To bring some sort of balance we would've had to play Kepa in goal, Bakayako in midfield and Morata leading the line.

Apparently Gabriel Menino was tested positive for the COVID and the players trained with him were all the premier league players.

Impossible to lose Thiago Silva for 2 weeks now, let's hope he will be negative in the tests.

I doubted very much that he would be available for the Newcastle game on Saturday 21st anyway due to his travels and jet lag, we could probably manage without him for the Rennes game on Tuesday 24th but it’s critical that he’s available for the spuds game on Sunday 29th - so if anyone in the squad is going to get it , get it now !!

I feel like this whole season I'm just going to be holding my breath hoping that we don't have a bunch of players that contract the virus at the same time or get exposed at the same time. The club and players seem to be doing the right thing for the most part - minus a few instances - so hopefully exposure can be mitigated as much as possible.

The veteran center-back ably complimented Marquinhos at the heart of Brazil's backline, bringing his expertise and leadership to the fore to snuff out danger. His aerial prowess was on show too, as successfully nodded away one corner kick and free kick each either side of half-time.

Ben and Reece both compliment Tiago of helping them how he non stop directs them of their positioning during the game. What a jewel we have.

I was looking at Maldini's record as another top defender that played on beyond his expected shelf-life.

Maldini played for Italy up to 34 years.

For Milan up to 39 years.

it will be interesting to see how long Silva can stay at the top too and whether at some point he will need to sacrifice the international game,

You hear it from the manager who he says he speaks with everyday. You hear it from the player interviews saying they now fully understand why he’s regarded as a top CB. You can see it in the improvements in Zouma and James defensively.

 It’s not like there was any coaching change. He is basically a player/coach. It sucks that we may only have him for a couple years but the affect he will have on our younger players is unmeasurable. 

Mendy deserves credit too but the amount of shots he faces and quality shots at that are drastically reduced from last year.
 

 

I agree. Even when not on the pitch, you can see the effect he has had already, especially on James and Zouma. 
 

I was always a big fan of James and was confident his defending would improve however I didn’t expect it to develop so quickly. He has the physical attributes and now the guidance and direction from Silva. An incredible signing.

If he learned English well, I hope the board allows him to stay at the club in a coaching capacity. We have benefitted a lot from veteran players being involved in those capacities at the club. 

He's one of the rare ones that can see and read the game yet able to guide others despite speaking very little English.

I'd really love it if he could do that for us but sadly, I think if he's going to do that anywhere it'll be PSG. Understandable really.

You never know. Most players that won titles with us tend to look fondly back in their Chelsea career bar the occasional falling out. 

Hoping Silva wins some trophies with us!

Thiago Silva's impressive start at Chelsea looks set to convince the club to take up the option to extend the Brazilian's stay for a second season.

Negotiations ahead of Silva's arrival over the summer saw Chelsea include the option to extend the central defender's 12-month deal by a further year if he impressed.

 

Official discussions with the player are not expected to being until the new year, but Frank Lampard believes the 36-year old has been a key part of Chelsea's impressive start to the season, and is keen to keep him at Stamford Bridge for a second campaign.

He snuffed out 90% of the danger. Made it look so easy at times.

Silva and Mendy have made such a huge difference - pretty much what Alison and VVD did for the dippers.

Easily my favourite signing of the summer. He’s world class.

Best leader we’ve had since Terry.

He's even better on the ball than David Luiz, some of his passing and moments where he just glided forward just oozed in class. Really kept frustrating their attackers, he made a few slick balls into Kante in the middle that set him going. I just love it when he's in the team, you really see the difference and levels of passing.

This.  And when he was down getting treatment the number of players that came over to him, almost like, you're gonna be ok right?  Such a leader, and just comes across as a man of total class.
