July 27, 201411 yr Let's hope that Mikel shirt isn't still there come the start of the season. Yeah, he should be moved next to Terry to symbolise his new position as vice-captain!
July 28, 201411 yr How anybody can worry that Drogs is not good enough at this level anymore when we still have Torres in the squad is beyond me...what he brings with his experience and team ethic will do wonders behind the scenes and surely help with keeping the squad motivated, what he could bring on the field if used sparingly will still have opposition managers worrying. It certainly wouldn't tarnish anything he's achieved here for me if he played 5 games and looked rusty and past it, he's here for more than what he can do on the field but for me is still quality back up.

But nobody thinks torres is good enough at this level, so that first sentence is confusing. Agree with the rest though, I just hope costa does well, because I don't think torres and Drogba, could hold the fort longe than a game or 2.
July 28, 201411 yr I can only see Drogs being rolled out for 45 mins at a time at the very most. Probably more like 25-30 if we are winning and need to give Costa a rest / take him off early for protection / need a goal and have to change thigs up.

July 28, 201411 yr Do they know Africa is not a country :-) ? Anyway, we're all talking about Drogba in a coaching role, getting Lukaku to buckle down, etc., but do we even know Drogba is interested in such a role? Do we know this has been a topic of conversation between the club and Drogba? I can't help feeling we're assuming a bit. Perhapd Drogba sees a final year at Chelsea, instead of places that hardly matter on the international football map, a good club to end his playing career. He can't do wrong in the eyes of the supporters, that must be nice for a player. Personally, I think if Drogba's been brought back to influence any striker of ours, it's Costa and not Lukaku. Mourinho has made it quite clear that he sees no similarities between Lukaku and Drogba. We all notice similarities on the pitch, but perhaps what he was talking about was off the pitch such as his attitude and work ethic. Costa has the potential to play the 'Drogba' role due to his robust nature, whereas I don't think Lukaku has that in him and can see him going missing on numerous occasions if he was left up top on his own. Secondly, even if it wasn't written into his contract, both Lukaku and Costa will be aware of Drogba's legacy at the club and his presence and behaviours on and around the pitch will probably help Lukaku and Costa learn how they should act, both on and off the pitch. Drogba was, and still is, a fan favourite - they'd be stupid not to take note of how he conducts himself, whether Drogba is being told to mentor them or not.

July 30, 201411 yr Drogba could also be useful as an impact battering ram to break down the parked buses which gave us such problems last season.
July 30, 201411 yr In my opinion the only way Drogba's return can be counted as a reasonable decision and a success is if we won either the Champions League or the Premier League title this year, anything less would be a disappointment for me and would completely make he's return as a player a failure.
July 30, 201411 yr I think people, especially opposition fans, are underestimating a 36 year old Drogba; brushing him off like he won't be a threat any more. I mean sure, he looked less of a player for Galatasaray, but being back at chelsea, surrounded by superior (compared to galatasaray's players) talent and working under mourinho again, i think we could see a new lease of life in the old d®og yet. I am certainly not willing to write him off; he may well surprise a few critics yet. And to the critics! Edited July 30, 201411 yr by enigma

I get what you're saying there but I'd be happy for any trophy as I always am. But Prem or Champs League does feel like a must in order for Jose to keep his job. Although a top 3 finish with a League Cup and FA Cup double would probably also keep him his job and for me even that would be a satisfying season.
July 30, 201411 yr He will bring tons to the dressing room and can pass on some valuable expierence to our younger players. I don't see Drog playing a big part in our season though, he looked well past his best last season with Gala.
July 31, 201411 yr It's obvious he won't be playing week in week out, but I could see him scoring another against Arsenal and 1 more goal at Wembley.

Although a top 3 finish with a League Cup and FA Cup double would probably also keep him his job and for me even that would be a satisfying season. I wasn't really going in that direction, I'm not comparing Drogba as a major signing this summer that should define our season, that pressure is on Costa and Fabregas. I suppose I'm just way too much bought into the fairytale ending he had for us winning the CL with his last kick of the game I'm a bit disappointed that it can't end like that. But winning the CL or PL this season would only extend that legacy. Aswhile an f.a cup and 3rd place league finish would pretty much be like Michael Jordan joining the Wizards in 2001, it's symbolic to watch him play, but it's rather pointless.

I don't see Drog playing a big part in our season though, he looked well past his best last season with Gala. I think the galvanising effect for fans is another aspect gone unspoken so far. Chasing a game Drog on to help bust a defence will rally the atmosphere home and away and we all know Jose places big emphasis on fans' role in help achieving the objective.
July 31, 201411 yr I just hope his memory doesnt get tarnished, despite what people say.... it very well could be.
July 31, 201411 yr I just hope his memory doesnt get tarnished, despite what people say.... it very well could be.It is all down to how you take it. He will not score like he used to. He doesn't have the pace nor strenght. Prem is again slightly faster than 2 years back. No one will take away his heroics and his 157 goals. Up to you mate.

His legend status and his record will never be doubted, he is and will forever be one of the finest striker to wear the Blue shirt, it's simply the fairytale ending he had that maybe overwritten.
