Regrettable but true. "Letting somebody go" has been hijacked by HR departments that want people who are being screwed by the corporate combine to feel like it was in fact their own choice to throw their work day and income situation into an uncertain turmoil. "We're letting you go." Like it's something the staff member wanted.
It's a term I've diligently avoided using in that context for some decades.

In Thiago's case I believe he wanted to leave. I saw the video, I read the club's statements at the time. We let him leave, or as I said, we let him go. My point is we should have made it worth his while to stay, or at least get him in contract to return.

Not a huge fan of the signing, but at least it's a free transfer and if he can add some leadership and experience then it might turn out well.

I would say that England still got to the Semi Finals. They still turned up against Mexico in essentially an away game, and then had to travel and reset themselves against Norway in the heat, a team that had walked all over a "traditional top side" in international football.

For all we know Jordan Henderson was one of the reasons England were able to do that.

Brazil didn't get to the quarters. Germany didn't get to the quarters. Netherlands didn't get to the quarters. They weren't knocked out by a "traditional top side". Maybe they could have done with a Jordan Henderson.

I'm not a fan of this signing. Henderson was a good player, but that was years ago, and I don't think he's at the level Chelsea should be aiming for anymore. Midfield is one of the most physically demanding positions on the pitch, and once your legs start to go, it's hard to compensate.

That said, I'm in the minority who thinks our midfielders play too many minutes and that it catches up with them eventually. If Henderson helps spread the workload even if a bit, there is some value there. Still, both he and Welbeck feel like odd signings to me.
