Romelu Lukaku back to Chelsea - and gone again!

I’m a bit worried about this signing I have to admit, I’m just not sure Lukaku is the answer, but it’s not going to change anything now so I’ll back him as long as he wears the shirt.

As for people saying it wasn’t a panic buy, I don’t think it was a panic but he was most certainly second choice behind Haaland and that’s been stated by multiple Chelsea “ITK” sources, we don’t have a great record when it comes to signing our backup options.

I hope I’m wrong, I had massive hopes for him when he was with us before - then again, anything is better than having to watch us play this false 9 with Havertz as a striker, which I’m really not a fan of.

I agree, not sure hes the right player for us, but at least he will play as an out and out striker (I hope) so we will have a point to play around in attack. Tuchel refuses to use Abraham for whatever reason and we just have no direction in attack the majority of the time. I still think Havertz as a false 9 is a total waste of his talent, even though he does quite well there sometimes. Time will tell if Lukaku is the right striker for us, but we do desperately need a striker.

I don't understand the concern here, he is the type of striker who fulfils our needs and I also think he was one of a few main targets rather than a back up.

Having an established powerful striker upfront will make the world of difference to our attack, with the last time we had that was with Costa.

Those stats really don't tell much. For example, is the difference in the number of receptions in the penalty area at Everton and at Inter due to the fact that Everton are a mid table team and get less to the opponent's box than the present Champions of the Calcio? Basically, are these changes due to the differences in the Leagues, that he was playing for better or worse teams, or are they real improvements?

The Lukaku at Utd never used his physicality properly. The Lukaku at Inter bossed the defence but ultimately it was the Serie A where Ibrahimovic is still a top scorer.

I think it's ok to downplay expectations this early on after our string of expensive striker not living up to expectations. I sincerely hope Lukaku has finally matured into a striker that can use everything he has

When are they going to announce this guy?  Seems like the agreement was almost a week ago.

I think he should be in London today...

I think this does tell a compelling story, especially because there is a clear progression visible in some metrics through from Everton to Man U to Inter. MU probably retains possession even better than Inter.

The fact that he is "carrying and dribbling" and "receiving the ball in the penalty area" much more than average suggests both an increase in confidence as well as better positioning/understanding with team mates.

The jump in link up passing may just be due to better chemistry with team mates but it does suggest that he is far more invitation lived in build up than he used to be.

Some interesting patterns here that cannot be attributed to chance.

Maybe they are waiting on another purchase to reveal two together, they have done it before.................

I assume they also want the storm of Messi to go down a bit. To have a bit more cloud on this very expensive transfer.
But please don’t stall it too long. I have a Fantasy League to update. 😁

Because a lot of people here think that Lukaku is not good enough.

Would make sense if we didn't have a match coming up against Crystal Palace on Saturday that I assume they might want to play Lukaku in.   I mean you have to announce the signing before you can put the guy on your roster right?

One person maybe two have said that, that's not a lot.

A fair few are sceptical because our record with strikers is abysmal, even when we spend top dollar on players ripping up other leagues. So it's hardly surprising not everyone is 100% confident this will work.

Our record with physical striker is wonderful though

Jimmy, drogba, costa and Giroud.

We could say the same thing for Haaland, arguably the defences he's up against are not as good as Serie A.

At least Rom is Premier League proven unlike Morata, Batshuayi, Abraham, Werner (who will come good) etc.

I was hoping we would get this announced in time for Rom to play against Palace but it's not looking like that's gonna happen

Yeah I'm writing him off at the very least as a starter against Palace.

Even if announced today (which isn't looking like it's going to happen because by my calculations it's 18:30 UK time) that would mean he would have only 1 day to train with the team before suiting up against Palace.

OFFICIAL. Confirmed. Romelu Lukaku joins Chelsea on a permanent deal from Inter for €115m fee. He’ll receive €12m net/season plus add ons as salary. Blue circleHandshake #CFC

Probably a Chelsea TV announcement at 7. They probably saved it hoping it would save face after the rail seating issues.
