Jorginho is.... (well now was) a Blue

Jorginho pisses away the limited goodwill he has among the Chelsea fans in an interview with ESPN Brazil:

‘Look, I’ll be really sincere here on Lampard. I believe, given he was a legend at the club, he skipped some steps necessary for learning before moving to a big club. He came to a club where he is a legend, without having experience at other clubs. I think he came too soon, skipped a few steps ahead and wasn’t ready for a job at this level, to be honest.’

I don't think commenting on Lamps' inexperience is that outrageous. A year in a Championship club really doesn't prepare someone for one of the toughest management jobs in world football.

Its just running parallel with 2012. Avb got fired and his assistant captain(Lampard) said may be he got the job too early in his career . Now its 2021 lampard gets fired and his assistant captain (Jorginho) says the same.

I am sorry but we are winning the Champions league...lol

He may not be ready but he got the decision to bench him to improve our offensive play absolutely right!

if players like him

had actually done their job .. don’t think the coach would have lost his.

He is only still here because there aren't fans at SB every week. He'd have gone the way of Sarri if there were.

Btw I think you can read this as "he didn't play my way therefore wasn't ready". I'd expect Luiz to say similar things at some point.

Hi guys, longtime lurker from Brazil here! Just watched Jorginho's interview and thought I should add some interesting bits to this topic.

- About Frank, he did say all that about his coaching inexperience, said that maybe with more experience at Derby or other clubs maybe Frank could have reacted better in some games and/or on expressing what he wanted from the players. I thought he was also humble in admiting he himself wasn't fit to what was asked of him, to adopt a more direct style, long passes, as that doesn't really suit his game at all, so Jorginho understood that and tried hard to adapt on training.

- On that note, he said TT is quite clear on what he wants, and has the know-all to speak to everyone on and off the field, which is kinda expected considering TT's experience. (Although some in-game reactions from Tuchel have also been very suspicious, I mean, Reece at LB???).

- He also spoke on how Sarri and TT have very similar philosophies as far as football goes, with all the focus on passing the ball around quickly, keeping it short, on the ground.

- About his penalty technique, he revealed it came up by accident on a post-training challenge he used to do against a Brazilian CB while in Napoli. He fooled around and came up with it and as the results were pretty good he stook with it. He said it's all about the keeper moving a bit in that millisecond where he hops, so he can choose a side. And if the GK doesn't react then he has a spot where he feels more comfortable hitting the ball.

-  On the PL, he enjoys the intensity of the game and is amazed by how the players are so strong and still running in the dying seconds of a match, and said he struggled a bit with that on his first game/season. It was also interesting to see him saying that he wasn't really aware that Sarri wanted him at Chelsea as he was ready to play for Carlo at Napoli, but suddenly De Laurentis told him that he was also going. Joked (?) that he was ready to move on from Sarri after working with him for 4 years, but since the offer came from Chelsea he gladly accepted.

- Finally, to give some fans a little bit of hope, when asked about a possibility of returning to Napoli, he said they'll always have a special place in his heart, and if there's a chance he would surely consider it as he plans to play in Europe at least until the 2022 WC.

That's pretty much it! Sorry if it was a bit too long!

Its important to have him in the squad, although our midfield don't score goals the level of the main four is consistently good. Jorginho, Kova, Kante and although he plays further fwd recently Mount. When you look at the names and performances there isn't a huge drop off which is important for a squad looking to win titles.

The UK tabloid press blew this way out of proportion (where’s my shocked face?!) with e.g. “Jorginho takes swipe at Frank Lampard...”.

Jorginho said nothing outrageous, showed no disrespect. What he said was accurate (anyone think SFL DIDN’T skip some steps or that his track record at Derby warranted him landing the Chelsea job?) and others have pointed out the AVB parallel. Nothing to see here

Not sure on that Dean. These guys are media trained to within an inch of their lives even in multiple languages. They're practically politicians. This would have been written in the media briefings for months - if asked about Lampard - don't say Lampard was too inexperienced.

There's a long history of Brazilian players giving much more honest views in the Brazilian press and this is an example of that.

i agree with this .. Jorginho is not a young player he is a very experienced international so to think that this was somehow not what he intended to say would be a little naive.. It was clear to see Jorginho didn't fit in Lamps football he got displaced by an 18 year old rookie to be honest because he cannot play expansive football..

The philosophy that lamps had was to make the football pitch as big as possible and then try to get good match-ups for our attacking players.. hence our wide players did well under him.. Under Tuchel we always have 2-3 players close to the ball carrier and try to play 1-2s to create.. this means we struggle to isolate opposition but at the same time always have enough men to counter press and are never out of defensive shape..

the one question is has Jorginho been worth the 60Mill we spent on him?

