If that is how mentally fragile he is - he should never play for us again. Fortunately I don’t think he thought that at all. If anything, it should get his tail up knowing if he scores that we’re back in the game. No elite sportsman has the mentality you’re referring to, giving up at half time.

The fact that everyone knew that we have no chance is something real that happens to every player on some level, in their minds they know what is happening as well. Clearly they all kept playing it's not like they gave up but what I'm saying is that the way the game was going it affected the mentality of the players and clearly that influenced his penalty taking this time.

We were always against the wind, I never said that he gave up I said that penalties are a mental game and Allisson was confident while Jorginho was lacking his usual confidence. Even if he scored it we still lose the game, Liverpool scored in 4 min after the second half started, they just didn't want to try that hard since they knew 3 points were secured already.

Thanks for putting this and taking all the flak! Spot on comment

Surprisingly I never got any abuse for this which isn’t usually the case with any criticism of James. I thought he done OK but I don’t think you can say good when he’s posted missing for the opening goal.

75 actually. But no shock, he's literally the best midfielder in the world.

Apparently he was offered to us but we declined. That was one stupid decision if we intended to compete for the title this season. With him we actually could have.

Agreed. He would have been an upgrade on Jorginho, and we could probably still have got a decent price selling Jorginho back to an Italian club.

We setup like i thought we would, but the quality on the ball in the middle of pitch wasnt good enough.

Just started to improve the red card happens, and its a massive uphill battle from there.

Important to keep perspective, we only had 1 preseason game, compared to liverpool who had 4. We were missing 5 of our best 11, and no doubt we will be a different team in the return fixture.

5 starters out. Including our new goalie, I was hoping for a draw here. ...and I thought Frank's tactics were ok.  It wasn't that long ago that we played open against Liverpool and they carved us for 5 goals in clinical fashion.....with the squad we had today man for man  they have more talent then us by a wide margin.

It's not an excuse, it's just the truth. Game was lost after the red card, on some level every player knew it. Everyone was poor today, Jorginho had a much better last game but it still doesn't make it any different that we lost the game by Christensen's blunder, which isn't the first time that he has ruined us either...

Sorry, but that's bollocks. Even at 11v11, approaching half-time, I wasn't that confident and thought Liverpool would win but you NEVER give up. Sure going down to 10 men made it the proverbial mountain to climb, but you still have to be mentally strong and believe you can get something out of the game. The game WASN'T over, just as the Barca semi-final wasn't over when we were 2-0 down to the best team in Europe with JT sent off.

Lamps just said, Kepa doesn't f**k up and Jorginho takes a better penalty and we get a draw today and he's spot on.

The goal we conceded was very similar to the arsenal one in the FA cup.. too high a line and cbs too wide apart.. AC wasn’t aware of the surrounding and let the striker get a run on him.. it was curtains from then on.. just poor concentration fron AC.

Liverpool scored in 4 min when we started the second half, they took the advantage fully and had the 3 points secured, to think that we had a chance in this game is just ridiculous, Liverpool just didn't care to score more goals...

so what does Mount do? genuine question here

I really like Mount...he seems like a great kid, has great energy, and always put in a good shift for the team.....BUT

Mount is not an attacking winger

Mount is not a creative midfield attacking genius

I understand Lamp has a love affair with Mount, but if you need to play Mount....keep him in CM/CDM mid. Sacrifice one of Kovacic, Jorgingo, or Kante if you have to play Mount.

The sooner that Lampard drops Mount from winger and CAM, the better this team will play.

I actually thought we were ok in the first half. But when your down to ten men against the champions for 45 mins is going to be very hard.

christian, Silva, Ziyech, Chilwell can’t come soon enough.

its still early days and I think we will improve

That is total bullsh*t. Liverpool took their foot off the gas because they knew it was game over

To be fair Frank you picked that plonker in goal knowing he makes a howler basically every game and you picked that one dimensional midfielder and put him on pens.

Poor decisions in retrospect sure but still your pics.

I think everyone knew it deep down on some level, we couldn't defend 5 minutes after the red card it was that easy for Liverpool!

Lamp hasn’t used the CAM position for half a season..which is his actual position.. he has either played wide or in the number 6 position..

I don't know how people are defending Kepa.  He made the saves today any keeper should be expected to make.  That is not success.  He has also cost us a goal and any slim chance of anything from the game (I doubt it would have changed things).  He has to go.  His attitude and ability are both lacking.  I simply can not stand him.  Why do we keep playing him - what happened over the summer whereby he has now displaced WC.  Two games, two mistakes.  At this level (and many levels down) that is simply not good enough.

The rest of them - christ we're in this deeper than I thought.  I actually feel for Timo and Kai.  They must be wondering what they have walked into.  From the two games I have seen we have regressed in our passing ability and pattern of plays.  Or at best, standing still which is going backwards in the Premier League.

The buck stops with Frank for me.  He is making weak decisions every game.  Brighton - players out of position.  Today - effectively set the team up not to lose (credit to Klopp who only ever came for the win).  What's frustrating though is in setting the team up not to lose he picks 5 across the backline that have awful team cohesion and defensive awaress.  James and Zouma are the only two I'd keep, plus Tomori.  How can Liverpool sign a guy Friday and he's already pulling the strings Sunday.  It takes us weeks to even contemplate someone "being ready" as they haven't had a "pre-season".  Frank - wake the F up - no one has.

After Frank, well looking at the field is concerning.  There is such little spirit, leadership and character in 80% of those players.  If Timo doesn't dribble from inside his own half all the way, well, no one is providing service.

What on earth are we doing.

Nothing changed tactically since last season still clue less, you can't tell me Leeds have better players than us, they have Liverpool a tougher match at Anfield. Tactically inept.

I've said it last year and I will say it again, it's not the players....its the management. Did 80% of EPL teams have better defenders than Chelsea? Yet Chelsea defense plays like it's in the bottom 20%.

I am afraid Silva and Chillwell are not going to solve the defensive issues that Chelsea has last season. I love to be proved wrong here.

Before the match I wasn’t confident but thought we had a chance of getting a result despite the players missing.

0-0 at half time and who knows.

Christianson’s challenge made it impossible to win and very unlikely to hold out for a draw.

An absolute terrible challenge for a defender, literally rugby tackled him.

Lost the game in that moment.

This excuse about players being out don't wash with me, are you telling me Leeds team last week is better that the team we put our or is it the manager that's better? Which one is it?

We were totally out classed today and deserved nothing from the game but we've all seen games like that before where a team is outclassed and battered but still nicks a point and even all 3. Even great teams panic when they concede and 2-1 with 10+ minutes to go, we could have nicked a result, but Jorginho's "mentally weak" penalty put paid to that.

If this is true then it is an absolute shocker by Lampard and Morris who are coveting Declan Rice providing we can top dollar for the sh!te that can't even get into this side

Gawd ppl criticising lamps for setting the team to defend first and use counter attacks have probably not been long here enough to remember the mourinho era against big sides.. we were very solid but AC lost his concentration close to half time.. very frustrating sh*tty luck but happens.

Liverpool looked comfortable whole game, there is no way that they don't walk out with 3 points even if Jorginho scores the penalty. You're just zoning out Jorginho when it's very clear that Christensen lost us any chance of getting something from the game.
