European Super League

Featured Replies

Not sure if I’ve posted this in the right forum, but we’re one of the 8 founders for the super league according to football leaks.

This is beginning to look like it could actually happen, which is disgusting. I hate the whole idea of it, and it’d completely kill the English football tradition.

I am completely against it, the whole thing will feel very Americanised.

How does everybody feel about it?

Have you got a link to how it works? Do we leave the Prem to play in this? Is it just another tournament? Is it replacing the Champions league? Who are the other teams?

replacing the champions league, but the founder 11 teams qualify automatically for the first 20 years.

It just looks like the elite looking after the elite. I guess it will depend on how other teams can qualify to play in it, as to whether or not it will happen.

A closed league between the world's richest clubs, has no sporting integrity in my opinion.

I might be missing the point of this as i am no business person. I thought the Premier League was the big money earner in English football, are we going to be walking away from that ?

I mean I don't like that idea at all. But when you look at how polarized the PL has become (6 teams fighting for supremacy and the rest get fcuk all), it's unfortunately a logical evolution of the sport ... However fierce I am against it, it will certainly happen unfortunately. For instance, for anyone who has played fifa 03 on PS2/PC etc, there was a mode called total club championship with 16/20 top european teams where you could choose from and play in a sort of superleague .... Strange but now it may materialise in real life. And if I remember corredtly, someone in this forum said that the idea of a superleague goes back as far as in the 70's apparently ...

Yes but the 'super league' will generate a great deal more. When this does occur and it will, how soon maybe debatable, but the TV deals will dwindle away from the EPL and poured into the 'super league'.  Players will earn stupid amounts of money....I guess for Spurs fans it will be the only real chance of them winning the EPL because the all the other 'super teams' would have left....mind you Watford might give them a run :laugh2:

I would rather play spurs and watford on a saturday than madrid and bayern. I can envisage the big clubs losing proper fans and gaining even more tourists to fill seats.

Don't find the word. It's 'geldwolven' in Flemish. Translation 'Money wolves', but that's not correct, I geuss.  I suppose you have your own words and metaphors for that. You know? People who are only interested in money. Not in my beloved game and certainly not in other teams in smaller countries.

Boehhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

Probably something like Fat cats.

a European super league was always going to happen.....just like the premier league occurred.  One thing is for certain, change always happens, its just a matter of when.

It's a bit different though. The Premier League is still the First Division, the only real difference is the money and name. With a Super League, everything changes. From what I am reading, they plan to ditch domestic football and European football altogether. No more FA Cup, no more League cup, no more derby days, no more great Champions League memories at the Bridge. It sounds awful, how do we as fans benefit from this? I don't want to see us playing the same 15 teams every season for the next 20 years, it's boring. It would destroy football from my point of view, I imagine 99% of fans from each of these teams involved would feel the same way.

It's the worst thing ever, made for rich owners and new generation of entertainment fans.

I prefer to watch Chelsea play Leeds and Spuds or Rangers playing Celtic than to have a forced Barcelona:Bayern game every week, the beauty of football isn't EA Fifa where everyone always pick the top team of each year and ignore 90% of the clubs and player pool, but that's something that 13 year olds and Billionaires don't get.

Agreed, it takes away the surprise and prestige of those European games too as we'd be playing those teams every week.

Even as a foreign fan, one of the highlights of my year is watching this great football club trek through a 38-game season where surprises abound, anyone can defeat anyone and glory awaits. Not to mention the added lure of the historic FA Cup and Champions League. Even the League Cup and Europa League have value. You also play a diverse range of teams, each with its own distinct character, style and history.

Lest I sound like a Liverpool fan, replacing all of that history and all those clubs and trophies with some soulless, corporatised 'Super League' where you get to play the same few elite teams for at least the next two decades would become very monotonous very fast and would estrange the club from its roots and history. So it's a definite 'no' from me.

I have no idea how I would react if this dastardly plan came to fruition, but it would at the very least be a drain on my support for the club and at worst turn me away from the club altogether, for a very long time if not forever.

Fans need to come out very strongly against this. I would sign a petition opposing the idea if directed to one.

I can’t really take these so-called plans seriously. I can accept that there may have been a discussion (I’d be more surprised if this had never been discussed) but that doesn’t mean anything will happen. From reading the article above, it sounds more like a closed-off version of the CL rather than a replacement for national leagues anyway.

I am confused. Can someone put this in language for a 10 year old?

The big teams want to replace the champions League with a European competition where the big teams qualify automatically.

It would ruin the premier league as places 2-6 mean nothing anymore

Also it would probably be a competition where games are played on Saturdays

It won't happen. What will happen is a revamped champions League with games on Saturdays. That will happen in the next ten years