Fair enough. I get the argument that maybe he should say nothing at all on it, precisely because of the media’s tendency to sensationalise (don’t give them an inch). but some of the reaction against Jorginho is excessive imo. what he said was fairly innocuous and if it were any manager other than Frank nobody would bat an eyelid.

I get you. But it is Frank. Even the owner made a statement after his sacking. That has never happened before.

You choose your words carefully at the best of times let alone when discussing arguably the greatest player to play for the club.

I think what you say is right but I won't get into your question! I've been round the block too many times on that one and know better by now!

Also fair. A difference in philosophy I guess. I don’t think Frank should get special treatment at the professional  level because of his status. He shouldn’t be exempt from criticism (and in this case it was actually quite constructive, no malice there), and the person who would benefit least from such an exemption is Frank himself. That doesn’t mean the criticism should be via a public interview  in Brazilian media. I can accept Jorginho should have held his tongue. But still doesn’t warrant a backlash. In the annals of media missteps by footballers, this doesn’t even register.

I'd say Jorgi was a bit naive (and probably a little bit bitter towards Frank and his spell on the sidelines), but in a way I believe the whole interview is set up to catch him off guard on remarks like those.

I'm not sure any of you guys saw an image of it, but it was Jorgi at home (late at night before the game against City) and 3 former players (two working as pundits now) + 1 journalist all friendly talking, it's like a very cozy setup that invites you to talk openly about any subject. I also agree that he should have held his tongue, but can almost understand why he didn't, probably thought those words wouldn't even reach overseas, which is a kinda dumb thing to do nowadays.

I'm not really sure how those interviews are done in the British media, but here in Brazil they're mostly always like that, which is no wonder why players like Willian get caught with some really controversial remarks.

Anyway, to answer Jangz question, while I'd definitely move on from Jorgi as a starter next season (and give Billy a chance before spending another 60M), has he produced twice than 30M Danny? 😅 If so I'd say he paid his due, especially being pivotal to Sarri's transition system and helping us reach CL in all his years here. In hindsight he was a bit overpriced, but at the time was also sought by City so it's understandable. Plus prices are kinda crazy anyway.

I don't think he's naive I mean he's saying what basically everyone thought about Frankie even before he got the job, it was no secret that it was a massive step for him and there were talks about that the club made him an offer that he couldn't refuse in their efforts to gain back the fans after many were unhappy with Sarri adding that at the time the club had a transfer ban so it was a cheeky move by the club from what I heard and many of us were simply not happy when they pulled the trigger after the first sign of trouble.

We all wanted the best case scenario but it didn't happen, if Jorginho is saying the truth then it sets him free anyway so it is what it is I mean if everyone is thinking it and if someone says it in public or among themselves in a room without a journalist, it makes no difference. It's over we changed the manager and the club is still trying to finish in the top 4 and we're in the semis of the CL, people that are involved with the club can't really afford to live in the past.

Lampard himself said a similar thing about Villas-Boas and it was also the truth back then, the manager tried and it didn't work out. It makes no difference who says it.

Oh don't get me wrong, you're totally right in that we shouldn't be dwelling in the past. But that's precisely why I think he was naive as it's never a good look for the player who says it. He gains nothing out of it, except irking some fans and giving the media fuel for poorly constructed headlines. If he had just moved on from the question we wouldn't even be discussing something he said in his room to friends/journos.

IIRC Frank also got some heat back then didn't he?

But nevermind that, like Don Antonio said it's just a parallel to the CL triumph, so let's just celebrate Jorginho remarks 😁

Huge test for Jorginho against that Real Madrid midfield Kroos and Modric are very clever, experienced pros.

Really need Jorginho to play a blinder in the two legs against Real.

but maybe it will be a battle of attrition i think he should be able to match the pace of a 35 year old Modric 🙂 .. but my God Kroos is a proper player.. his passing range is insane.. the last time we played against such a player in thiago we got thumped.. hopefully we have a better game plan this time.

I'm encouraged to see that despite his age Jorginho is still learning. I noticed on Saturday that when he received the ball, took a touch, swiveled and passed it back to Ridiger, this was followed by a new gesture suggesting the movement up front was not to his liking.

Just now, just said:

I'm beginning to warm to him.

Me too Just.

When he got done early (by Hazard?) and picked up the yellow card I feared the worst and could see us going down to 10 men. But he got better and better as the game went on and played a blinder tonight. Quality.
