I haven't posted here in a while but I figured I would add my two cents. Todd Boehly's consortium is my primary choice because I'm very familiar with the LA Dodgers and how well they are run. One of the best organizations in baseball and American sports in general. They know how to build a team and keep winning. Some of that has to do with their deal with Turner Sports for local coverage, which is a very lucrative deal, but they spend that money very smartly and maintain one of the best farm systems in baseball. They've won over the past decade by building talent and signing major stars, but again, they sign the stars that make their team better. A lot of American sports franchises just sign big stars and wallow in mediocrity because they didn't sign the players they needed (think the Philly 76ers or the NY Jets). Mark Walter, who is the principal owner of the LA Dodgers, is involved with Boehly's consortium so I'm very confident they'll take the lessons learned from baseball and figure out a way to apply them to football (and they will let people who know their stuff run things). I think we'll see more lucrative sponsorship deals because of their expertise in maximizing cash flow.

The consortium appears to know each other very well too, and Hansjorg Wyss has done business with Boehly in the past, being one of the key investors in Eldridge. Boehly has also worked with Goldstein and Clearlake Capital in the past, so the risk of anything going wrong with their group is very minimal. The amount of random names thrown in the Pagliuca or Broughton consortiums has me concerned that investors could pull out down the line, or there will be damage done from internal bickering or what have you. Ultimately, I wouldn't be too worried about any of the three remaining candidates but I would feel a lot more comfortable if Boehly ends up being our owner. A lot more certainty and expertise compared to the other bids.

From what I know, Stephen Pagliuca is a very good owner and the Boston Celtics are somewhat comparable to the LA Dodgers. Josh Harris and Dave Blitzer, who will have a controlling stake in the Broughton bid, have a spotty record at best when it comes to sports teams. The 76ers have underperformed for years, and the New Jersey Devils aren't really perennial contenders in the National Hockey League.

Also, I will echo what was posted earlier in regards to Boehly's meeting with Paul Canoville. He seems very genuine and will honor the legacy of this club and players like Canoville, and will continue our work to fight discrimination and bigotry in all forms.

Christ....this hasn't aged well.

I'm not entirely impressed with how things have gone since I posted this, and the decision to "mutually part ways" with Pochettino is just baffling. Are they so obsessed with building a youth super team that they wouldn't entertain giving Pochettino some experienced players? I have a bad feeling about the next few years but hopefully, I will be proven wrong again.

I still maintain that Roman left this club in a bad state.

Appreciate so much what he did for us. Yes we won the Champions League months earlier but let's not forget how toxic the fanbase was to Lampards sacking.

The new owners coming in getting rid of all the staff, was a mistake, the signings made have been mostly terrible but the squad we had largely wasn't good enough.

If City get sold tomorrow and Pep leaves, they still have a good enough squad and spine to challenge. Same goes for Real Madrid and Arsenal.

I've said this before,  but I just wanted to say it again 🙂

The off-the-books/under-the-counter dealings left us a ticking time bomb anyway.

  • He bought the club from Ken Bates when we had a subordinated loan payment due that was scheduled to sink the club.
  • He made us statistically the most successful football club since the turn of the century.
  • He continually backed every manager that we had, he just demanded continual success and trophies.
  • He put together a redevelopment plan for Stamford Bridge which would have given us a Super Stadium similar to Emirates and WHL. He got planning permission for this to start.
  • He then got exiled form the UK but still continued to support the club from afar.
  • Eventually he was sanctioned and had the club stripped form him. Regardless he still achieved a top end sale of the club and wrote of, in entirety the money owed to him.

Check out Venkys ownership of Blackburn, Ashley at Newcastle, and the Glazers at MU, then let me know how on earth Roman left us in a bad state. In that response please take on board that we are skirting around FFP sanctions, selling off, potentially, our academy players, from a position of a clean slate and a £1bn or more spent by this mob,

I get all of the above. I said I appreciate his work. Without him we wouldn't be where we are. Despite that,  we weren't left in a good stable state. As I said, take out Pep and the Arabs from City right now and squad wise, they are still very strong.

It's the players that matter more than anything and for all our success, we never got a real strangle hold when we were on top. Just like the new owners who messed up the last two windows, Roman kind of messed up the last 2 windows before ( can't fault either for trying). The big money on Werner, Ziyech and Havertz didn't work long term and we're still suffering from Kepa and Lukaku as big money mistakes.

The 4 seasons under Roman leading up to Boehly/Clearlake we finished...

3rd

4th

4th

3rd

And won the Champions League

Then the takeover.the club is now debt free....

The new ownership spend record amounts, then having to find loopholes to comply with spending ,sack managers, sell academy players to avoid sanctions and we finish ....

12th.

Then 6th.

We're in a far worse place than ever.

Think the point I'm trying to make is being missed. Regardless of where we are now. We weren't left in as good a state as we should've been when Roman left. Simply due to poor recruitment.

And to address those finishing positions. Most of them were by the skin of our teeth. With the money we invested pre Todd, we should've had a better and more stable squad that were good enough to stay up to.today.

We all miss Roman because he could throw money at problems we as a club got wrong. Not sustainable and we are now feeling some effects from it.

Sorry, but at the risk of us starting a What have the Romans ever done for us sketch, your comparison to Man City may not turn out to be too well timed.

Without Pep and the Arabs, City are probably still floundering anywhere between the bottom of  the PL to League One with Franny Lee trying to stay at the helm and with Goater and Dickov playing at Haaland and Kingkladze being their midfield maestro. Fast forward 12 months, gift the powers that be a collective pair of bollocks and these 115 charges could come home to roost with the whole thing collapsing around their ears,

Would Pep navigate through club sanctions and still win the CL. Maybe. Would the Arab backing wipe the slate clean for the club if they were run out of town. I don't know to be honest because we don't really know how clubs are truly financially structured until it all goes t*ts up.

Hey, you might be right, its only time and distance that gives us true clarity. I do know that if i had the opportunity to see off these arrogant (we're 20 years behind the US, fckers) know nothing owners and get  Roman back i would possibly give up one of the aforementioned gonads to gift to those powers that be.

Our owners would be delighted if the Academy produced a Messi or Ronaldo.

Just an asset in their eyes to be sold off .

Our previous owner sold off Guehi, Tomori, Solanke, Musiala, Ake, Lamptey, Abraham. That's off the top of my head, people need to stop acting as if the evil American overlords have taken over and sold off our academy, we, as a club, have been doing it way before the current owners came in.

Yes, true, everyone sells players from their academies, nothing unusual there at all.

But....we were never in a position previously where we HAD to sell Academy players purely to avoid breaking financial rules.

NOW despite us being debt free when they bought us, our owners spending spree has led to us having to sell players, hotels ( to ourselves) giving contracts lasting till the 2030s looking for " loopholes" etc etc and plunging is to our worst season in decades.

Completely different.

The money is frozen in an escrow account earning interest while the government (current, such as it is) dithers over the definition of "victims of the war in Ukraine". Roman's definition was fairly loose in that it could be interpreted to include victims on both sides of the conflict. The government (current, such as it is, soon to be flushed down the dunny) defines it as strictly Ukrainian victims. A change of government may resolve the issue.
