. If only we can be like Brighton and poach De Zerbi before he proved or hyped himself properly.

Looks like it might finally be over, thank f*ck

Nah to me that smacks of "I haven't got a source so I'm just going to repackage what everyone knows"

I'll personally be shocked if anything happens whilst we are still in the CL

Oh Axman. We tried. gave optimism a whirl. Pretty hard now. I’ve come full circle: back to the view that the owners are the problem, and winter is coming. I agree with you - it’s not Potter’s fault they hired him. How can we expect them to make a good next decision? This has been a massive capital incineration. It’s hard to see how they can reverse a litany of costly errors without committing  further similarly costly errors, which  they simply can’t afford. This is irredeemable. Convince me otherwise.

Is unfortunate as I do believe Potter has a lot of talent as a coach. However is looking like a case of right place, wrong time.  This combination of him and our ownership just is not working, a only one of them can actually go.

I do worry for the club with these owners, I fear we get hit hard with sanctions. Could be like a Leeds style collapse.

Let's hope the real Chelsea team shows up in the CL ties, there are no saving grace apart from a miracle run in the CL. I don't buy the logic that a team at 11th in the league, then somehow shows up and beat the best in Europe, especially given we played a really good strong team. If Potter played the reserve team and got beaten yesterday, I'd be more optimistic about our chances. No point debating about it, we will see how it all unfolds in the next few weeks.

Curious. Didn’t they terminate his contract.

Yeah I was surprised to hear that too but is how Fabrizo put it forward. Bayern are not silly with money.

Finish this season with Potter in charge, but I wouldn't be keeping him on beyond this season. 10 PL games remaining and the CL tie will now decide his future, but I don't see a turnaround occurring here.

The club needs to urgently plan for alternatives now. We've got over 6 months and a decent sample size to rely upon and it simply isn't good enough what he's produced to date.
