Might just have something to do with who was presenting tonight's game and who he supports.

Interesting to note how refs' dislike of and very harsh treatment of Chelsea players extends to when they are international duty. Ampadu was sent off for exactly this yesterday:

England are qualified for the last 16 due to the last round of results, I'd say that this is a good opportunity to try something different with the dead rubber but I know Southgate has nothing up his sleeve and it won't make a difference anyway.

IMO it is irrelevant to try something new. England has conceded 0 goals and  that is the most important thing. Don't concede and try to nick goal and be lucky.

Absolute masterclass from Southgate - finding a benign excuse to drop his best player so we don't finish top of the group and therefore likely get Sweden/Slovakia/Poland in the next round rather than Germany/Portugal.

I actually think that Mount may have been rested tonight irrespective of the self isolation. This game had 'dead rubber' about it after the weekend results and it is a good chance to give Henderson, McGuire and Grealish a start with little jeopardy other than hand picking the route we would prefer to take.

So far it's been a great tournament for our players, riding the crest of the wave from 2905, Kante our best player the integral part in the French team playing some of his best football atm. Jorginho and Emerson strutting for the Italians, Gilmore lifting a whole nation single handed. Christensen resembling a WC Brazilian defender, Havertz looking like a potential golden boot contender in a very good German team.

Still time for others to make a mark, Werner, Mount, James, Chilwell.

Ethan has had a bit of a nightmare, but still he's young. And Rudiger should be careful, he could of easily been red carded the other night.

We just need Luis Enrique to put Marcos Llorente where he belongs in the midfield and play our captain Azpi on the right side of the Spanish defence.

Saka is a talent, no question but he hasn't a patch of Sancho right now.

The only reason i can think of for him not to play is that he asked Southgate not to play because he knows he's going to United and doesnt want to get injured.

Kane looks very, very off the pace. 

So far looks more of the same to me, another goal papering over Sterling's flaws and Kane looks like he's dragging a boulder around behind him. Not entirely convincing but at least we've got ahead.

Scotland drawing but I think they are missing Gilmour to control a bit the midfield, which has so far being dominated by Modric who has been left free to play most of the first half.

Mount is being saved for the next game it seems.

The German commentator thinks the first half was our best half of football in the Euros so far. I suppose that’s technically true.

It's criminal how many minutes Kane is getting with this level of fitness, now Henderson is coming on for a 45 minute warm up, I bet Southgate is dying to use him for the knockouts
