This podcast is definitely worth a listen. Talks about the changes under Bohley and what’s changed.

Looks like we’re following the City and Liverpool model of empowering the manager and letting them make the big calls. Cech and Mariana wanted to keep Lukaku whereas Tuchel didn’t.

Looks like Bohley is willing to take a hit to get things moving and sort the squad out. Mariana would still be hangling.

I still don't understand why the deal for Lukaku has to precede any other transfer activity. The loan fee is £7m and if, big if, they pay his wages in full that will return a further £16.9m. So £24m in all, maximum.

With the £200m transfer kitty reported just before the window opened I don't understand why a £24m loan is so pivotal to our transfer strategy

I hope this finally reassures some people that Boehly is not just dilly-dallying about as some suggested earlier in the thread. Marina, Bruce and now Lukaku's exit clearly shows that there is a lot of shuffling going on behind the scenes. People need to chill and not compare our transfer activity to Liverpool and City who already have a board, recruitment team etc already set up.

It frees up 325k wages per week....with FFP it's vital to get that off the books

Now it’s just Timo’s 270k pw wages to get rid of. The interesting thing though for all the talk of our wage structure being bad, if Timo was somehow to be shipped we’re suddenly looking ok, as the Kante wages can somewhat be justified considering his profile and then you’ve got Chilwell on a reported 190k with the rest on 150k and below. The negative after this is just the fact we’re stuck with Kepa (155k pw) & Sarr on 120k pw until the year 2025.

The only one there who stands out like a sore thumb is Timo, who even IF he was performing how we imagined should have never been on £75k more than Harry Kane. Liverpool in comparison to this have £200k pw as pretty much the baseline, as their highest earner is Van Dijk on £220k pw. Probably unrealistic we can emulate this, if we shipped Timo & Kante, it could set a precedent going forward. Although with Sterling being linked to us already on 300k pw it’s unlikely.

I'm probably missing something obvious but could offering inflated signing on fees make up for a relative lack of wages? For example if we sign Sterling could we offer 250k and add the other 50k a week for 5 years onto his original signing on fee?

This way the players get what they want/are worth and we technically are sticking to a somewhat healthy wage structure.

Timo, Kepa, Sarr and Pulisic don't provide value for money and should be shifted weather on loan or sold.

Kante we need to get to lower his wages significantly in order for an extension to happen imo.

In Liverpool’s case it was actually exposed by Der Spiegel in a leak that there are bonuses associated for clean sheets and goals, fairly achievable bonuses which inflate those modest looking wages but not by a lot. As for signing on bonuses, when it’s in-house it rarely gets reported unless it’s a new signing, like when Arsenal signed Aubameyang on 200k pw but actually gave him a £18m signing on bonus 😅

I suppose the only problem with any of this, like you suggested is that the more shrewd agents will find out all about the Ins and outs of other players deals through mutual connections, therefore can sniff it out and we end up paying out either way. Liverpool structure regardless of bonuses is genuinely elite and the benchmark, when a player gets too big for their boots they are shown the door and the scouting network sorts out the perfect replacement. Their new boy will be on £140k pw reportedly whilst Sane has gone to Bayern for reportedly over £350k pw.

Change is good.  This is a long term project and we need to expect 1-3 years of rebuilding as a new club structure is put in place.  Would love to see us firing on more fronts right now (i.e., signing players), but plenty of time left thru Aug.  My main concern is whether the type and quality of player we need is available.

I get that but if we are in such a headlock that we can't trade until after it is off the books for FFP then what's the rubbish about a 200m transfer war chest. 325k pw is about 3 Malang Sarr's. If this is the rationale I expect this coming season could be very tough as we will probably have to move on Werner, Kepa, Sarr, Kante, Jorgi, and Alonso before we buy any one so that we have accumulated enough FFP credit to pay the wages of the new players.

I get the overall strategy, just don't understand the order and some of the reports of our actions or inaction to date

Chelsea Football Club today announced a series of appointments to its Board of Directors and other leadership changes.

'As custodians of Chelsea FC, we now begin executing our long-term vision and plan for the Club, creating an outstanding experience for its passionate, loyal fans, and continuing to challenge for top honours in line with Chelsea FC’s decorated history,' said Todd Boehly, co-controlling owner of Chelsea FC, and chairman and CEO of Eldridge. 'Working together, side-by-side, we are firmly committed to winning, both on and off the pitch. For us, that effort has begun.'

'As the new era of the Boehly-Clearlake ownership begins, we are excited to build a championship organisation and grow Chelsea FC as a global platform,' said Behdad Eghbali and José E. Feliciano, co-controlling owners of Chelsea FC, and co-founders and managing partners of Clearlake Capital. 'We look forward to backing Thomas Tuchel, Emma Hayes and their teams, and will provide proactive, unbending support to make Chelsea’s loyal fans and our partners proud.'

Boehly has been named chairman of the board of Chelsea FC effective immediately. Chelsea FC’s other confirmed board members include:

• Behdad Eghbali and José E. Feliciano, co-controlling owners of Chelsea FC, and co-founders and managing partners of Clearlake Capital
• Mark Walter, co-owner of Chelsea FC, co-founder and CEO of Guggenheim Partners, owner of Los Angeles Dodgers, Los Angeles Lakers, and Los Angeles Sparks
• Hansjörg Wyss, co-owner of Chelsea FC, founder of the Wyss Foundation
• Jonathan Goldstein, co-owner of Chelsea FC, co-founder and CEO of Cain International
• Barbara Charone, director and co-founder of MBC PR
• Lord Daniel Finkelstein OBE, columnist and former executive editor of The Times
• James Pade, partner and managing director of Clearlake Capital

The announcement includes the departure of Marina Granovskaia, director of Chelsea FC. Boehly will operate as interim sporting director until the Club names a full-time replacement, continuing the Club’s work towards its targets during the current transfer window. Chelsea FC and Ms. Granovskaia have agreed that she will remain available to Boehly and the Club for the duration of the current transfer window, to the extent required to support the transition.

'We thank Marina for her many years of excellent service to the Club and wish her all the best in her future ventures,' added Boehly.

Malang Sarr is on £120k per week?!! Who on earth authorised that deal? Crazy money.

This is interesting. Most of the wages are fairly balanced with Kai at around 150K, etc. Lukaku was obvious as it was a big money move. Timo's agent must be a Rockstar. How did he manage to negotiate 270K a week when he was probably under 100K at Leipzig?

Liverpool was interested in him

to buy a player with so many clubs after him, you need to pay him well

we all know how its works

Fair point. Had forgotten pool were interested.

The thing with that thought, as previously mentioned, Liverpool won’t go over 200k pw, that is their baseline pretty much. So the offer (if there ever was one) would have been nowhere near that, unless Timo was willing to risk it all for bonuses. We honestly did not need to offer this kind of money, the agent won.

I still can’t get over Sarr on £120k. I know he was a free transfer but the guy was meant to go out on loan. Why would you offer a £120k contract to a guy you’re sending out on loan?

Yea, in terms of profile it’s arguable the worst deal on there, horrific management.

I think the more pertinent question is where did those figures come from, because I doubt he is on anywhere near that.
