Raheem Sterling to Chelsea

Featured Replies

Nothing Brendan Rogers says surprises me, he's a very strange man.

Sterling is one of Liverpool's best players and has been for a while so if I was him I would expect to be on a level with the top earners at my club as well. When comparing Sterling's offer to Kane's new deal it's important to note that Sterling has been an important player for Liverpool for two and a half seasons whereas Kane is only just emerging. Also they play for different clubs with very different budgets and wage structures.

I only mentioned Kane's contract because Liverpool might be using that as a yard stick for their own offer.

Rodger's has said of the contract offer:

"If they get too much, too young then it really sabotages their development.

It is very important for young players, not just Raheem, that they have something to strive for.
If they are given sound advice they will see that. It is about mapping out the career of a player. It is not just about this deal.
In Raheem's case, we believe this will be the best place for him and I believe he knows that as well."

To me he's saying "we're not going to pay you £120k+ a week because then you'll rest on your laurels".

And maybe he has a point but like you said he's already proving to be one of Liverpool's be players and if they're not willing to pay him a competitive salary then you can bet that there is at least 5 clubs in the waiting willing to give him the contract he wants.

If Liverpool finish outside of the top 4 this season you have to wonder how strong of a bargaining position they're actually going to be in.

I'm not sure I agree with Rogers' reasoning there, if it was me and I knew I was getting paid much less than many of my colleagues despite being better at my job then it would probably have quite a negative effect on my motivation. And I would probably start looking looking for another job...

I suspect he's just acting as PR for a club who are insecure about their future finances (a top four finish is looking unlikely) trying to Sterling signed up as cheap as possible and is grasping for a way to justify it. That way if Sterling does leave they can make it appear that Sterling is being unreasonable and greedy rather than Liverpool being too tight to give him a deal more in line with other key players.

Think you're bang on

Seems entirely appropriate for the new Michael Owen Jermain Defoe Darren Bent.

Can this please become a thing? It pains me to give Tottenham youngsters any credit whatsoever, especially when they have hair and gormless expressions as irritating as Kane's.

I am willing to compromise and call him the new Andy Johnson... you know what, I will be particularly fair and say the new Kevin Phillips.

It's quite amusing to me how someone has a couple of good months, or a good half a season, and suddenly they are world-beaters, the re-incarnation of Pele, Maradonna, Puskacz and Matthews all rolled into one.

The Premier League years are littered with them, and I can't think of one who actually achieved world greatness, the closest being Bale.

I'd be delighted to be convinced otherwise, though, but the slight cynicism that I have makes me think that it's unlikely.

He's a great player. Would love to see him here but that can only happen if he doesn't sign on a new contract. Liverpool would never sell him otherwise.

Wonder what the general consensus on Sterling would be if he was a Chelsea academy player.

We all know he wouldn't have even got a chance and would probably have been sold to Everton by this point.

I think he's an interesting player, certainly shown the ability to be a great attacking player but we've been here before with young players looking the dogs naughty bits only for them to fade away within a years.

(Lennon, Bentley, Townsend, Downing, Oxlade-Chamberlain to name a few).

Considering he would command a fee of the best part of £40-50m just because he's English it makes me lose all interest.

He's no better than Walcott imo average

Say it quietly but I quite rate Walcott.

If not for a couple of pretty serious injuries he'd have racked up a serious number of goals and assists by now.

When fully fit I think he's quite an effective winger/forward.

Before his injury, Walcott was starting to become a very good player. 21 goals and 14 assists in 31 appearances the season before he got his injury and 6 goals and 4 assists in 13 games the season he picked up his injury. Those stats are pretty damn impressive, especially when they come from the wing.

If he could stay fit he could have been one of the best players in the league right now. That is what you get when you join Arsenal though

As good as he is the constant need to rest, take breaks away etc is a worry. He`s only a young lad so it could be something he will grow through, but his mental strength would be a concern. Plus after seeing him constantly let players he`s supposed to be picking up wander away from him I Cant see Mourinho having too much interest in him.

i think Sterling is holding out on signing a new contract until he knows whether Liverpool will have Champions League football next season or not -  I could see either of the Manchester clubs going for him in the summer but not us

  • 1 month later...

Would have been a much better buy than cuadrado. Cuadrado is from a different league, hasn't settled yet and looks lost with the few minutes he has managed to play for us.

Sterling would cost far more than at the price we got Cuadrado though.

Talented, English, young, at a top end club and the medias darling.

Crazy money will be branded about for him.

I always feel it's a mistake to spend big half way through a season, so much more time to do this in the summer.

He would also have been a far more expensive buy than Cuadrado. Worth £26.4m according to Transfermarkt, but he is English, a fixture in the national team, a subject of plenty of positive media attention. We would also have to factor in Liverpool's reluctance to sell to a 'rival' (heh) - he would cost at absolute minimum £40m.

It's probably also worth pointing out that Cuadrado has made two starts so far, and hasn't actually played enough minutes to fill two full matches - might be worth giving him a chance before we write him off entirely!

I agree with what is being said about the cost, but we could have kept Salah, seeing as Mourinho has been giving Cuadrado as many minutes as Salah got before him. I am not writing Cuadrado off at all, i hope he comes good, but i just like what Sterling brings to the league, fast pacy player who is not afraid to take players on and attack. Think he would have been a good fit, i haven't seen a lot of Cuadrado before we bought him, apart from the world cup but he clearly isn't ready for the league at the moment, something Jose confirmed a month ago.

Best talent of his is falling over.  Last player we should sign if we are worried about being perceived as a club full of divers.  Suspect his free kicks awarded will dwindle when not playing for LFC

Ryan Starling is ok, but I don't think he'll get much better than he currently is. Just another young English player who breaks onto the scene, moves to a big club, then fades out.

This

Imagine if we did end up with Sterling.

He'd need to employ private security at his house because the Dippers would probably send hit-men after his family.
