September 26, 20196 yr 10 hours ago, just said: If you care to look through the opinions on any of the current Arsenal fan forums, they will see your Alonso and raise you a David "it's a penalty" Luiz. I tend to concur with their views on this. Can't believe i'll say it but i honestly think i'd rather have David Luiz defending last man than Alonso.

October 30, 20196 yr Hopefully he will be back by the time we face Crystal Palace at home. Really missing him, even if Alonso put in decent performances over the last few games, it only takes one bad to make him look terrible and not even bench worthy. Edited October 30, 20196 yr by Gol15
October 31, 20196 yr He's actually been defending a lot better than he does normally, these last few games. It's those gaping holes he always leaves though. He's a decent enough second choice to have after Emerson imo. If a top quality left back is available when the window opens for Chelsea, Emerson would move down to that position and Alonso can be let go. Edited October 31, 20196 yr by GhostOfDembaBa

November 2, 20196 yr I actually thought he was good besides the opening 10 minutes into the 2nd half.
November 2, 20196 yr I thought he did ok. There was a couple of situations I wish he handled better though, but still far better then what Azpilicueta produced on the other side.
November 2, 20196 yr Thought he was excellent myself. Kept his man quiet and didn't leave much space on his side which helped us play the perfect away-game until the penalty-farce.

Either i missed it or did Emerson put a ball in, a cross, anything? Apart from one time where Zouma made an heroic block and saved Emerson's error i couldn't see much bad or good in his game. He just was there.

Azpi produced loads of chances, unfortunately they were almost all for Watford, his passing was atrocious.
November 3, 20196 yr Its not easy coming back from an injury and to the rhythm of your teammates, It will take a couple of games. Palmieri was good, and much better than alonso so in my eyes the LB is his for the time being and can only see him getting stronger.
November 4, 20196 yr Even in a mediocre game he's still better than Alonso, offers more everywhere on the pitch other than in the 6 yard box.

Two seasons ago and even probably last season I wouldn't have agreed with you but Alonso in the back 4 just doesn't work. He has some good aspects, his long range passing and first touch are actually really good, even his dribbling and shooting obviously. But defensively he's a liability and he doesn't have the pace to get up and down the field accordingly. I think he has been a great servant to the club and his mentality is actually great on the sidelines, doesn't complain and gets on with it, but it's probably time to get a replacement in the summer, I don't think he's up to standard.
November 4, 20196 yr Neither of them are imo. If we had a left back version of Reece James neither would get a look in.
November 23, 20196 yr I don't like to be fickle, but this game has really changed my view on him, that was a shocking performance, I think even Alonso would've played better today. A sad reality but maybe we do need a new LB, I thought this season Emerson was going to prove a point.
November 23, 20196 yr Don't know what happened to him today. Destroyed by an average Mahrez and couldn't even get a decent cross in.

November 23, 20196 yr I’m might be in the minority but I think this guy is bang average. He can’t defend, he might be faster than Alonso but when he gets into decent positions he doesn’t do anything with conviction, whether it’s crossing or shooting, he doesn’t do enough going forward for me. We need to upgrade IMO.
November 23, 20196 yr He's had some really good games were he looks very good going forward, and when Alonso was playing we were desperately missing Palmieri in the side. He might have just had a stinker but that just looked like a lack of quality to me, some of his decision making was extremely questionable, why on earth go for a shot at that angle? All you have to do is cross it or square it Tammy was unmarked, Mendy gave him a sh*t load of space. Like @coco said in the match thread, I could forgive that if he could at least defend, but he got humiliated today.
November 23, 20196 yr Until we find a better LB, I prefer Azpi at LB and James at RB - certainly against more dangerous attacks like City’s. Perhaps we lose something attacking-wise, but a) is emerson even a good attacking option given his poor final balls etc? b) we can compensate by reverting to 4-2-3-1 formation.
