Isn't this the whole point of this younger project? I keep getting told that we sign young players so we don't need to go out and spend premium later......well one of those young players is showing signs that he could potentially become world class, and instead of making him number 1, we are now looking to sign a goalkeeper who looks like he is on a downwards trajectory.

I don't think you're wrong there, but imo Maresca has made his mind about Petro last year, regardless of what he did this season with Strasbourg. If anything I believe our owners are looking at the younger ones (Slonina/Penders) as the potential world class ones, so Petro/Sanchez would be just a sidestep.

That's why Maignan coming in and Petro being the one that fights him for the #1 shirt is the best I can hope at the moment.

@Scott Harris tends to be right most of the time so I'll trust in his views on the player and, if he signs, hope he is wrong but it does not look good bruv...

Age wise it makes sense, we seem to be really high on Penders who's 19 so wouldn't surprise me to see us send him to Strasbourg for a couple of years and then bring him back.

It wasn't Maresca that made his mind up, it was the board. He never had one training session with Petrovic before saying Sanchez was his number one. It was the same with Chalobah, Chukwuemeka and Chilwell.

Can we just sign Emiliano Martinez instead? Emi Martinez - Dibu is a penalty specialist, he is one of the best goalkeepers in the world and he is already premiership ready. He is 33 in September - lots of experience - still some years in him. World Cup winner. He has won all the top goalkeeping awards, many times. He has paid his dues - he has been on loan at Rotherham, Sheffield Wednesday, Wolves and Reading. He doesn't have to "adjust" to our league. He is a big lad - 6ft 5". IF we are going to play with a bunch of kids, it would be useful to have a grown up helping to organise our defence. AND Aston Villa are trying to sign Caoimhin Kelleher for £30million.

I think we should have signed Maignan when he was still at Lille but here we are now and I think he would be an excellent signing on and off the field. His age is a bonus because he keeps the pathway clear for Petrovic or Penders to be a future #1, much like Courtois/Cech.

Maignan has had a bad season (relatively speaking), but that is in the context of

• being a target of racial abuse in Serie A through 2024, limited action by the league

• suicidal defensive tactics under Conceicao

• club stalling on a contract

Despite a poor season his numbers are more or less the same as Sanchez's this season...who supposedly had a 'good' one.

I think he could be a Mendy-like signing for a couple of years to bridge the gap.

Couldn’t agree with it more. I feel as if the club are waiting on Penders to be the right age, Petrovic wouldn’t play second fiddle then. So, why not get some much needed experience in the squad while we wait for Penders. Throw in the fact that on his day he’s a massive upgrade on what we have.

Maignan is more reliable than Bobby Sanchez but also a worse goalkeeper than Bobby Sanchez.

Less brain farts but a lot more Kepa esque, he should’ve probably saved that moments.

Another colossal waste of money after the season Petrovic has just had (and had before being loaned out but that’s another story)

Hopefully this is just paper talk and doesn’t go through.

We did this whole thing last season when we bought Jorgensen. £25m and a complete waste of money. I’ve got no faith that this will be any better.
