The only reason we are payingso much for him now is that he would be one of the two DMs we want in Chelsea first team squad. Maybe a back up to Caicedo if we get him or anyone else. No way we are spending so much on a player we would loan to Strasbourg. Either that or his ceiling is so high that we are prepared to pay a premium on him now than to risk waiting until he has a breakout season and prices beyond our reach

to be fair Santos and Casadei have proven to be great talents and have significantly risen in value since we bought them.

It does make me laugh that we view our guys as emerging talent specialists finding all of these pearls in the back of beyond. We're paying 20m- 30m a time on unproven kids that haven't even played real senior football. Of course we are signingbtgem, we're paying 10m more than anyone else is interested in paying

Well, signing this guy might mean that we might not be able to sign Caicedo, he might be our alternative. Moreso, the reason we are going so far to Rennes, and not allowing everybody to know about the players we want to sign is because our rivals will all of a sudden be interested in the players we want, and they may buy the player with more money.

So, it's best not to make too much noise about the player we want to buy. Every player is costly in the market today, so no need to be complaining about the amount we buy players.

The only problem is the amount we sell our own players. It's all partly due to the attitude of Chelsea fans. I read here someone saying he doesn't think CHO will play well for Fulham. Even Willian said he wants CHO to come to Fulham because he is a good player. When you do not support your players all through the season, and you say they are not good, you are going to sell them at cheap prices.

So we shouldn't come here and be complaining that we sell our players cheaply.

Okay, so the counter argument to that is who are we outbidding then. This latest signing played in 26 matches last season in Ligue 1. 1,328 minutes. His Trasfermrkt value is stating €9m. These figures are always low, but we paid what €25m. Apparently there were other clubs interested, Apparently. Did anyone else bid for him?

To be fair we didn't even know that Chelsea were interested him until today and now he's signed. As someone else mentioned Transfermarkt valuations aren't exactly reliable, Colwill is valued at €35m on there and that wouldn't be enough to buy his left leg.

We seem to be signing some good young players, so I'm confident Les will be decent too.

Still not entirely comfortable with spending so much on loan players, while we have holes in our squad anyway.

Would rather have a top keeper, and a partner for Enzo than 3 or 4 players tearing up in a different league on loan.

This.

If West Ham & Brighton were circling this guy then the fee makes sense, I suppose if we don’t land Caicedo, Ugochukwu gets a baptism of fire in his place, rather than going out on loan. Part of me does want to replicate the way City back down from deals when it gets too high but.. we are not exactly in City’s position of strength and subsequently the position to act in that way… (in regards to Caicedo).

We are spending a lot of money on really young players with very little experience. It’s making me a little nervous if I’m honest. Would be nice to spend some of this cash on 2 or 3 more seasoned players. Not sure how this is going to work out, but I really hope it does!

I can think of many things that would determine a players value, however I can safely say what fans are saying in a backstreet pub or their mums basement via twitter won't come remotely close to being one of them.

Calm down mate. They've done nothing much as of yet.

i mean their value has increased due to their performances in international tournaments and for Santos, making his full Brazil debut

i didn't talk about their achievements at chelsea

And how do you arrive at that conclusion. Who has tabled a bid more than what we bought them for or indeed paid for them at higher sums?

Caicedo is valued at £100m according to reports and if we succeed with an £80m bid then that's what he is worth.

So valuations are helpful but true value is decided on the agreed transactional fee and even at that in an inflated market, it's not the case.

This is the long term project the club wanted so the sooner fans accept that the easier it will be for you ladies and gents.

I rather this than spending what is considered standard amount of money now for us whenever we go in for a half decent player who’s had one good season. Every clubs wants £65+ million now from us.
Didn’t some fans always moan why we aren’t finding uncut diamonds yet when the club does try and do that some fans are moaning.

I could only imagine the uproar had we signed Kante from France he would’ve stood a chance with some fans.

Well said, a lot have forgotten that Boehly can’t sell Chelsea until 2032 so he has time to build over the next 5 years.

A close friend of mine is a big Rennes fan, waiting to hear back from him to share a detailed analysis.

Be interested to know. Worries me that we be getting a Bakayoko 2.0. Won't be able to fly in in the PL. He will have to have good timing if he is going to be on the front feet here. Fingers crossed that we have got this one right.

making your senior debut for Brazil at 19 years old and winning the Golden Ball and topscorer of the FIFA U-20 World Cup would increase the value of a player in a general sense. Maybe the word that should be used is stature. It won't matter the value of a player until we sell him.

we didn't know sh*t about Casadei when we signed him

that's the only point i'm making

in that sense the talent ID so far has been decent, also Paez had a great world cup after we signed him and he made his senior debut

Simple.

Give the kid a long contract which will amortise longer hence instead of 25M in 4 years (6.25M a year) we are probably giving him a 8 year contract (3.12M a year)

1) we have excellent resale value

2) If it doesn't work out we can get rid and he wont be on high wages

From a business standpoint it is a no brainer.

Yes 25M is high but

1) we are chelsea and we have shown the world we have money (lots of it)

2) we need midfielders and am pretty sure there is a bidding war for this guy

Opta stats show he is very similar to Lavia (50M) so calm down guys we are watching a youtube compilation of a 19 year old.. Give him 4 years and see what he is then. If he crap then big deal lol we got Santos n casadei breaking through

None of us see this guy as an alternative for Caicedo this season do we? Virtually no-one here has seen this guy play and so none of us would have the foggiest clue of what he's really worth. That consistent with the maxim, which I often see in my climate change work, that the less you know about something the stronger the opinion.

I don't think we can have the team full of 19 year olds. 22-25 average is fine. Any less its not serious. But actually the average isn't that bad

A notional starting 11 with Silva has an average age of 26 and excluding Silva 24. If you include a couple of the 20 year olds and maybe Madueke you might drop another year off the average. In short the team is actually, on average, maybe 1-2 years too young to wind the premier league based on historical averages but not that far off.

It's interesting that Carney is coming up for his 3rd season of premier league experience at that age. I know that preseasons are not the real thing, but I think you can see from games against Newcastle, a senior side in the champions league, and Brighton that the young guys looked competitive. It is pre season but equally this team are still developing their identity whereas Newcastle and Brighton have all been playing their system with their coach for an entire season.

I guess my point is you can still make an argument that at the transfer strategy is working and there is a fair bit of upside. I am very optimistic that Chukwumeka will be an absolute star and that Santos, Casedi and Gusto will have very solid premier league careers

With the completion of our pre season games approaching, and the new season only a couple of weeks away, its very hard to get your head around what this new ownership is thinking. Ofcourse signing young prospects is a sound long term strategy, but we have huge holes in our senior squad and its seeming that there is no definite urgency to get around tables and thrash these deals out one way or another, even after Pochettino has politely asked for similar.  Caicedo, lavia, Kudus, olise, seems to me priority is signing 1 of the first 2 and one of the second 2, so why are we possibly spending decent money on this rennes midfielder whilst priority signings are still hanging in the balance?  Priorities are all wrong.
